Treasure map
By watching TV commercials, you’d think that the Big Gift to Get this year was some kind of GPS device to help you find your way to the mall you visit every week. But the Library of Congress is very old school, and they like old maps, and they just got a brand new old map. And there’s something of real interest on it. Read about what’s on that map, and who put it there, and how your history teacher might have lied to you about it.

Two comments:
1) I wonder what “Vespucci” means. Why aren’t we known as “Vespuccians”?
2)
I have always wondered why we are the world’s biggest exporter of pornography. Sad, that.
Mexicans are big about saying that they are Americans too. They consider an American to be any citizen of the New World, not just the USA.
Mexicans have it correct. South America, Central America, North America, we are all Americans. Hence the Pan-American games includes not all athletes from the United States of America, but from all those regions.
#s 2&3 - Not just Mexicans, but all Latin Americans call themselves Americans, and some get upset when we refer to ourselves that way, as if we think ourselves the only Americans. In the Caribbean, they have an adjective for us: estadounidense, which would translate as “United Statesian”.
I don’t have any problem with all of them (correctly) calling themselves Americans. I just object to so many of them coming illegally into the USA (and then getting demanding about their “rights” here).
Hear hear, KRM.
Fascinating. I can’t wait to check this out next time I’m in DC.
Canadians will tell you they are Americans, too, and it’s certainly true that all the countries on both continents are American, but the reason the citizens of this country are usually the only ones called “Americans” is that we’re the only country that uses the word as part of our name.

Maybe he was watching an NBA game on TV.
