TGIF!

Today’s quote is from a scientist: “A problem well-stated is a problem half-solved.”

  1. Don’t know who said it, but I agree with it.
    TGIF and Good morning, all!

It’s Final Friday (cue up the old George Jones song!)

Where is Lynn? I miss her.

  5. Me, too.
    How is her recovery going?

Joe B: Enjoy your virtual coffee of the day!

Regarding Lynn: She is slowly easing back into work. Since she has to choose carefully how to spend the little energy she has, she’s been focusing on her work for the magazine. She should be back here soon, though.

I don’t agree with the quote.

I can state a problem very well and it does not mean that I am half way to a solution.

    For instance, if I state

“Aliens from a globular cluster outside our galaxy have attacked Earth, destroyed all resistance, seized all strategic points, and are currently rounding up people, in order to use them as lubrication in the star drives of their spaceships”; how does this concise and well-stated summary of the particular problem lead to the problem at hand being already ‘half-solved’?

You always need SOMETHING other than just the statement of the problem to claim substantial progress toward a solution.

So, for my example above, if I added the useful phrase “and I have found out that the aliens are extremely allergic to HAMSTERS”, then YES, one could then be confident that some progress has been made toward a possible solution of the problem.

  8. Joe B.,
You may have missed the thread several days ago–she contracted mono and is pretty fatigued. I’d link you to the thread, but it “unraveled” pretty quickly! :)

I missed the note about Lynn, too. I’ll keep praying for her continued recovery.

    Joe B,

If you look in the WMB editor choice on the right side, click on Personal Note: What I have learned from the kissing disease, you can read her post.

    Drill,

    Your acumen in beyond paralell!

I got an e-mail from her today. I think we should all pray for her and her family. She feels weak at times.

I had mono when I was in middle school. I was out of school for 8 weeks.

  13. Drill,

Look at it the other way around. If one doesn’t have an accurate understanding of the problem, then one will never solve it. If the earthlings in your scenario thought that undersea creatures were dragging folks into the Mariana trench, then they would not even try to stop the extra-galactic invaders.

Knowing what one must solve does get one closer to the solution than trying to solve something else.

  14. I’m not sure I understand all of the political and diplomatic undertones to this piece, but on its surface it is alarming.

It seems that the OPEC nations are among the stingiest contributors to the World Food Bank at a time when the need is greatest and the revenues from rising oil prices are obscenely high.

This has given me one more reason to be upset with the rise in oil prices. When so much of the profits are being used to line the pockets of the rich it leaves me fuming.

Metanoia, it tells me a lot about Islam.
