A history lesson

How much do you know about the history of Memorial Day? Can you correctly answer the following questions?

  • On what date was Memorial Day first observed?
  • Memorial Day originated with another name. What was it?
  • Memorial Day was founded to honor military personnel who died in … ?

Test your knowledge and find out the answers to these and other questions here. And if you should need a little help, check out these stories here, here, and here–and, of course, there’s always Wikipedia.

So how did you score?

Before checking those sources, I think I can answer the first and third questions (based on a children’s book I recently read by Lynn Cheney with a co-author). I have a good guess for the second one. We’ll see.

Well, my source identifies a date 2 years earlier than your sources. Hmmm. Also, my source identifies Carbondale, Illinois, as the startig point.

  3. I knew #2 and #3. With the multiple choice answers for #1 in the quiz at the first link, I got that one too, but I don’t have the date memorized.

  4. I know #2 and I think #3–but I’m not inclined to go to links to check answers. As to #1, I simply never remember that kind of date without a jingle or something. (”In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”)

    I knew the answers to #s 2 & 3.

Do not read if you don’t want to know the answers (or my attempt at them without checking first).

    Date: sometime in the 1860s.
Name: Decoration Day (I know a few old timers who still call it that.)
War: Our own so-called Civil War. (Is there such a thing? At least the Southerners have it right in calling it the War Between the States.)

    Now to check my answers.

Well, not bad. I disagree with the answers for Question 10: How can only 575,377 died in all wars, when the Civil War had almost that many on its own? Unless they are not counting the Confederate dead in that number.
