Rants! & Raves!

Gravatar  62 Comments

All Hail Anlir!….who reminded me that I forgot to post Rants! & Raves! this morning. For some reason I’ve been stuck on Thursday all day long. Without further ado, use this thread to vent and cheer. Remember the rules:

1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re happy about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.

2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re grumpy about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.

3. You may Rant! about somethingĀ a personĀ said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.

Have fun!

:-)

All right! :-)

Rants! to the writer’s strike. I sure do miss “The Colbert Report”! I wonder what Stephen is up to?

Raves! to a new BBQ joint I found called “Shane’s Rib Shack”. Their BBQ is great!

2. Raves - to the TV writers’ strike. If they shut the industry down long enough, maybe more people will be weaned off of the TV and do other things (read books, talk to each other, make love to their spouses, play with their kids, go to the park/museum/zoo/theater).

3. Rave: My wife was finally given a medication for pain that seems to be working. After 20 years of debilitating chronic pain, that’s a lot to Rave about.

Rant: Our insurance company refuses to pay for it because the medication has not been approved for pain even though it works. At about $900 a month this will be a budget buster. I’ll trust God to provide. I have no other choice. I need no other option.

Rave: Not having to work this week, thus having time for my own writing–and it’s going great!

Rant: There’s never enough time! :-(

Rave: Our friend Laurie who was stuck at Stanford hospital and not likely to live, is inching toward recovery back in Sonoma County! Prayer and medicine work together! She’s been awake enough to interact with her kids!

Rant: Antiobiotic-resistent infections. :-(

5. 5. Gravatar by Scott Robinson 11.09.07 at 4:22 pm

Rant: Who are these people picking against my Buckeyes in Anlir’s pick’em contest?

Rave: Good idea with the pick’em contest; keeps things a bit more light-hearted.

6. 6. Gravatar by Anlir 11.09.07 at 4:27 pm

:-( Rants! to the a new “roving” van that sets up and snaps your picture if you’re speeding, and mails you a ticket. I think it’s nothing more than a revenue “enhancer”.

:-) Raves! to sleeping in tomorrow. I have worked like a dog all week.

7. :-D - Our 5-yr old grandson will be the ring bearer in a family wedding tomorrow.

8. Rant: Slow dial-up and then getting knocked off-line over and over again!!

Rave: Life is so good, this is my big complaint.

VS: How fun! Tell him not to lick the other members of the wedding party when he is standing with them. Or will they have him sit down right away? Believe it or not, my grandson was standing with the other groomsmen and licked the suit of the guy in front of him. We could only laugh. It must have looked like it would taste good. LOL! Prepare yourself for anything.

9. 9. Gravatar by janie 11.09.07 at 5:05 pm

Rant :-( My 8-month-old granddaughter has had a bad cold for way too long!

Rave :-D We managed to get our fall yard clean-up done yesterday!

10. 10. Gravatar by Anlir 11.09.07 at 5:16 pm

:-( Rants! to our cat, Simon, who won’t leave me alone until I put my hands under the pillow at night. It makes it hard to change the channel on the TV.

:-) Raves! to Simon who gently pats me with his paw if I don’t pay attention to him. I’ve never seen a cat do that.

11. KI - To stay on topic I will give you a hint.

Rave - Buying a new modem for my computer solved the on-going problem of being knocked off line over and over again. The modem was $40 but well worth the aggravation. (We have dial up as well)

LOL at the licking! Did the groomsmen keep on ticking? :-)

12. Rant:

Having to take the shop cat (kitten) off my desk at the office.

Rave:

He’s great fun to play with, but distracting from work… May be building a cat tower/playhouse next week… (Saw him jumping at a spot on the wall early today - hilarious!)

13. Rave: beautiful fall weather, and I got the grass seed all planted (the weather hasn’t been conducive, and I had kids for a month and no extra time, or I’d have done it earlier–a tree fell in my backyard this summer and killed most of my grass in the back)

Rant: I’ve been trying for a couple months, on and off, to get DSL up and running, and even the second new thingy I purchased isn’t helping me because I now have too many cords to have any idea what plugs in where; time for this Scottish lady to give up and hire a professional

Rave: But on that note, not hiring a professional to design my websites saved me well over $1,000. I got price quotes over $1,000 and $15/month for just one site, less complicated than my main one, and I ended up doing three sites for a total of $10 a month by doing it myself with a template through 1and1.com; I just got it mostly finished this week, so it counts as this week’s rave. One of the “secondary” sites, my anonymous one, is linked to my name above. Other than a few links I’ll have to redo, it’s finished.

14. Anlir, a little more info on Shane’s Rib Shack. They advertise up here in Louisville a lot. Is the BBQ dry or wet?

15. 15. Gravatar by Anlir 11.09.07 at 7:37 pm

TJ,

What I had was wet. It’s pulled. The chicken and the pork are both good. And I liked the sides too. Reasonably priced - I think it’s $8 for a huge sandwich, side, and drink. I haven’t tried the ribs yet. Oh, the wings are good too.

#7
VS,
Our son was ring-bearer when he was 5, for his uncle’s wedding. He kept practicing at home, walking around growling. When we asked him why, he explained that he was going to be the “ring bear.”

At the wedding rehearsal, he did fine, but we were still a little nervous, not sure how well he would do the next day, especially whether he could sit quietly next to the groomsmen or if he would need to go sit with me (I was about the only adult he knew who wasn’t taking part in the ceremony somehow).

Well, he started down the aisle just fine, but then he noticed the flower girl (his 4-year-old second cousin) dropping petals in the aisle as she walked next to him. Upset at the mess she was making, he started picking up the petals for her. We had to quickly explain to him that it was OK for her to make a mess with the petals. He did just fine the rest of the ceremony.

Pauline that is an adorable story - Hope someone took a picture of you speaking to your little one -

Back on topic:
Rave: We had a chili fundraiser at work today, to benefit some co-workers who have had serious personal difficulties recently (daughter in a serious car accident, major damage to house from a storm, etc.) I didn’t hear how much we made total, but instead of just giving the requested $5 per bowl of chili, some people were giving upwards of $25 (for which they were offered “all you can eat” - though I don’t think many of them would try to eat five bowls of chili). I was pleased that my chili was the first to be finished (though before I got to get a bowl of it myself), since I’ve never thought of myself as a chili chef. But mine was “mild and meaty” which probably appealed to anyone who didn’t want to make a meal of the hotter or vegetarian versions.

Rave: At parent-teacher conferences last night, the only “complaint” I heard was from our older son’s German teacher, who said that he was too modest and should let people know that he made All-State choir.
I also found out from our younger (autistic) son’s teachers that he is doing better at fitting in with the class, and one of the teachers is helping him learn coping strategies for when other kids try to get him upset (they know how easily he cries).

Rant: I can’t figure out how to get the handle off my bathtub faucet to replace the washer. A co-worker tells me that once I remove the screw in front, the handle should pull right off. It doesn’t. He suggested using a hammer - lightly - to help loosen the handle, but I haven’t tried yet - I’m afraid I’ll break something and then we’ll have to call the plumber.

19. 19. Gravatar by Chas 11.09.07 at 8:28 pm

Pauline, You might try using a sharp object (Do you know what an Ice pick is? My son didn’t.) to remove some of the gunk that collects around the handle of faucets. It’s especially bad in hard water areas. Also, don’t forget to try WD-40 before calling a pro.

20. 20. Gravatar by KayVee 11.09.07 at 9:12 pm

Rant: I drove 45 minutes to my cardiologist’s office today only to be told he was performing an emergency procedure at the hospital next door. They had called my home after I left, but it didn’t occur to them to call my cell phone.

Rave: I had my 17 year old granddaughter to myself for a couple of days.

Question: How do you make a font bold here?

Pauline: Try a hard water solvent, like Lime-A-Way before you use that ice pick.

21. Kayvee,
Bold, italics, and underlining are done basically the same way. Put the . Type the word(s) you want bolded, then type .
When the preview finally arrives, it’ll be easier to play with our options.

22. Rant: When my wife forgets to log me out and log herself in. That’s Cameron in # 21, not my John Knox bearded self.

Rant: Wet BBQ. If the BBQ at Shane’s Rib Shack (the pulled pork) is like that wet saucy Georgia stuff, I’ll pass.

Rave: That we are no longer the food laws. Pork is yummy! :)

Rave: If you ever find yourself in Greenville, SC, check out Smokin’ Stokes BBQ. They have dry pulled BBQ with several options for sauce, including a world championship recipe sauce made from Cheerwine (that’s a brand of cherry cola for all you non-southerners). It’s the best sweet sauce you will ever taste, guaranteed!

23. 23. Gravatar by Pauline 11.09.07 at 9:35 pm

Kayvee,
I don’t think TJ’s instructions in #21 displayed correctly (at least not in my browser). Might not work for me either, but I’ll try.

To put a word in bold:
First type “”
Type the word you want in bold
Now type “”

To do italics, it’s exactly the same except use the letter i instead of b.

24. 24. Gravatar by Pauline 11.09.07 at 9:39 pm

Nope, didn’t work.
First you type the “less than” symbol - the character that’s to the right of the letter M, using the shift key. Then the letter B. Then the “greater than” symbol - the character to the left of the question mark, also using the shift key.
Next type the word(s) you want in bold.
To end bold, use the less than, a forward slash (the character on the same key with the question mark, not using shift, on most keyboards), the letter B, then the greater than symbol.

25. Huh, I wonder why my instructions didn’t show. I tried to leave enough spaces to fool the filter, but I guess not. Pauline’s #24 is the answer, if you can translate it! :)

26. 26. Gravatar by llama 11.09.07 at 10:15 pm

Rant : The insane Congress overroad Bush’s veto on the water legislation. The Army Corps of Engineers asked for $5 Billion. The Senate passed $14 Billion, the House passed $15 Billion and then the congressional conference of House and Senate agreed to $23 Billion in spending. 1p more earmarks for a wasted $18 billion in theisd bill alone. These Democrats make the Republicans look like pikers bnut they are all a bunch of losers - sadly for us.

Rave : My flight back to Virgina was only 20 minutes late tonight :-)

27. 27. Gravatar by Pauline 11.09.07 at 10:36 pm

Here’s a link to see how to make text bold:
http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/_B.html

28. Html instructions (replace the left and right brackets with the less than, greater than symbols)
When you try to demonstrate, the forum software thinks you mean for it to use the html symbols, and makes them disappear.

bolded text here example: bold
italisized text here example: italic
[blockquote]blockquoted text here[/blockquote] example:

quote

[s]strikethrough text here[/s] example: strikethrough

And that’s all I’ve been able to come up with and make work (except for the smilies)…

29. Hmmmm.. well maybe it was underline text
try again
strikethrough
strikethrough

underline

30. Ah this works:

[strike]strikethrough text here[/strike]

Rave! I’m all caught up on deadlines and don’t have to work this weekend!

Rave! We’ve been going to a new church, The Rock, in San Diego, and I love it!

Rave! Started listening to Chuck Swindoll podcasts on my iPod (remember…the one I got for my birthday?) while taking fitness walks. I used to hate walking as a means of exercise (prefer the gym, more immediate results), but Chuck makes walking fun!

Rave! I’m going on a camping-trip-for-two next weekend…just me and my dh!

No Rants! for me this week. Pretty cool. :-)

32. 32. Gravatar by Anlir 11.09.07 at 11:41 pm

Lynn,

What’s a “dh”?

Congrats on no work this weekend! I wish I could say the same. I either have to work tomorrow or Sunday. I left 135 e-mails in my “in” box tonight.

33. 33. Gravatar by Pauline 11.09.07 at 11:56 pm

Anlir,
(Just in case Lynn doesn’t check back, I don’t want to leave you wondering.)
I’m pretty sure “dh” stands for “dear husband”

I had never seen this usage before coming to this blog, but since then I have seen it in one or two other places (all online)

34. Rant: Being confused and indecisive.

Rave: My old/project car isn’t as broken as I thought it was. I can still drive it!

Rave: Good times hanging out with good friends.

:-( Rant! to already seeing Christmas commercials on TV.

:-) Rave! to a really cool purple Christmas tree I spotted in Walgreens tonight. They were already sold out. Yeah, I like purple ;-)

Rant: I just had 2 posts disappear. I thought that got fixed.

39. 39. Gravatar by KayVee 11.10.07 at 1:03 am

That one took, the other 2 were me trying to bold & italicize.

I’ll try again here

40. 40. Gravatar by KayVee 11.10.07 at 1:06 am

OK, #36 & #37 both appeared immediately, can’t imagine what happened with the other 2, but it’s too late to worry about it. Goodnight all & thanks for all the responses to my question. :-)

41. 41. Gravatar by Karen O 11.10.07 at 9:38 am

Anlir - I like purple, too, but not for a Christmas tree! (I’m such a traditionalist.)

Rant: A very emotionally-difficult couple of weeks. :-(

Rave: God helped & sustained me through it. :-)

42. 42. Gravatar by Karen O 11.10.07 at 9:40 am

Anlir - I agree with what you’ve said recently about not only posting rants. People love to complain, but it is so important to look for the good things around us.

43. We should all be thankful that most of our rants, including mine, are trivial. We know from another thread that Evelyn’s (EYG) sister’s husband was killed. (If I understand Cheryl’s post correctly.) but most of us can easily sluff off the rants we have.
Unless the Gamecocks lost to the Gators tonight. I may not get past that.

44. Rant I agree with Anlir about Christmas commercials. They are already having after Christmas sales. I heard Christmas carols on the radio last week.

Rant: Purple Christmas trees. If I ever see one.

45. 45. Gravatar by Peter L 11.10.07 at 10:10 am

Rave: This is the day the LORD has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!

46. Chas, yes, that is correct. EYG’s brother-in-law is the one who died.

Rave: finally went on a date with dh
Rant: finally had time to communicate enough to have a “discussion” that ended poorly
Rave: heard Gary Chapman on the radio talking about the 5 Love Languages
Rave: found an obscure book at a used bookstore by one of my favorite authors

#1 Anlir,

Colbert is staring in my Chantix dreams while he is on hiatus.

49. 49. Gravatar by llama 11.10.07 at 12:42 pm

Purple with silver tinsel Christmas tress would be absolutely perfect with me being a Silo Tech graduate from the real Manhattan - in Kansas and Momma Llama graduating from Pnnk KU Chicken Hawk Land plus her being Jewish and all :-)

50. 50. Gravatar by Anlir 11.10.07 at 3:02 pm

Llama,

Perhaps “Chantix” has not been tested adequately tested on llamas? This could be one of those FDA or secret government experiments ;-)

*****

Can someone tell me how to do a “strikethrough”? I’ve tried:

left hat, “del”, right hat

followed by the word I want to strikeout

left hat, forward slash, “del”, right hat

It doesn’t seem to work.

51. 51. Gravatar by Chas 11.10.07 at 3:20 pm

RAVE

;-)

My wife just received in the mail;

“Your neighbors …might be jealous because you, … are the one and only person in the entire United States of America who can use your 20 Prize Draw Numbers imprinted on the enclosed form for your chance to win an instant bank transfer in the amount of $45,000.00.
Except I wasn’t supposed to discuss this with anyone.

52. Anlir, I think you have to use the word “strike” where you’re using delete…
test

53. 53. Gravatar by Anlir 11.10.07 at 4:46 pm

Thanks Cameron!

Ok, here’s a test:

strikethrough

54. 54. Gravatar by Anlir 11.10.07 at 4:46 pm

It works! :-)

55. Whoo-hoo!

56. 56. Gravatar by Pauline 11.10.07 at 9:43 pm

So why would you want to use strikethrough? I can see its purpose when editing a document, to see what the previous version said. But when would you use it on the blog, and for what?

57. Pauline,
One use I’ve seen is with sarcasm or to reword a phrase to make the tone clearer. A lame example, since it’s late: Georgia beat whooped up on Auburn.
I’ve seen it mostly to reword a liberal or conservative’s spin to a more objective turn of phrase.

58. Pauline, that is a cute story. The flower girl was beside herself with excitement to be in my youngest daughter’s wedding. She was supposed to scatter petals down the aisle too, but she got so nervous at the last minute that she almost ran down the aisle and completely forgot about scattering them. She was pretty bummed, but it was nice for the family who was supposed to clean the church after the wedding. She probably still has the petals in her special basket.

59. This is neither a rant, nor a rave.
this is a test, this is only a test.

60. 60. Gravatar by Chas 11.13.07 at 7:27 am

This is a test

If this had been an actual rant and rave, you would have been notified by your local Our Daily Drudge network of emergency instructions.
