Rants! & Raves! 11.2
Here it is again, Rants!& Raves!, your chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:
1) A Rant! is something you’re not happy about and is signified by the word “Rant!” or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.
2) A Rave! is something you are happy about and is signified by the word “Rave!” or an appropriately peppy emoticon.
3) All Rants! and Raves! must concern something that has happened within the past week.
4) You may gripe about a person’s speech, writings, or actions in the past week, but you may not use a Rant! to express general unhappiness with a person.
Have fun!

Rant: My thoughtful and somewhat lengthy comment on the Scraped-thin thread wouldn’t post and (because of the lack of a preview function) was lost.
Rave: Comments are working again! And having to write my comment over again gave me a chance to write it differently and I hope better the second time.
Rant:
What Pauline said. Same thread, same problem. Grrr!
Rave:
I’m alive to complain!
Rave: The Red Sox won the World Series
Rave: Our ability to join the fray is restored!
Rave: Two gorgeous (even if a bit chilly) days in a row.
Rave: Today is a day off from my part-time job!
Rave- Parent-Teacher conferences went well today. So far I haven’t had any parents blaming me for their children failing.
Rant- (9:00AM) Why can’t we comment??????
Rave: Hurray for Dr. NO!!!!!!!
Rant: That Anlir didn’t tell us–who have been praying for him–why he can’t talk.
Rave: That one of Anlir’s doctors was able to figure something out.
Rant: A bug bite that’s only gotten huger, itchier, blotchier on the soft flesh of my inner upper arm!
Rant: Being told I can’t scratch this insane itch.
Rave: Am about to make the coffee run of a lifetime!
Rave: I like the blog after registration, and I was a skeptic.
Anlir described the problem yesterday Adios. I forget what thread… A possible viral infection paralyzed one side of his vocal cords. Treatment commencing, and lasting for several months? I forget what all, but hopefully he’ll get his voice back soon.
Rant: When doing word processing or some other computer action, I often want to delete a remark and rewrite it. When I put the coursor on the point and start scanning, it runs ahead of me, past what I want to delete. That bugs me.
Does anyone know how to correct that?
Word processing is much better than typing, but I wish it wouldn’t try to help.
Rant/Rave
The Gamecocks have another late night game tomorrow. They play Arkansas in Fayetteville at eight, NC time.
But, by then, I will have already set my clock back an hour, so that mitigates the problem somewhat.
The world is full of problems isn’t it.
There’s a scripture verse for that, but I don’t have time to look it up.
;-D
What did I do wrong?
Adios,
Check yesterday’s “Whirled Views” (#46) for details on my voice.
#12 “When I put the coursor on the point and start scanning, it runs ahead of me, past what I want to delete.”
Chas,
Not sure what you mean by “scanning.” Do you mean doing click-and-drag with the mouse, to highlight a section of text? How big a block of text are we talking about (a few words, a few sentences, a few paragraphs)? And how good is your mouse control in general (do you have trouble getting the mouse to point at the spot you want)?
Pauline: Take your post as example. Start with “Do you mean …….” You want to delete “with a mouse”. When I go and start dragging the coursor across, it highlites the entire line, or more. That is a small example, I could hit “delete” a dozen times, but if I wanted to delete a line, it highlites several. I can move slowly, but it still runs ahead of me.
Rant: Spilled several doses of some very expensive medicine for a sick, whiny child.
Rave: It is a pretty enough day to go to the park.
Rant: No one at the park for him to play with.
Rave: I have a smart, beautiful, usually healthy child to complain about. Will try the park again after school lets out.
@Chas: There are two ways around it:
1. Use the keyboard arrow keys and the shift key to select exactly what you want.
2. Change the settings. For Word:
Tools -> Options -> Edit Tab -> Deselect “When selecting, automatically select entire word”
Rant: People who say Daylight SavingS Time
Rave: An extra hour of sleep Saturday night
Chas, you can also move the mouse ‘backward’ to find your end point. Click to highlight, drag a while, don’t unclick, but reverse your direction if you overshot your destination.
Changing your mouse speed might help, too.
Derek’s first suggestion looks the most accurate, though.
RANT: The blog is still not letting my comments post immediately. Maybe it needs some bran muffins?
RAVE: I now have an excuse to guess what people will say before they actually say it.
I’ll start now. Random, that is sooo funny!! (What is funny, I don’t know yet. That is up to Random to decide, but he better hurry up so his funny post will appear before the constipated server posts mine.)
Rant: A totally boring World Series this year.
Rave: It’s becoming better and better hot tub weather all the time, and since I retired from my job last week I can enjoy the hot water whenever I want!
Rave: My mouse apparently is much better behaved than Chas’ mouse. It highlights exactly what I want to, unless I want less than a single word (in which case I would follow Derek’s advice).
Rant: Glasses are expensive! My 8-year-old is getting his first pair of glasses, and the exam plus glasses came to about $270.
Rave: He’s thrilled about getting glasses. He’s disappointed it will take a whole week.
Rant: The real estate market is tough right now.
Rave: I was offered some contract work at an hourly rate.
Rant/Rave: I was too excited to ask what that rate would be!!!!
RANT: About an hour later… none of my comments have appeared.
RAVE
I enjoyed the discussion at the end of yesterday’s Whirled Views thread. It’s still going on, I think..
RANT
Yesterdays threads always get old too quickly. I mean that they disappear from the main page and are too hard to get to.
RAVE
There was some very good comedy on TV last night. I watched Ugly Betty, The Office, and the Colbert Report. Really funny stuff!
Everyone loves to bash on the state of the entertainment industry these days, so it’s always nice to be thoroughly entertained and spend the night laughing out loud on the couch.
Derek and Pauline:
Thanks, I have followed Derek’s instructions. I have used Pauline’s technique before, but only after I got frustrated with trying to make the highlighted area stop.
I haven’t tried it yet, but it makes sense.
Mommy: You had me scared for a minute. I had to go back to see if I had said “savings”. But I’m innocent. Some add the “s” because it’s easier to say. My wife always adds the possessive when she talks about stores. i.e. “Belks”, “Pennys” etc. But it really isn’t easy to say, “I’m going to Belk”.
Rant: This has been a difficult week due to an unexpected & troubling incident on Monday.
Rave: God has held me steady & helped me deal with it in a gentle yet firm manner. And He is in the process of bringing peace to the situation. (If the people involved cooperate with Him.)
Mommy- Oops! It was me! How embarassing OK, now I have a rant, though it’s old and tired-
I miss the preview feature!
Rave: The movie “Meet the Robinsons” is out on DVD - IMHO the best movie Disney has put out since the death of Walt and possibly the best they’ve ever put out!!
Rave: The happiest day of the year - when we turn the clocks back! One blissful extra hour of sleep.
Rant: I usually squander my one blissful extra hour of sleep.
I guess ya’ll have figured out I don’t like winter.
Anlir:
Good point. You reminded me that when I was working in the DC area, there was a couple of months when I saw no daylight at all except on the weekends.
And then you could live in Northern Alaska where the sun doesn’t shine for several months (or at least is not up for very long). But then, you get those midnight softball games in full daylight come July!
Nor rant nor rave: People say daylight savings as in “savings and loan.” Turning the clock is a kind of savings–daylight savings.
Rant: the DMV’s ugly insistence on “driver license” instead of “driver’s license.”
Rave: Standard time finally returns.
Rave: “Best Halloween ever” quote from the gothic princess.
Rant: Slow dial-up which keeps kicking me off-line.
Rave: That life is so good right now that I can complain about something relatively petty.
Congrats, OUTKAST, on your retirement. I hope you will enjoy it as much as my husband and I do. I also hope you will do much that is good and productive with this new time of life!
KI: Life is rough isn’t it?
Re: Slow dial up. It continues with DSL. Nothing is ever fast enough. Don’t you often stand with your hand on the door of the microwave, impatiently waiting for it to finish?
A lot of people here don’t even know what the proverb “A watched pot never boils” means.
Right Outkast. Congratulations. It took me a while to get used to retirement. I was always looking around, feeling that I had to be doing something. Now I have too much to do. I hope to get caught up this winter.
Rave: Hillary Clinton being “exposed” on immigration issues during the recent Dem debate.
Rant: Ever notice the way that some speak to her? I remember watching the YouTube debate and seeing someone from the crowd speaking to her directly and calling her “Hillary.” Even if I don’t like her politics, she is a United States Senator. Show a little respect and call her “Senator Clinton” at least. I don’t see folks referring to Senator Obama by his first name, but then again I don’t usually watch the Dem debates.

How do you make a laugh?
Purdue just ran a kickoff for a touchdown against Penn State.
GO BOILERMAKERS!
Purdue is giving the game away.
