Good morning! Can you believe January’s winding down already?

Today’s quote is from a philosopher: “Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.”

    Another lurker emerges.

In a conversation with a couple from a church we began attending this past fall the ministry “Way of the Master” became a topic. For some reason my reaction was cautionary, but it was intuitive, not rational.

Can anyone shed some light on this group/teaching? Thanks,
    Deanna

Oh this ought to be a good one, right Lynn? What a dumb quote by an obviously drunk philosopher.
EVERY living thing is born within reason. NOTHING dies by chance. God allows it……that’s the reason. :)
Now, anybody taking bets that Erasmus, or RDEAN will post something stupid about what I said?

And speaking of drunk philosophers …

I read the statement three times trying to figure out the typo:
The first use of nuclear weapons must remain in the quiver of escalation as the ultimate instrument to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction.

Then it hit me, the West has now out-Orwellled Orwell: The West must nuke other countries in order to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction! In Westernspeak, the West nuking other countries does not qualify as the use of weapons of mass destruction.

The astounding statement comes from a paper prepared for a NATO summit in April by five top military leaders – an American, a German, a Dutchman, a Frenchman, and a Brit.

The paper, prepared by men regarded as distinguished leaders and not as escapees from insane asylums, argues that “the West’s values and way of life are under threat, but the West is struggling to summon the will to defend them.” The leaders find that the UN is in the way of the West’s will, as is the European Union which is obstructing NATO and “NATO’s credibility is at stake in Afghanistan.”

And that’s a serious matter. If NATO loses its credibility in Afghanistan, Western civilization will collapse just like the Soviet Union. The West just doesn’t realize how weak it is. To strengthen itself, it needs to drop more and larger bombs.

Jean-Paul Sartre: Nausea. Yeah, the book is really called that.

  6. About the quote:
    What a bleak outlook!

I studied a little Sartre in college. Was glad to get past him, actually.

Lynn, When I visit this site from my home PC, I get a “404 File not found” error message at the front page although I am able to view all the tabs and such.
Would it be possible for you to post the address of Web Diva that manages these sorts of things so that I can tell her about this issue?

    Thanks.

  8. Uh-oh. It’s the white Dems vs. the black Dems. Not sure where that whole “judging people by the content of their character” thing fits in.

Night Train, I have a hard time looking at Obama’s life trajectory so far and seeing him as being truly representative of the American “black experience” however one defines that. The fact that he doesnt carry any grievance baggage of the avg race hustler/povertician?? I find that to be a major selling point for his candidacy though I couldnt vote for so consistently a proAbort politician of either party.

I dont know about you all but if you go to the Fred Thompson website you can buy lotsa stuff dirt cheap! No telling how much it will sell for on eBay in a few years.

    Akmom,

Welcome to the fray. I don’t think I have heard of that but would be interested to hear if anybody else has.

Note on the Christian college gangsta thread, I polled my older kids on it. The two Christian College graduates said it was very funny but highly illegal in their school. And of the secular college attendees, one did not get it and the other did not answer. Just one family’s opinion.

I heard STARBUCKS will begin selling a cuppa joe for a buck. Only not where you live. Not where I live either. This battle is in Seattle
Seems Dunkin Donuts and the Golden Arches are both launching their own line of cheaper specialty coffee drinks.
So far I gather Krispy Kreme is setting this one out.

We have a first-time winner: Chuck in Jersey! (Welcome, Chuck!) Sartre was the originator of that sad, false sentiment. Please enjoy your digital cappucino…

I just Googled “Way of the Master.”

  14. I HATE the new Dunkin Donuts commercial. That catchy little jingle…I start humming it and can’t get it out of my head ;)

  15. Al Gore says the ice caps will disappear in the next five years. Oh no! Stop the world, I want to get off!

    Argh. More global warming pap.

  16. Wish me luck. I am off to a semi interview.

#7: “D-Punjab”! Hilarious! Unfortunately, it would be at least as accurate to call her “D-Beijing.”

Reminds me of a writer who referred to Robert Byrd as “D-KKK.”

    Akmom,

Way of the Master is a collaboration of Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron. It is mostly about evangelizing particularly using the ten commandments. Ray Comfort can be a little less than diplomatic with people that disagree with him. And the use of guilt to get Christians to evagelize and to get the evagelee (is that a word?) to listen can be a little much.

Bad news, can’t wait for a rant tomorrow.

Congress and the president have agreed to do something about the economy.

Let us know about the interview Kim.

  21. Kim- Are you interviewing a semi, being interviewed by one or going to a “kind-of” interview? How did it go?

  22. 22. Gravatar by StuBob 01.24.08 at 2:27 pm

She works at a car dealership. Perhaps she’s moving to the tractor-trailer division ;-)

  23. Hey- I just noticed the “Hot list” off to the right. Cool!

  24. No, I am not dyslexic. It’s on the left!

Well, we had a heat wave here in Cleveland this morning. The Temperature got almost up to 21 degrees. My colleagues in Mequon Wisconsin said the temperature was -10 degrees. So much for Global Warming.

  26. The salary I asked for is not a problem. Plus commission. I am going to the plant Tuesday. They are still 30 days out on needing me.

  27. Where is this global warming when we need it? It was 15 below this morning here in lovely Wisconsin! Our trip to Nashville wasn’t much warmer. Oh, well.

  29. Sorry, TL, this was indeed a bad week to come to Nashville–lows in the teens, highs of 30 a couple days (including today).

Work has been slow so far this month, mostly waiting to hear news on the book I’m writing. But I’m now editing a new book, and I’m enjoying it–it’s fiction and I want to know what happens next, which is a pretty good sign. But mostly I want to hear “what happens next” in my own life–will I get to write the book, or won’t I?

All “contributions” would be greatly appreciated.

Akmom, Way of the Master question,

I took Bob Buckles thought and checked with google. No personal experience with them at all. What I read on the site (did not listen to anything) it sounds like a perfectly respectable effort to get the Word out. Some will take it and say it is the only way, they will be wrong. Some will say it is way off base and should be ignored, they will be wrong. It is a tool and can be used to help people draw closer to their Maker but certainly can be abused and give people something to hang their faith on rather than the cross. Looks fine to me.

  34. It was -33 where I live this morning. Not too many miles away it was -39, officially. Since I was at TL’s this morning, I was at only -15 there. Nashville was not warm, but definately warmer than the the below zeros back home. Besides, Cheryl, we had a ball visiting with the grandkids. Tomorrow we will be up into the 20’s. Yippee! One of the local radio personalities is always inviting Al Gore to come up here to find the global warming. This is the most normal winter we have had in a long time. It is nice to be home, but we sure enjoyed our trip. I hope Janie is enjoying hers.

    Akmom, Way of the Master,

I most enjoyed the ten principles for a new Christian and the songs for the lukewarm church, both found under the tools category.

It is 52 in the house, 15 outside. With a low this morning of 0.

  37. 37. Gravatar by akmom 01.24.08 at 4:47 pm

    Mumsee,

52 in the house! Why? Mercy me.

We’re grateful to be back in the single digits after the sloppy 40’s of a few days ago; but it’s toasty warm (set at 68) in the house.

re: Way of the Master. I spent some time following several googled threads the other day. Was looking here for more personal insight (if it’s to be found) from the thoughtful, wonderful folks here. Thanks for your input, Adios and Mumsee.

    #7 Nighty,

No it is the White Female Dems against the Black Male Dems. Proof positive that only the lefty socialists, regardless of color or gender, discriminates against anything today. The rest of us gave it up long ago.

    #10 Sawgunner,

Starbucks has been selling coffee for less than a buck in many 3rd world countries for m any years - including China.

  42. 42. Gravatar by llama 01.24.08 at 7:26 pm

    #19 Chas,

I’m with you. Once again, I fund and get nothing back in return. But, they hate me anyway and think it ok to steal from me and that I am evil. I will have to fire another dozen lefties to pay for this. That should dent their enthusiasm for stealing from the rich :-)

  43. 43. Gravatar by NJLawyer 01.24.08 at 7:27 pm

    I also get error 404.

  44. 44. Gravatar by llama 01.24.08 at 7:30 pm

Yep, Global warming has always lead to the next ice age over the last several million years or so - if you believe the scientists who says we are to blame for global warming. What nitwits.

Must be nice to claim to be completely correct when on both sides of two different issues. They must think we are as nuts as they are :-)

  45. I prefer Camus to Sartre. Camus reduced philosophy to a simple question of suicide. Nothing like stripping away all the rhetoric to get at the Heart of the Matter (Greene - a great Catholic novelist)

Starbucks is too bitter — the muddy slop at Tim Horton’s is my preference at $1:15

  46. 46. Gravatar by SteveG 01.24.08 at 10:04 pm

Starbucks’ coffee is actually pretty cheap. If you just want coffee you can get the largest size they sell for under $2. It’s the specialty drinks with all the added syrups and steaming and such that they charge the bank for.

  47. HRW, I am not familiar with Camus. In line with your comment, though, I have heard it said that the only consistent existentialists are the ones who commit suicide.

  48. BTW, re: $1.15. Is that in Canadian money? What would that be in American dollars?

As a trucker stops for a red light, a blonde catches up. She jumps out of her car, runs up to his truck, and knocks on the door.

The trucker lowers the window, and she says ‘Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load.’

The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street.

When the truck stops for another red light, the girl catches up again. She jumps out of her car, runs up and knocks on the door.

Again, the trucker lowers the window. As if they’ve never spoken, the blonde says brightly, ‘Hi my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!’

Shaking his head, the trucker ignores her again and continues down the street.

At the third red light, the same thing happens again.

All out of breath, the blonde gets out of her car, runs up, knocks on the truck door. The trucker rolls down the window. Again she says ‘Hi, my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!’

When the light turns green the trucker revs up and races to the next light.

When he stops this time, he hurriedly gets out of the truck, and runs back to the blonde.

He knocks on her window, and after she lowers it, he says…

‘Hi, my name is Kevin, it’s winter in Maine, and I’m driving the SALT TRUCK!’

  50. Thanks for the laugh J! I’ve seen this joke before, but it’s one of my favorite blonde jokes!!
