Chas,

I said realist, not realistic. And if only faith, hope, and love abide, where does that leave truth? Is Paul admitting that truth is ours for the making, backing up earlier biblical claims in the constitutive power of language?

P.S.- When was the translation changed from charity to love? Wasn't it "the greatest of these is charity"? Will I be mocked for asking if that change has socio-economic implications?

The greatest of these is "love" and this is the greatest because it is God's love for us (mankind) that prompted Him to provide the greatest sacrifice for us in Christ . Can we say that our faith and hope allows us to harvest this greatest love.

Luke,
See Karen's post above. He doesn't let us down. Lynn could have gone on down to Hebrews 11:6, "But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those that seek him".
You talk about a "realistic world view". But what is real, and what will abide. Multiple generations, some regular folks, some brilliant, have believed Paul when he says three things abide.
I Cor. 13:13 "And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
Nobody has topped that.

I am grateful for the tough times of my life, when God taught me that He truly is in control, & does love me & take care of me.

My mother once said that she & my SIL worried about how much I trust God. So I asked Mom, "Has my trust in Him ever let me down?" (Or words to that effect.)

Mom thought for a moment, then slowly smiled & said, "No."

This is an interesting passage for we. It seems like there is so much in the Bible that can be read to destabalize the "realist" word view. Here the bible invocates the creation power of speech. Here is discourse really made material more effectively and more blatantly than has been attempted by an army of liberal post-structuralists. Yet there is some much resistance to the truth that morality is created by the institutionalization of the way we talk to each other about ethics. Go figure.

When I was a wee believer, I was sorely lacking in faith. The Lord pointed that out to me as He watched me struggling with what He said and what the world (school and family) said. He prompted me to ask for faith until I finally folded and let Him in on my little secret (I doubted Him). Over the years I have seen that faith grow until now I have that constant assurance that He is Who He claims and things are as He claims. I strongly encourage all who want to know the Lord to ask for faith. He Who loves us more than any other and desires to give to us will give beyond what you can imagine.

Faith is one of those top three mentioned in Corinthians 13, love, hope, and faith. It brings with it things like peace and joy and love. Well worth the asking.
