Rants! & Raves! 4.25
Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:
1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.
2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.
3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.
Have fun!

Rant: As I mentioned in an earlier WV, my family is experiencing “persecution” (in a way) right now, by a few people who are spreading untrue stories about our family and my husband. Dear hubby comes home looking like he’s been run over by a train. So my rant is that people who claim to love the Lord can be so destructive!!
Rave: On my morning run today, at 4:40, the birds ALL starting singing together after I’d been running for about 10 minutes. And the flowers smelled so beautiful! Isn’t the Lord wonderful???
Blessings!!!
Rant: Spring is still not showing much willingness to get here.
Rave: I leave today for our District Women’s Convention. I will see friends from across the state I haven’t seen for at least two years. We will have Bible Studies, business, speakers and enjoy each others fellowship.
MO4-I detest gossip and in times like this–enjoy the blessings. God is Great.
Momoffour, people who gossip are usually jealous and/or insecure. I know you don’t want to talk about it, and I think that’s wise. I don’t remember who said it (it may have been the Queen or her mother), but the advice “never complain, never explain” should be applied here. Hold your head up, go about your business and leave it at that. Having been a “victim” of this myself, I can tell you that what goes around comes around, and the truth comes to light — at which point, you will have to gracious, too. Leave the punishment to God.
RAVE: Spring has sprung in Jersey. We had beautiful weather this past week (it’ll rain over the weekend, but that’s okay).
RANT: I have to go to the bank again just to get gas money.
Rant:
We lost the final appeal with our insurance company to pay for the medications my wife absolutely needs to have any kind of quality of life. For the past 8 months we have been paying $1483 per month for health insurance and another $1560 per month for her medication. The Democrats and their universal health care system are starting to look pretty good to me lately.
Rave:
God has promised to meet all our needs
Rant: I had dinner last night with 3 hard core republicans. One runs a $100 million food distribution company, one runs the operations of a $6 billion food service company and the other was an orthopedic surgeon who also owns a chain of BBQ places. OF course the election came up and I asked them to write down on a piece of paper who they thought McCain would pick for his VP that would help him the most to win the election against Hillary or Obama. I was shocked and saddened that all 3 wrote down Joe Lieberman. What is the Conservative republican world coming to? I ended up paying for dinner too another rant:-)
Rave: I bet all 3 of them $20 each that even McCain was not as stupid as they were to pick a socialist more left wing than Hillary by far and only slightly right of Obama like Lieberman as his running mate.
Rant: Paid $3.65 for gasoline yesterday, and that was at Wal-Mart!
Rave: I did have an old gas card (a Wal-Mart gift card that entitles one to a .03 discount per gallon) just lying around in the truck. OK, so it only had a buck and change on it, but every little bit helps.
Rant: After meeting Chas and Ivan the Terrible live and in person in two consecutive weeks, there was no one on the blog this week to meet.
Rave: Went to the shooting range with the missus (Cameron) last Monday to try out the 9mm. Shot two boxes of ammo. Fun stuff!
Rant: The range is about 20 miles away, and gas is $3.65 a gallon (see above)!
Rant: While on the way to the shooting range. The “check engine” light (otherwise known as the idiot light) came on in our car.
Rave: However, upon checking the gas cap (did I mention that gas is $3.65 a gallon?), I discovered it was loose, and the instruction manual and the dealer both assured us that was the reason for the light coming on.
Rant: I was in a car accident last weekend, and was cited for it even though I wasn’t at fault.
Rave: No one was hurt.
Rave: I found out today that a cousin of mine is possibly going to be on national television for her seminars on how the church deals with divorce.
Rave: I got the new Andy Hunter album yesterday.
Momoffour, Metanoia, and Yoshiyahu, my sympathies to you and my prayers for comfort and justice.
Momoffour, We have been in your position also. Actually 3 times. It seems this is one of the devil’s best tool in Christian groups. Very sad. You will be so tempted to lash out, so I pray that you will be able to respond the way God would want you to.
The plus side is that you will learn to rely more and more on your Heavenly Father instead of people. God is refining you and it is a painful process. Pray for those involved. Bring your complaint before God and let Him deal with it.
Momoffour - Psalm 37:6 -
“He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.”
Metanoia - Have you tried contacting the drug company? Someone here on the blog (Llama, maybe?) once wrote that some drug companies will work with you to afford their drug.
Llama - Maybe they’re all so rich cuz they don’t pay for dinner!
Rant
- So many people I know who are hurting due to the insensivity or downright meanness of others.
Rave
- God is the lifter of our heads, & He is the God of all comfort!
Rave: Traveled to Grand Rapids for work this week. It is a beautiful city and the weather cooperated perfectly.
Mommy, Grand Rapids, Michigan or Minnesota? Glad you had good weather.
#10 Karen O,
They learned well and have never forgotten that no one ever got rich by spending their money.
No truer words were ever spoken
I still am stunned that they all said McCain was going to pick Lieberman as his VP. These guys aren’t wrong very often and the thought of this coming true just makes me ill.
Home many people on this blog would be happy if Joe ended up McCains VP?
Llama,
I won’t be happy with McCain anyway…
Just one factor in that unhappiness is Juan Hernandez as one of his advisors.
Rant: i have finals next week
Rave: I’m done with classes for this year (pending the 1PM class)
Rave: my roommate and i have started getting along again
Rant: we only have a week left of school and my roommate and i have FINALLY started getting along again.
Rave: my roommate has started wearing deodorant for the first time in his life. the room no longer smells like decomposing flesh.
Rave: midwest weather is beautiful.
Metanoia, I don’t know why they rejected your appeal, the wording in your contract may be clear, but then again, it might not be. Their denial is just their opinion, if it’s not clear. Do you know any lawyers in your area who might take a look at the contract and confirm their reading of it?
Can I do just raves? I waited all day yesterday for this!!
OK, just one rant:
I have rodents making their presence very well known all over my yard. I know I have a groundhog in the backyard, so it could even be his family, as it looks like more than I’d expect from voles or moles.
After reading the other rants, I’m afraid I do have to add gas prices to my own.
Yoshiyahu [#7]: Does your cousin have any materials on that subject that are easily accessible? That theme is particularly pertinent to what the local church that we work under is dealing with at the moment.
MO4- I can relate to your issue although I have no idea what it really is. I was the subject of a recall election on our local school board several years ago. I was appalled by the number of people whom I had known as friends all my life that turned against me and our family and didn’t even question the lies. After the election (which I won by losing) and things settled out many of these people apologized for being so blind. Forgiveness is an important step. It is also important to remember that all things work together for good to those who love God. Sometimes it is hard to immagine, though, with the hard things we go through to see the good.
Rave: My dad is visiting for a few days while my Mom and DW attend a District Womens Convention. Looking forward to a good visit and sightseeing.
Rant: Trying to jump through hoops to organize a Christian Retreat at the prison and getting very little cooperation from Prison administration. It takes months to organize a 6 hour event.
Here’s another rave, I think. 8*) God has presented an opportunity for my husband and I to minister to the very family that started the problems we’ve had the past few weeks. I must confess that I am a little nervous. I have been so upset for the hurt it has caused, not only for my husband, but especially amongst other Christians who are caught in the middle and don’t know what to believe. I have not been in this person’s physical presence for a few weeks. Please pray that they would receive us, and that I wouldn’t open my big red-headed mouth and say something that shouldn’t be said.
Blessings!
Momoffour - What kind of ministry do you & your husband do?
Christian school.
I just have to say this:
Our small town has gasoline at “only” $3.409, 19¢ cheaper than the next town south and 29¢ cheaper than across the river. Glad I don’t have to go out of my way to get the cheapest gas around here. Glad I sold the diesel VW, as that fuel sells for $4.019 now! (BTW- when will gasoline companies get rid of that 9/10¢ on the prices?)
“Rave - God is the lifter of our heads, & He is the God of all comfort!”
That is so true Karen and I’m so grateful for that truth! Thanks for the reminder!
Rant:, well not really, it just irritates me when a guy stands in front of a large group of people and opens by saying, “How y’all doin’?” I realize Minnie Pearl got famous coming on and saying “HOWDY! …, and that it means the same thing. I never open a meeting by asking a question I don’t expect an answer for.
Rave: Our Lions club collected 308 pair of glasses this month. This is not unusual really.
AJISUUN. If any of the ladies to whom you minister need glasses, contact a Lion’s club. That’s what we’re for. (That goes the same for any of you. If you can make a case of need for eye exams and glasses, contact the Lions.)
TomBob, where do you go to school? Somewhere in Indiana?
Momoffour, I have, and will continue praying for you. I’m so concerned that I would not, under any circumstances, remind you that it’s “opportunity for my husband and me …” As I told Lynn, I’ve known PhD’s to do that.
If Cameron’s now a “pistol packing mama”, I’m really going to have to behave. But I always behave because even packing heat, she wouldn’t be as bad as Elvera if I got out of line.
Cheryl, congratulations on your first rave. I have been praying for that too.
Several of you are regularly on my prayer list.
Do you ever listen to talk radio? You will hear the 437th person who calls, start out with, “How ‘ya doin’”?
Rant - my hairdresser moved away. I had been with her for about 4 years. Do you know how hard it is to find one you like?
Rave - Tried a new hairdresser today, recommended by my daughter. I think this one’s a keeper. (Score on the first try!) I really like the way she did my hair.
Rave - Since I was out anyway, I stopped by the nail place and had a pedicure while I was at it. First one of the sandal season. My winter feet were horrible!
Rave - DH said that he wants to take my beautiful self out to dinner tonight after he cuts the grass.
Rave - tomorrow we are going to the wedding of a childhood friend of my children. A fellow military brat. We’ve known this young man since he was in kindergarten. He will make a wonderful husband.
Rave - Since it is an evening wedding, and it is close to Cabella’s in PA, I told DH we could stop there on the way and go shopping at “Bronners for Bubbas” (for all of you Michiganders).
Peter L., I love your gravatar. All it needs is an Arizona sunset behind the saguaro and it would be perfect.
Rant: My weekend being cut short by a business trip.:-(
Rave: Where in the World is Matt Lauer starts Monday!
Rave: NBA and NHL playoff games every night!
Rave: The Brothers Karamazov in the special prose edition of Friday Poetry!
Rant: Now I want to read the book again, and I don’t have the time to.
Rant: I am reminded of all the other books I have that I want to read but don’t have the time for.
Rave: Only three weeks of school, and then I will have ample reading time!
Cheryl- I took that picture back in 1976 in Sabino Canyon north of Tucson, with an old 110 instamatic camera. The sun is the glow behind the saguaro. You can see the whole picture here: http://tinyurl.com/4xnkp8 .
Peter L,
The other day I actually saw a gas station that didn’t have the 9/10 in their prices, and I was shocked!
Chas, thank you for your prayers (for me and for others).
Rave: Whatever tornadoes touched down in the surrounding area do not seem to have come close enough to do any damage (that I’ve heard of yet) in our town.
Rant: Heavy rains have caused flooding of streets and basements. Our street is fine but our basement is not. There’s much more water this time than during the thaw we had earlier this spring. I used the shop-vac to vacuum up about five gallons of water so far, and that was only half of one room. I’m giving my aching back a rest before heading back down to do more, which I’m guessing will be at least another 10-15 gallons at least.
Rave: We are getting a tax refund.
Rant: It looks like we’ll be spending the tax refund to get work done on the basement.
Can anyone tell me what section of the yellow pages to look in to find someone to look at our leaky basement?
Pauline, you have a tricky problem. You should look for someone who has experience like yours and get references. It’s possible to spend a lot of money and still not get the problem fixed. You will never know until the next time. I had a basement in Annandale that leaked when we had extreme rain/snow. I solved it by not putting anything down there that could be ruined and buying a sump pump for about $100. Extending the patio outside helped. Fixing the leak is going to cost much more than $100. Big bucks, I expect. Your first project should be to determine where the water is coming from. Sometimes diverting the water is all you need.
OTOH. If it keeps up, the problem will only get worse. Water makes it’s own way. As I said, it’s tricky. Be careful.
CHAS:
yeah… in central-east-north-ish indiana
Chas,
We like to have reading glasses to offer to people in our literacy classes who are having trouble seeing to read. Many of our students are in their 40’s or older and need reading glasses. Let me know how to go about making the request.
AJISUUN, You should start by contacting a local Lions club, if there is one. I understand you are in the Senegal/Gambia area. I will check and get back to you. Let me know for sure where you are. If that doesn’t work, we’ll try something eles. I’m sure there is a way.
AJISUUN, there are four Lions clubs in Dakar, and one in Thies. Let me know where you are.
chas
Chas,
She is definitely in The Gambia–I have contacted her about something else, so I’m sure.
Pauline, if you simply can’t find anyone who’s had similar work done to give a reference, try Waterproofing in the yellow pages, followed by a call to your local Better Business Bureau to weed out the shysters.
TomBob #40: Coincidence? I too am from a school in Indiana…Northeast of Indianapolis and Southeast of South Bend.
Good luck on finals!
AJISUUN: I will try to contact you by e-mail.
AJI: It didn’t work.

Tychus, (at 20)
I’ll ask around and see what I can find out. She lives in Maryland near D.C. so I don’t have a lot of contact with her, but I’ll see what I can find.
Whoops, that should be “Tychicus.”
