Meet Mrs. Huckabee

Ever since Mike Huckabee catapulted into the national spotlight, we’ve heard a lot about the former Baptist minister. But what of his wife, Janet, the former first lady of Arkansas?

In this tumultuous campaign season, she’s always been the inconspicuous presence at her husband’s side, standing just behind him, quietly offering support.

But anybody who thinks Janet Huckabee is background material, hasn’t heard of her high-profile daredevil days as Arkansas’ first lady.

In those days, Mrs. Huckabee, or Mrs. H–as she’s known–could be seen jumping out of planes, playing paintball, paddling in a cardboard canoe and brandishing a rifle (yes, she hunts–turkey usually, but she’s also trapped bears).

Sounds like she’d make a fun first lady–perhaps shake things up a bit in stodgy Washington.

Kristin: Ever since Mike Huckabee catapulted into the national spotlight, we’ve heard a lot about the former Baptist minister. …

Frank: But not enough, IMHO. I’d encourage you to read and pass around Pastor Bret McAtee’s pieces on:

    - a Huckabee appearance at his homeschool basketball game; and

    - Huckabee’s faux conservatism.

  2. Whew! Pastor Bret seems to have a lot of anger against Huckabee. Wonder what it all stems from?

  3. Mrs. Huckabee sounds tougher than most of the men in Washington. (She sounds tougher than me, too.)

  4. Frank, that semiliterate and angry blog post probably reveals more about Pastor Bret than Governor Huckabee.

To the topic, Mrs. H. might be a refreshing change in Washington. Hope she wouldn’t lose her genuineness and humility.

Not sure how good a leader Huck would be but Ive been impressed by his book. The circumstances of his taking over after Clintonista Governor Jim Guy Tucker resigned and then “withdrew” his resignation.. that is fascinating reading!

Frank, I lamented yesterday that no one had yet sent me mail, etc. Well, someone did. Overnight a Ron Paul supported put a small flyer in the mailbox. This was hand-delivered, not through the mail. Apparently, Dr. Paul wants waiters, etc., to be able to keep their tips tax free. How old is Ron Paul? They keep saying McCain is the oldest, but is he?

Back to Mrs. Huckabee: I saw a GMA piece this morning on her. She admitted that the bears were sleeping. But I sure do give her credit for jumping out of a plane. And she can really wield a hammer. She seemed like a normal, everyday person. I think this is a happy couple, nice people. I agree with Sawgunner “not sure how good a leader Huck would be….” but someone like his wife could accomplish a lot as First Lady.

  7. This seems as good a place to bring this up as anywhere else . . .

Has anyone noticed a slight physical resemblance, and a few similar mannerisms, shared by Governor Huckabee and the character in Fox Network’s show “24″ known as President Charles Logan?

We are power-watching last season’s DVDs and this came to me for some reason. The resemblance is more striking without Logan’s beard as he appeared in previous season’s episodes. His resemblance to Richard Nixon seems intentionally made by the show, but this is a little more a subtle and probably unintentional.

    Frank (#1):

I used your link and read the pieces by Pastor McAtee. His criticisms of Huckabee seemed to have some merit. At least I thought so until I got to the end and discovered that Pastor McAtee, like yourself, supports Ron Paul for president.

He thinks Huckabee is a liberal statist in Jesus togs, but he likes a semi-anarchist libertarian in Jesus togs? So, considering the source of the Huckabee criticism, I think I’ll reserve my judgment for a while yet. Nice try.

Here is an article about Mrs. Huckabee’s unsuccessful run for Arkansas Secretary of State and how it almost cost her husband his place as governor.

    Here is the last paragraph.

“Mr. Huckabee was already being accused of having pretensions to royalty. For example, he accepted $23,000 in clothing and gift certificates from Jennings Osborne, a wealthy supporter and appointee, in 2000 alone, then sued to block the state ethics commission from investigating such gifts. But his wife’s campaign difficulties have added to the governor’s burden. Her insistence on her own 24-hour state police detail, her crisscrossing the state to campaign events in a giant trooper-driven Ford Excursion provided by the state and her travel in and out of Arkansas on the state airplane, both with and without her husband, for reasons the governor’s office refuses to disclose all produced a month’s worth of bad press for both Huckabees at the start of the fall campaign.”

I wonder if Mrs. Huckabee was skydiving from the Arkansas state airplane during all those undisclosed secret trips on state business.

I enjoyed the link as well. I found it interesting to see that he supported Ron Paul.

Huckabee’s “Jesus” campaign is built on emotion rather than logic.

I am worried that US politics is becoming a matter of emotion. I wish Race, Gender, Religion, and Age were eradicated from politics. I find it idiotic that people would vote based on these issues.

It leads to a failed democracy when minorities can be bullied by the majority for reasons of race, gender, religion, or age. We should not pick our president based on these shallow criteria.

I personally would elect a 70 year old African-American Female Muslim if I thought that she would make the best president.

Evangelicals are electing a “Jesus” candidate. I hope in 25 years they do not complain when Atheists vote in an Atheist president.

It will serve them right for abusing religion as a political tool.

NJLawyer (6): How old is Ron Paul? They keep saying McCain is the oldest, but is he?

Frank: Ron Paul is almost exactly one year older than McCain. According to their Wikipdeia entries, Paul was born 20 Aug 35, and McCain was born 29 Aug 36.

    I.e., Paul is 72 1/2, and McCain is 71 1/2.

And of course, I love Dr. Paul’s idea that service personnel who are paid an hourly rate below minimum wage should not have to pay income taxes on their tips.

Michael Martin (8): I used your link and read the pieces by Pastor McAtee. His criticisms of Huckabee seemed to have some merit. At least I thought so until I got to the end and discovered that Pastor McAtee, like yourself, supports Ron Paul for president.

Frank: This, class, is what is known as a non sequitur, from the Latin meaning “it is not followed.” In a non sequitur, a conclusion is posited that “does not follow” from the premise(s).

Let us briefly examine Mr. Martin’s error in reasoning:

I used your link and read the pieces by Pastor McAtee.

So far, so good. That is the reason I posted it.

His criticisms of Huckabee seemed to have some merit.

Mr. Martin freely declares that, at first, Pastor McAtee’s criticisms of Huckabee seemed sensible. But alas …

At least I thought so until I got to the end and discovered that Pastor McAtee, like yourself, supports Ron Paul for president.”

Michael, how does the validty of Pastor McAtee’s criticism of Huckabee hang on who he supports for president?

Would his criticisms have remained valid had he voiced support for Fred Thompson, Mittt Romney, or John McCain instead?

If so, how are his criticisms nullified merely by virtue of his support for Ron Paul?

Lastly, Michael, may I suggest that you at least consider Pastor Chuck Baldwin’s reasons for supporting Ron Paul? I’d be only too glad to interact with your objections to them.

One thing is certain: I won’t dismiss your criticisms of Ron Paul merely because you support (insert other Republican candidate’s name here).

    Frank (#13):

For all your “careful” reasoning and the explanation to your lowly students about non sequitur conclusions, you don’t seem very careful in your reading.

I did not say or imply that Pastor McAtee’s criticisms of Huckabee were nullified when I learned that McAtee was a Ron Paul supporter. However, knowing where McAtee is coming from gives me pause as I now wonder about McAtee’s judgment. Just as I would not be convinced to support a candidate by a questionable endorsement, neither would I be convinced to oppose a candidate by criticism from a questionable source.

In my opinion McAtee’s criticisms may now be questionable. So I will, as I said, reserve judgment on Huckabee until I know more.

    New Quote from Huckabee:

    Regarding the confederate flag.

“You don’t like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag,” Huckabee told supporters in Myrtle Beach, S.C. “In fact, if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we’d tell ‘em what to do with the pole, that’s what we’d do.”

Yes, Pastor Huckabee what exactly would you tell them to do with the pole?

Michael Martin (14): … knowing where McAtee is coming from gives me pause as I now wonder about McAtee’s judgment. Just as I would not be convinced to support a candidate by a questionable endorsement, neither would I be convinced to oppose a candidate by criticism from a questionable source.

In my opinion McAtee’s criticisms may now be questionable. …

Frank: This still comes down to “Since I know he’s wrong to support Ron Paul, I question his criticisms of Mike Huckabee.” Rather than putting his criticism of Huck in the “hold” basket, perhaps you should open your mind to the possibility that Ron Paul’s positions make more sense from a conservative/Republican perspective than anything the other five are saying.

Richard Viguerie thinks it does …

Richard Viguerie Goes Online for Paul
    By Jose Antonio Vargas

Rep. Ron Paul continues to trail his opponents in national polls. He’s yet to finish in the top three of any state contests. (He placed fourth in the Michigan primary last night, ahead of Rudy Giuliani, whom he beat in Iowa, and Fred Thompson, whom he bested in New Hampshire.)

But his passionate, Web-savvy supporters have always forged a community online, where sites independent of his campaign such as Daily Paul, Primarily Paul and Ron Paul Nation have continually popped up.

And the latest may be one of the most impressive of all. Ultimate Ron Paul . com was created by Richard Viguerie, often dubbed the “funding father of the conservative movement.” Viguerie, who founded Conservative Digest magazine in the 1970s, pioneered the use of computerized direct mail, helping raise billions for conservative organizations. Most recently, he authored Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big-Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause.

“I remain uncommitted to any of the Republican candidates,” Viguerie said in a release, “but it is clear that Ron Paul is truly a principled conservative in the grand tradition of Robert Taft, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan.”

He added: “By standing consistently for individual liberty and constitutionalism, Ron Paul has differentiated himself from all the other candidates, whose allegiance is to Big Government Republicanism.”

Michael, is it possible that your opposition to Ron Paul is misguided, and that you’re letting it color your opinion of Bret McAtee’s critique of Mike Huckabee?

Eye take grate um-brage at beeng kalled semi-literate. I are not a semi anything!

Deb, asks where all my anger stems from. It stems from the reality that Christians keep supporting people who act contrary to a Christian Worldview.

In a Christian Worldview that State has a very proscribed place. It is to be a minister of justice, and so hence it carries the sword. It does not carry the soup kitchen or the classroom. The State is to protect and yet with these candidates established track record on immigration they all desire to import a new citizenry into this country. How is that protecting the people?

I support Ron Paul because he supports the Constitution — a document that could not have been written in any other climate except one influenced by Biblical Christianity. I support Ron Paul because he sees the greatest danger to America doesn’t lie in realms Muslim or Jewish but rather correctly understand that it lies in realms globalists as American politicians kiss up to guys like George Soros and other internationalists.

Mike Huckabee is a charlatan. Only in a world where Christians have become the village idiots would they not be able to see through this guys one pony trick. Every night before the Democrats go to bed they pray to heaven above that the Republicans nominate Huckabee. The landslide that will occur in such an event will be earth-shattering.
