Morning!

Today’s quote is from a political theorist and philosopher: “People will not look forward to posterity, who never look backwards to their ancestors.”

Thanks, I’m using that technique to do this. I used it on the first comment about Miley Cyrus, but forgot on the school lunch program. Actually, I didn’t think I was going to say as much as I did.
VS, your suggestion is just confusing me. I’m not that computer literate.
Joe-T-(something) has an interesting post about the $6 gas. However, it’s on yesterday’s thread and will likely not get much attention. It’s worth bringing over.

This “Word to Blog” technique presents an interesting option. That is, I can create a section in “Word” and keep all my comments. I’m trying this here. Entered in my document and highlight for posting only the selected section. I also have a spell check.
(I had to add “blog” to my dictionary.)
    the :-) , I added later.

I used to work with a middle manager who every time he messed up (which was often) the entire department would get a lecture on covering each others backs then they would promote him to a hopefully more harmless position. We began to wonder if he had some incriminating photos of the boss. More likely the boos just didn’t want to admit he made a mistake in hiring him. He finally quit to work in a hospital. We hope he hasn’t killed anyone.

  7. Chas, just remember that when you ask those questions, there are several of us out here who are also learning with you. So, thanks for the questions.

My husband used to have something he called a “kiss of death’ phrase. It is a seemly harmless phrase that when uttered just before a task will spell doom and disaster. Some of these include things. “This should be easy.”, “I doubt this will take more than a few minutes.” and the most forbidden of all “What can go wrong?” But the most frightening kiss of death phrase of all when this aforementioned middle manager (I’ll called him Gerry) worked there was; “Don’t worry. Gerry will have everything set up for you when you get to the site.” This was code for, get there early and bring your own crew, equipment, food and water, a first aid kit and maybe a couple of legal forms.

  9. Chas- Another suggestion is to download Firefox to your computer. I have never been logged out since getting it.

  10. I have mentioned that I have a sister with cancer. She has been in hospice care at home for four months. Yesterday she went to a hospice room in the hospital, and it looks like she is in her last few days of life in this world. Pray for me.

Peter L, It isn’t enough to tell me to download Firefox. I don’t even know what it is, why I want it, nor how to get it. Maybe I could google it.

KBells, during the last few years of my career, I worked in R&D, doing configuration management for a new system (which is up and running well, so I understand). I had a lot of responsibility, but no authority. So, when I needed something done, which was almost always, I had to convince a division chief that it was to his advantage to give me some people and equipment. That was often the hardest part of my job. As I tell my son (the chemical engineer), technical problems are easy, personnel problems are often intractible.

Kyle A, I will pray for you.

    Praying, Kyle.

  16. Sorry Chas - I’m not computer literate either and is why I suggested what, to me, is a much simpler method - but whatever works for you is great.

  17. 17. Gravatar by kBells 04.29.08 at 10:19 am

Kyle, I am so sorry. I lost a sister a few years ago. If anything good came out of it my brothers and I appreciate each other a lot more now.

Chas, when I left my last job I still liked doing it, I just didn’t like what I had to go through to get to do it.

As an engineer my husband least favorite kiss of death phrase is; “Hey this looks like a good project to try out this new equipment on.”

  18. Kyle - You and your family have been and will continue in my prayers as well.

Kyle, you and your family are in my prayers. I know there is a part of you that wants to hold her back and keep her with you even though you know God is calling her home. This is normal, and it hurts. If we could take this pain from you, we would.

  23. Chas, go to mozilla.com and click on the link that says download Firefox free. Follow the instructions. You will be given the option to import all your favorites and settings from IExplorer. That simply copies them to the approroiate place in Firefox.

  24. Speaking of web browsers, have any of you downloaded and used Opera? Some things about it were pretty cool, but I still like Firefox better.

  25. Chas,
When you get on to the internet, you’re probably using Internet Explorer–it came with your computer, most likely, and is very common. The icon is the lower-case e with a swirl around it. It’s called a browser, and it’s what lets you move around from site to site on the web. However, it has a few problems, which are slightly technical.

There are a few other options out there, and Mozilla/Firefox is a good one. It is much more stable, has a built-in spell check, updates itself, keeps your favorite pages more accessible, etc.

  26. Cameron,

So can you simply install Firefox and it will take over? That’s very relevant to me, because I actually cannot get on the Internet clicking on Internet Explorer; mine seems to be “broken.” (It gives error messages when I try to get into it, even if it’s a techie telling me what to do.) I have Juno–am paying for DSL but only have dial-up–and can’t get online except by coming through Juno. Could I download Firefox and improve my service, or do you know?

    Kyle A., praying for you.

  27. Cheryl, by all means try Firefox. Internet Exploder is a worthless piece of junk, imho. I have no idea why you have to go through Juno, and I wouldn’t know if FF itself will solve your problems, but it’s definitely worth a try.

I’m another Firefox fan, it’s the easiest browser I’ve ever used. The tab feature makes it easy to move from site to site without wandering too far away from where you started. For instance, if someone commenting here includes a link, you can right click on it, choose “open in a new tab,” and go to it without losing your place on WOW, even if that link leads you to another and another. True, I’ve been known to wander so far afield that I forgot where I started, but that’s just me.

Foxfire can even memorize passwords so you don’t have to type them in every time. It also keeps me logged in on WOW and other blog sites even when I leave the site, unless I deliberately log out.

For those of you considering changing to Firefox, I recommend, DO IT. Then, when you get there, go to Tools, options & play around. You can’t hurt anything & you can make some changes you might like [like font size, pop up blocker, home page, etc].

Cheryl D. I’m far from a computer whiz, but saying that you’re paying for DSL, but only have dial up sounds more like a problem with your service company than a browser problem, have you contacted them?

The cayenne pepper didn’t keep the rabbit out of my plant barrel, so I went to a garden center yesterday for ideas. They had something called a gopher basket, which is made to open up and go around a plant to protect it in the ground. It’s made of small chicken wire with aluminum bars to keep it upright. I bought 6 of the smallest size, kept them flat, and installed them as 12″ high fences around my daisies. So far, it looks like that did the trick.

Speaking of Internet Exploder, what’s the experience here with Vista? I heard on the radio this morning that Microsoft is planning to discontinue XP entirely and go Vista-only until its successor is released in (gulp) 2010 (or so).

Is it time to go back to Mac?

  33. Stubob, I haven’t had any problems with Vista since I’ve gotten it (hope that’s not a jinx!). Of course, it was a brand new computer (the one I’m using now, in fact) that was installed with the premium version of Vista (instead of the basic version). My understanding is most of the problems are from upgrades of XP to Vista.

  34. 34. Gravatar by michelle 04.29.08 at 2:33 pm

My husband, Mr PC Lover, is thinking Mac next time because of Vista. The IT guys at his large company are not allowed to load Vista because it’s such a memory hog. According to him, you need to spend the first three hours taking all the ads for “free” software off the system before you can even begin.

It’s twisting us up at work, as well; we’ve had problems reading Microsoft Word attachments from folks with Vista operating systems.

    I’m praying Kyle.

    God bless and comfort you.

To those of you who are at least slightly technical, there are also some neat FF “add on’s” that you can find if you google for them. I like the one that allows me to rename my tabs (when I’m logged into multiple sites).

It’s snowing. Took two of the puppies to the vet this morning, they found a porcupine last night. One is 83 pounds and the other is one hundred eight, no wonder I have a hard time lifting him into the car. Their mom left the porky alone, she learned last year. The rat terrier stays near the house at night so he hasn’t learned, hope he never has to.

  38. Michelle, isn’t that Word problem more of a Word 2007 issue? The files are now .docx rather than the old .doc file. I am using Vista but have an older version of Word (2001 I think) installed and have no problems sending attachments to others w/o Vista.

I’ll jump in on the firefox bandwagon. I use FF exclusively at home, at work, we have to use IE.. ugh.

Also, I prefer their e-mail client, Thunderbird, over Outlook.

FF and Thunderbird both have multiple add-ons that are often useful, or sometimes just fun - like the ability to download and switch between different themes, or one that “Borks” your junk-mail so that it reads like the Swedish Chef sent it!

My new laptop has Vista & I’m not thrilled about a couple of things. I needed to order new software in order to use the scan feature on my HP all-in-one printer that’s only a couple of years old.

The oddest thing was that, frequently, when I tapped on the touchpad, the window would minimize, no matter where the pointer was. This can be infuriating, to say the least. Especially when it happens over and over. I just now found a place in “Mouse Properties” which may be the cause. Time will tell.

Vista uses a program called “Windows Mail” in place of Outlook. It seems pretty much the same, except my inbox lists mail coming to any of my addresses at the same time, instead of having to switch between inboxes for each address.

Thomas: Not being a Microsoft fan, I would like to hear what you prefer about Thunderbird.

My wife got a new laptop with Vista for her birthday in Feb. She has had no problems with it and now my daughter is stealing it because she likes it better than her computer with XP.

It does take some memory, my wife has 1 meg instead of the supposed optimal 2 megs suggested by some IT folks, but memory is cheap.

  42. Kayvee,
I’ve had the same problem with our touchpad on our Vista laptop–glad to know it wasn’t just me. TJ did something to fix it, but I don’t know exactly what.

    Cheryl D,
Yes, Firefox can just take over as your new browser. Your dialup/DSL problem is most likely your provider’s problem, though, not IE, as someone said above.

I’ve had this Mac for a year and had no problems.

    This mws on AOL news

WESTON, Wis. (April 29) - Two parents who prayed as their 11-year-old daughter died of untreated diabetes were charged Monday with second-degree reckless homicide.

Family and friends had urged Dale and Leilani Neumann to get help for their daughter, but the father considered the illness “a test of faith” and the mother never considered taking the girl to the doctor because she thought her daughter was under a “spiritual attack,” the criminal complaint said.

These parents, if you want to call them that, could get 25 years for the insane death of their poor child. It is not enough.

  45. My dial-up problem actually (I think) is because I haven’t had a tech geek in. I installed the stuff Juno sent to convert to DSL, and after lots of time trying to get it to work, I finally called Juno. They did a remote check and told me I was missing something I needed to buy. So I bought it, and installed it, and needed another part. So I bought it and installed it. By that time my tech knowledge had come to an end. My problem (I think) is that at this point I have something plugged in wrong. But I tried a bunch of configurations with my 14 plugs and finally decided I was likely to ruin my DSL connection if I did anymore, and I needed someone who knew what he was doing to plug and unplug things and get me up and running. (Part of the problem is that my phone and my computer both go through a high-tech surge protector, and so the instructions on plugging things in simply didn’t work.)

Meanwhile, it took so long even to get to that point, that my main “urgency” in going to DSL (that I cannot load the program that creates my websites on my dial-up connection) had been dealt with, because I worked on the library computers so many times that I created three websites there! I still want DSL, especially since I’m paying for it…but my computer is my workplace, and I’m half afraid of letting someone else touch it, lest I hurt what is actually working (if not working the way I want it).

  46. 46. Gravatar by KayVee 04.29.08 at 6:06 pm

I believe what I found in “Mouse Properties” has solved the problem. If anyone else has run into this [it seems to have been a default setting from the factory], it’s:

    Control Panel
    Mouse Properties
    Device Settings
    Settings
    Tapping
    Tap Zones

Whew, no wonder it took me so long to find it :-)

In “Tap Zones” you can choose how you want each corner of the tapping surface to act from a large selection of options, or to not do anything special at all. You can also make those corner surfaces larger or smaller. Both my left and right lower corners were set to minimize, another was set to open the start window, and they all were too large. Now my lower ones are set to scroll up or down and my upper ones open my default browser and mail [I also found how to select which mail and which browser for my defaults].

My question is: Why do computer manufacturers think that everyone who buys a computer is an expert and has no need of any manual-type information beyond a diagram of the outside connectors?

  47. 47. Gravatar by KayVee 04.29.08 at 6:09 pm

Cheryl D: Know any 13 year old boys? Most of them know more about computers than you or I ever will. ;-)

  48. Kayvee, we have an icon in the Windows tray on our laptop for the pointing device feature (i.e., laptop mouse). If you right click on that icon, a menu box appears. The last item on the menu is “Tap to Click”. If you have something similar, it probably has a check mark next to it. Click on it to remove the check mark and you shouldn’t have any of the annoying minimizing/inadvertent clicking problems.

Our laptop is a Toshiba, so you might have a different icon/controller, but somewhere you probably have a similar menu command.

  49. 49. Gravatar by KayVee 04.30.08 at 10:18 am

    Hi TJ,

I also have a Toshiba, but when I remove the check mark I can no longer use the tapping surface at all. No problem, though, the steps I did in #46 seems to have solved the problem.

    Thanks for your help.
