Rants! & Raves!
Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off. Remember the rules:
1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re tickled about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately happy emoticon.
2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re steamed about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately unhappy emoticon.
3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.
Have fun!

I’m raving about my 5 yr old who read a book (age appropriate about 10 pages) with very little assistance from my wife. Once my daughter had a word explained to her she could recollect it when she saw it again.
Not only that, but she did different voices for the different characters in the story!!
On a recent doctor office visit my 5 year old spoke the whole time with a “British” accent!
Rant: Spending all day Wednesday in a dentist chair.
Rave: The White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Ice Cream my husband brought me to make me feel better.
I’m raving about the job our terrific sons and daughters have done in Iraq. Absolutely everything that has been asked of them. My chest swells with pride over our soldiers
I’m ranting about their being sent there in the first place. And Blackwater making their job so difficult. About their benefits being cut. About their lack of medical care and the Walter Reed scandal. About being given dirty water by Halliburton in Iraq. About the money being made off them. About the papers not doing a better job of reporting. About poor equipment and vehicles. About the right pretending to be all patriotic and not showing outrage at the way our soldiers have been treated. It makes me weep.
Rant: My daughter still isn’t sleeping through the night (and getting up three to four times at that!), and therefore I’m living my days in a state of perpetual exhaustion.
Rave: Every morning she greets me with the most beautiful smile and I realize it’s all worth it.
RANT
I just finished a comment on Whirled Views and hit “submit”. Then Wordpress came up and told me I couldn’t.
Those things need to warn us that we need to log in again before we start our post.
I was going to talk Random Name out of leaving us. But now I can’t.
That was supposed to be
(Hang in there Kristin - it’ll change soon!)
Chas,
I love attention. There is a naughty slang expression when this concept is applied to women.
However, I have to set a good example for my granddaughter, even though she is not allowed to use computers and won’t see it.
VS,
There is something to be said in favor of arranged marriages, but don’t you think your grandson and the flower girl are still a bit young to get serious?
Random,
No thoughts on an arranged marriage but more like the “every gurgle and burp and scream was fascinating” line of thinking regarding my grandson.
I was going to rant about children being put to death in Iran, and then the following paragraph popped up in the middle of the story.
FROM THE NEWS:
The United States last executed a person for crimes committed as a juvenile in 2003, but is second only to Iran in such killings since 1989, having put 19 juvenile offenders to death to Iran’s 24 in that 18-year period.
Rant: The kindergarten teacher at my daughter’s Lutheran school was making my daughter dislike school.
Rave: We moved her to public school and, so far, she loves it and her teacher.
(Are we allowed to comment on others’ rants and raves on this thread? Or must we take it to Whirled Views?)
RDEAN, the ethics of capital punishment in general being a separate issue, what is your thinking about where the age line should be drawn on juveniles committing such crimes?
RAVE: I found a healthy new pastime - posting on WorldMagBlog
RANT: I found a healthy new addiction - posting on WorldMagBlog
#12: what is your thinking about where the age line should be drawn on juveniles
And there you have a good topic for discussion. I once saw in the Chicago Tribune two articles side by side. One said, “Two seventeen year old men raped a 22 year old college student”. The other said, “A seventeen year old boy was sexually molested by a male neighbor”.
So, when they rape, they are men, but when they have sex with an older man, they are children who are being assaulted and taken advantage of.
So, yes, it certainly looks like a topic of discussion.
This is not a rant - more of a lament.
Why do crises exist in multiples?
1) Septic system has a clog that backed up while my brother and his family were here. I had to have it pumped, and now need to have repairs done on the fields - it won’t be cheap!
2) The shingles on the roof have lost all the gravel, and we had it replaced yesterday to the tune of $5k. I’m not happy with the finish and fit of the work they did on the soffit and facer boards either.. It’s going to have to be redone. (1/4 gap on a miter joint! I can here it now… “just caulk it, it looks good from my house”.) GRRRR.
3) Within a week of each other, two computers at work decided to blue-screen after their hard drives failed… I wonder which one is next? Auugghhh! This makes the next thing even more stressful:
4) I have a set of cabinets I designed being installed yesterday and today.
5) I have a family crisis - details I won’t get into, but suffice it to say I’m very distressed and depressed over it, and there’s nothing I can do but pray about the situation.
6) A relative with a “history” has recently gotten out of jail and moved back in with his parents who need to be in assisted living instead of taking care of a 40 year old vagrant, “recovering” drug addict, bipolar, ex marine….
Had enough yet? I have…. I went out to the shop last night and:
Rave!

1) I spent four hours in the shop in “therapy”. Yay! Had a good time, and it was actually productive. Made a nice bowl… I love woodturning!
2) My customers love their cabinets! The headaches have been worth the trouble and time! I love it when a plan comes together!
Rant: when World has so many posts a current day’s Whirled Views gets moved off the first page of posts.
Rant: receiving word at 8:30 last night that a brother and family are going to be in town at lunchtime.
Rave: Once I finish cleaning house, I’ll see one brother and his wife and three of their kids today.
Rave: Laurie is off the ventilator and they’re talking about her going home! Since I thought she was going to die at Stanford hospital, I’m weepy at the goodness of God in answering prayers in a miraculous way!
Rant: A step-grandfather exposed an 11 year old boy to pornography a long time ago and the effects have reverberated ever since in the life of someone I care about. The evil that people do boggles the mind sometime.
Rant: I really don’t have any rants. I spent them on other threads.
Rave: He has washed us with His blood - He has brought us nigh to God. - Life is good and there are too many raves, so that little line from the hymn about sums up how I feel.
I can’t believe how late I am today! Anyway…
Rave: For the last eight weeks, our adorable grandson has peered out at the world with a worried expression on his face. You could read it in his eyes, “Will I ever see my Grammy again?”
This week he began to smile!
Because next week we get to see him!
Jane H - I am truly sorry about your situation with a Lutheran school. Our boyz went all the way through the Lutheran system and we and they considered it a wonderful experience (not that there weren’t some bumps along the way). As a Lutheran, myself, please accept my apology. If there’s any way you can see fit to “come” back, please do. I know there are pro’s and con’s to all types of schooling, but in my mind, you just cannot beat a Christian education.
RDEAN,
I’m with you on the rave for out troops in Iraq - doubly so.
RANT - the fact the democrats in congress once again today, for the 52nd time are doing their best to undercut our troops in Iraq, undermine their mission there in the holding back funding support when the surge is a huge success by once again putting on a time limit for their return home. Sadly these Democrats are working for the other side again and want to kill our troops. It’s like they can’t have our Champions succeed at all costs. It’s the only explanation. Watch what they do not what they say.
Rave: The medication my wife got put on for chronic pain is still working well after 10 days.
Rant: The insurance company won’t pay for it and I’ll run out of money in to pay for it in about 3 months.
I’ll bet George, Hillary, Mitt, Johns and the others don’t have to worry about that.
Metanoia,
Be sure to speak to her physician about the non-coverage of her Rx. Some drug companies have a program to give away medicine in certain situations.
I hope you are appealing the denial of the coverage. Don’t take “no” as the final answer. All insurance companies have an appeal process. Even if they told you it’s considered “off label” or “experimental”, don’t accept it as the final word. Tell them you want to use their appeal process. Fight em!
Rave: My younger son did not get all upset when he discovered he had forgotten his lunch this morning. (He hadn’t been ready when the bus came, so I kind of pushed him out the door without giving him a chance to make sure he had everything. So I felt it was my fault as much as his and I drove to the school to drop it off.) The gym teacher was on hall duty, and told me that my son had handled it pretty well (in contrast to how he used to handle such situations by dissolving in tears and being sure the entire day was ruined).
Rave: We now have a shower head in our bathtub. I mentioned last week that I couldn’t get the handle off a faucet to replace a washer. Someone suggested Lime-Away, but that didn’t do it. Someone else suggested WD40,but before I had a chance to try it, the hook holding our flexible shower head (which was attached to the faucet down below) fell off, along with the rack holding all the shampoo, soap, etc. So my husband insisted we call the plumber. (I admit I felt rather glad to hear the plumber had a real bad time getting the faucet handle off, though he was able to fix it finally.) And now we have a real shower head that can be adjusted to make the water go in the direction you want, rather than off to the left or right or too low (as the shortest person in the family other than the 8-year-old, I hadn’t realized how that had been a problem previously).
Rave! For getting to cook a lot next week. The kitchen is my therapy, akin to Meaner’s woodworking.
Rave! That I get to see my girlfriend on Tuesday
Rant! For long distance relationships. ‘Nuff said.
Rave! For soccer, the Dynamo, and Houston’s only decent sports team.
Oh yeah, how could I forget:
Rave! I’m an uncle for the first time, as of Tuesday!
Hi Pam W! Always happy to hear from a fellow addict.
(Of course, I work here, so I probably don’t count.)
(OTOH, I’m actually OFF today but am still here…so what does that tell you!?)
Rant!
I repudiate, rebuke, renounce, and revile Random’s planned sabbatical.
>:-P
;-( Rant! to cold weather. I need to move to Key West real soon
RobHays,
Aren’t the Rockets much better than decent?
Thank you, Lynn.
Here’s the deal. As you don’t have enough stuff to read already, now you will have to sneak over and read my blog, surreptitiously. (If you use an assumed name, I won’t tell.)
I appreciate the attention. In keeping with another thread on today’s collection of blog fests, I will confess to being an attention ha ha. That goes with Christmas also, now that I think of it.
Rave!
This was the first year our church had done Operation Christmas Child and we collected sixteen boxes. Pretty impressive for a congregation of 35-40 people.
May each of those boxes reach a child, may each child hear the Word of the Lord, may the Holy Spirit work in each child to His glory.
Cameron - I was so encouraged to read your #34 post! I bet you all really enjoyed doing them didn’t you?
And a hearty “Amen!” to your prayer!
Rant: Oral surgery on Monday. Still suffering a bit on Friday. I don’t advise waiting until middle age before getting your wisdom teeth out.
Rave: My wife has been absolutely super throughout my dental ordeal. I am doing better. My jaws don’t hurt as much but my gums are still pretty sore.
Rave: I feel at least good enough to attend a play, “The Importance of Being Ernest,” tonight by a local high school. I’m not sure I’ll be able to eat the spaghetti that will be served, though.
Pauline – “I mentioned last week that I couldn’t get the handle off a faucet to replace a washer.”
Tip: Now, while you can still remove the handle, take it off and coat the “toothed” part of the faucet stem (that fits into the handle) with some automotive axle/wheel bearing grease, bicycle gear grease or other heavy industrial grease and replace the handle. (Kitchen grease won’t work as it goes bad and I haven’t tried Vaseline – it may not be heavy enough to last.) You want something waterproof and thick enough to stay where you put it. It doesn’t take much, just enough to coat the spline (toothed part) and keep water out, which dries and leaves behind the lime, and which builds up causing the removal problem.
#22: Sadly these Democrats are working for the other side again and want to kill our troops. It’s like they can’t have our Champions succeed at all costs. It’s the only explanation. Watch what they do not what they say.
My rave is that in spite of everything, the soldiers are trying the best that they can do. Any success in Iraq is due to them in spite of what Bush and his cronies have done.
My Rant is that the Democrats didn’t stand up to Bush when he fabricated the reasons for going to Iraq. They should have MADE HIM go after Bin Laden. Our Democrats are wimps, our Republicans are morons. Our government is broken.
My other rant is that this administration has been so inept. Example: for me to lose a $20 bill is nearly impossible. I can’t remember ever losing $20. How many of YOU have lost a $20 bill? I bet only a very few. Bush lost 11 BILLION!!!! How can that be? How is that possible? How come the Republicans aren’t howling over that?
Rave! Met with the best man from our wedding for a day in Chicago.
Rant! Said good-bye to the best man from our wedding who leaves Chicago for Alberta
Rave: My son prays regularly for his classmates, and lately has been praying for the group he’s in doing a class project on the Inuit people.
Rant: His school only gets 80% of the funding that the other schools in the district get and the school board made a decision that’s making it harder to get by with the budget they have.
Rant: The Ducks are out of the BCS title race.
Rave: The worship team at my church wants me to start playing regularly with them.
See how I made a “Rant & Rave Oreo sandwich”?
I’ve heard that’s what you should do whenever you present bad news or criticism.
Excellent TRR! I’ve always said that we want more “Raves!” than “Rants!”. At a minimum we want a 1:1 ratio. But an “oreo” is much preferred
Rave: Welcome aboard Pam_W. A bit of advice. A certain amount of self discipline is advised. I know.
Lynn: You may repudiate, rebuke and renounce RN’s decision. But you can’t revile it.
Besides, Rondom secretely likes you and Victoria, and (others I started to mention, but decided not to name so many names. He mentioned Vic on another thread.).
Not only that, he will lurk around the blog and someone will pull his chain, and HE’S BACK!
Rond: Also a bit of advice. Exercise the cut-off valves under the faucets, toilet, and other places occasionally. I do it once a year. Otherwise, when you try to turn the water off to work on a faucet or toilet valve, they are stuck and won’t completely close.
Rave - I was asked to be a part of the new leadership team for our church’s Women’s Ministries.
Rant - Too much cleaning left to do before Thanksgiving.
Rave - My hubby bought me a dishwasher, that will be hooked up in time for Thanksgiving dishes!
Rave! I found a hummingbird nest today! Simply beautiful. I had never seen one before.
Rant! I realize now that this blog is one of those right wing outlets that pretends there is an attack on Christmas to encourage division among us.
