Psychologist Wray Herbert retells a story from a Woody Allen film, and all of us can relate.
In the classic film “Play It Again, Sam,” Woody Allen is the nervous and insecure Allan Felix, who has recently been dumped by his wife. When his best friends set him up with a blind date, the character blunders his way through the evening with one gaffe after another, ending with an appalling display of table manners at a Chinese restaurant. When his visibly dismayed date excuses herself to go to the restroom, Allen turns to his friends: “She likes me,” he says confidently. “I can read women.”
The dramatic irony, of course, is that he can’t. We are privileged in the film to read his behavior and judge him unable to read women, at least in that situation. The other ironic thing is that this happens to all of us all the time. We judge ourselves incorrectly all the time. Herbert things he knows why.

Don’t blame racism
The old Woody films were quite funny; though some folks have in recent years noted he had no blacks in the cast and his character was invariably involved with a gal much younger than he is/was.
Disturbing esp when you think of how he married the daughter he and his exwife adopted!
Woody is just this side of Roman Polanski if you ax me.

Usually rich New York Jews usually do not hang out with black people or associate with them unless they servants or paid help in their businesses.
Woody told funny stories based on his life and experiences - what he knew best. My guess is, and it is only a guess, that he wouldn’t have any funny experiences to draw on about black people but he has plenty to convey concerning young women.
The white left just loves this guy for some reason though. I think they see him as a talented intellectual non religious secular like themselves, and overlook his pedophilia / womanizing and his discrimination toward blacks - just like they do their own.

I know that this post is not about Woody Allen, but I have to correct Sawgunner here. First of all, I think you are talking about Mia Farrow here, and she and Woody never married. So technically she is not his ex-wife. Second, Woody and Mia adopted two children, but Soon-Yi was not one of them. She was adopted by Mia and a former husband.
I’m not condoning Woody’s actions, but I do think it’s unfair to make him look worse than he is.

I am white (though not part of the “left”) and I guess you can say that I “love” Woody Allen. I love his work, and it’s not just “for some reason”. It’s because he is an incredibly talented screen writer and director. I call that a good reason.

Let me get this straight - he’s discriminatory towards blacks because he doesn’t have any in his films. That makes a lot of sense. I guess every film maker should write a black person into their script less they be judged as discriminatory or racist.

That’s absurd, I agree, but I was quite shocked to learn that this is the mentality of the left. I had it drummed into me, firsthand, from an ultra left-wing professor in a “multicultural” class I had to take for my teaching credential. It’s not clear from his posts, but I suspect that Llama doesn’t believe this himself, but that he’s referring to the people who do and whose adoration for Woody Allen contradicts their stated belief.
I never enjoyed Woody Allen. His humor is weird and he’s pathetic. He hasn’t moved from his spot for over 20 years.
As usual, MakeItMan has hit the nail on the head. Woody Allen is not only weird and pathetic, he gives me the heebie-geebies.

Ive been to Long Island (homeland of my wife and Inlaws). My wife attended Hofstra and had friends in her fellowship from every ethno subgroup you’d care to mention. I dont think you could live in modern day NYC or for that matter Atlanta and have no black acquaintances or coworkers. Maybe Woody Allen really grew up in Mayberry?

The left is just full to the brim of bigoted haters of all kinds.
When Hillary was running for the Senate she upset the Jews in New York with her anti Semitic remarks. Today she begged ‘hard working Americans, hard working white Americans’ to vote for her. If any conservative or Republican said those things the left would be calling for them to be thrown out of the country after they were lynched.
95% of democrat Blacks are voting for Obama. I guess that means nothing to the racist on the left either. Poor Hillary, even with her balck husband PResident in tow, can’t even get 6% of the black women to vote for her? You have the religious leaders of the Black left Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan being overtly anti semitic calling them ‘Jew Boys from Hymie town’ among a few other chosen words not meant for the chosen people.
The democrat Jews have a whole Yiddish vocabulary still in use where their real feelings for blacks come across. Half my family is Jewish democrat and I can tell you I don’t need tokens to know how racist they are - I hear it every day. Blacks and Jews just hate each other plain and simple and they are both 90% racist, bigoted and socialist democrat through and through.
I don’t want to get into how the blacks and Hispanics hate each other on the left since this is not about that entire set of racial hatreds where even their gangs kill each other where ever and when ever possible.
Nor will we talk about what the white socialist did to the black race, after the civil war up until Republicans took over congress in 1994, by nearly destroying it totally along with their livelihoods and neighborhoods, with socialistic and insane welfare, whack job character destruction, misplaced and insane compassion that only kept blacks slightly better than animal but still in the democrat pocket like they were when they were Democrat slaves.
Lester my man, I wouldn’t be counting on Hillary being Obama’s vice president. After her husband was the first black president and all, I can’t see him wanting to be the first black second lady too with Michelle being the first black first lady - a position Wee Willy coveted above all others. Plus it is no secret that Obama doesn’t like white people any more than his preacher and spiritual mentor does and no problem playing the race card on Wee Willy.
The entire left is nothing more than the most racist and bigoted group that still discriminates against anyone today in America. All the sane people gave it up long ago and cured themselves. The left claimed they were never sick to begin with so they they remain what they always were - the worst of the lot.

Llama, you are right - the white Democrats (national) are largely racists and bigots - they despise the Blacks as their kept servants (look what happens when a Black wanders off the left-wing Plantation), they detest the working class Whites who pay their taxes and keep the country moving, they play race against race, sex against sex, age against age, class against class, every election, every speech, every chance they get.
They see Obama only as a useful amd malleable tool for their Greater Socialist Plantation goals and Obama in turn sees them as useful idiots for his own personal power trip, so that he can sell the country and the people and the Republic he so despises and belittles down the proverbial river, to enemies both internal and external.
But, locally, not all Democrats are bad. My neighbor is a Democrat. His wife makes some really good pickle relish. And he is okay on some things, practical things, useful things, like growing watermelons or fixing tractors.
He is just an idiot, politically speaking. Practically admits it, too - his brain is withered in all the important places due to watching too much Oprah, I think. So he still supports Obama, although he cannot make a single clear independently thought-out statement as to why.
Instead he just regurgitates the garbage he gets from the television, like a mantra. But his eyes are sort of glazed and he acts drugged when he is doing it. So I am thinking he could be successfully de-programmed.
Any hints on how to deprogram a wobbly Leftist would be MUCH appreciated, Llama.
Referring to the main theme, it’s pretty human to view ourselves as the star of our own movie. However, probably our best times are when we are not aware of ourselves at all i.e. when our focus is on another, not on self.

Having actually grown up in Mayberry (Mount Airy, NC, just up the road from Pilot Mountain), I demand you take that back!!
Somehow I doubt the small-town Appalachia life would have suited him…
