Enlightenment finally comes to Washington, D.C.

Artist Gerry Hofstetter is letting his light shine in Washington, D.C. Which is to say, he’s using giant, 6,000-watt projectors to illuminate the National Cathedral with all kinds of cool images. It’s called “Lighting to Unite.” I am not sure how it’s uniting people, unless he means in the physical sense of drawing a large crowd - which is a perfectly fine way, I suppose, of doing it.

Soul searching
If only it were true…
Those were pretty cool images except for that big naked guy.
And doesn’t he know that all that power usage is killing the polar bears or something?
I’d hate to be the nucklehead who picks up the tab for the Cathedral’s light bill.
Oh wait, I am!
Xion: Officially, it is okay if you kill polar bears as long as you pickle them (along with a crucifix) in a vat of urine. Then that is Art, and everything is cool. And then we (the taxpayers) get to pay for it, too.
Sometimes you just gotta suffer for Art.
These days everybody gets to suffer for Art.
On your links and on a news piece I saw elsewhere, I noticed that a number of the images showed Jews, Moslems, Hindus and others. I have no problem with this for a multi-cultural presentation, but the fact is the National Cathedral is a Christian Church. How about a presentation of the Gospel projected on its walls? Or a history of Jesus in art? Can you imagine a synagogue or mosque portraying icons or images of Billy Graham or the pope on its walls? I highly doubt it.
This project seems more a marginally clever use of technology, lots of electricity/resources and some marketing acumen than art.
Anyone that ever set up an antique device known as a slide projector out of proper sequence with the equally ancient, and usually accompanying, screen has generated such images on whatever happens to catch the light from the projector. At that time, were someone to have considered the result of this operator error as “art” there would have been several rounds of raucous laughter preceding the slide presentation.
Kathy has a good point that subject matter projected on buildings such as the cathedral could/should require careful selection lest the sensibilities of some minority in the midst of the viewing masses be offended. I’m quite sure there would be any number of lawyers willing to take a suit which her examples might generate.
In the age of global warming hype, I hope he used fluorescent bulbs!

No, you’re not. The National Cathedral is an Episcopal Church and on their dime.
You are, however, the nucklehead (sic) who thinks that because it has “National” in its name it must taxpayer-funded.
It’s a church … it’s not a government building. Sheesh.
