Gravatar  66 Comments

Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:

 1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.

2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.

3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.

Have fun!

  1. I took my firstborn to college this week. The emphasis was on being equipped to live a Christian life through making lifelong solid friendships/mentors. He went on a camping trip with 140 students and quite a few faculty members. 2 credit hours. Great message/experience.

:-) Three days until school starts.

:-) I met my son’s teacher last night and like her very much, though she was as young, and blond and perky as I expect from someone with a name ending in “i”.

:-) One of his best friends and best influences from church is in his class.

:-( No rants today and I get paranoid when things go too well.

  3. :-) The Simpsonville Little League girls won the world series in Portland, Or. Who is this Phelps guy? They’re proud of the girls in Simpsonville.
Simpsonville is a SE suburb of Greenville, SC.
I think they beat Robbinsville, NJ 9-5.

:-) I got half-inch of rain this week. But:
 we’re in drouth and under water restrictions. Half-inch is not nearly enough.

 I’m 77.9952 years old as of this moment.

Angus Mckenzie of Motor Trend fame is NUTS. He says the new Rolls Royce Phantom is elegant.

Yep. Sure Angus. Like a MACK truck is elegant. I know it’s the new style, but y’know what? That boxy chopped front that’s the new style is butt ugly. OK? So quit lying about it.

  9. Don’t rush me guys! I won’t be 78 till Sunday.
But I already look 78.0766. The worst part will be getting sung to in SS.

:-) Driving into work this morning there was a guy in front of me in a black pickup going very slow. I noticed that the entire bed of his truck was full of the biggest, red tomatoes I have seen in one place in some time. I tried to pull next to the guy to ask him where he was going so I could buy some but sadly, he must of thought I was a road rage case, looked scared and he wouldn’t roll down his window. All I know is that he was heading east on the 64 at the 288 in Short Pump. I almost cried.

  15. Homegrown tomatoes are soft and hard to cut, they are wet and make the sandwich bread soggy.
    HOMEGROWN TOMATOES ARE DELICIOUS.!
I’ve been getting them about three weeks now.

Re, #9. Last Sunday our pastor, commenting on James’ “beholding himself in a mirror ….” said, “the mirror doesn’t lie.”
I saw him at the “Y” (gym) Wednesday and said that the older I get the more my mirror lies. I can’t really look that bad. But even so, there’s nothing worse than lying scales.

  16. Michelle, where do you live? Someone gave us gigantic tomatoes and green peppers from their garden last week. I made spaghetti using them last evening. It was yummy, imho.

I guess that counts as a rave. :)

  17. Chas, I just read in 1930 that scientists discovered the planet Pluto. I believe it was 2006 when they decided Pluto wasn’t really a planet. I’d call that an eventful life.

  20. Happy birthday, Chas! I once read of a man who made his wife’s day by sending her flowers at work, the day after her 39th birthday, withe the note “You don’t look a day over 39.” When my mom turned 75, the flower service through which I ordered flowers didn’t deliver on Monday, so I borrowed that line…I had her husband buy her three roses on Monday (her birthday) and then Tuesday she got six dozen roses to bring the total to 75, with a card saying, “You don’t look a day over 75.” She was absolutely blown away by the 75 roses. OK, back to rants and raves . . .

We’re an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge; last year I didn’t get a garden tomato until mid-September. So, I’m dancing in the kitchen today–because now I’ve got another one! :-)

:-( But I also have a, literally, two-foot long zucchini. (Kids forgot to pick it). I’m very sorry about the people starving in Dafur, but I’m going to compost it. Even I can’t fool my family that much by smothering it with sausage stuffing!

:-) My family loves grilled zucchini . . . thanks for the recipe!

:-) Another year of Chas’ wisdom. What are you reading now? I don’t have many books left on my reserve list at the library.

  22. :) I slept better last night than I have in months. Went to bed about 1:00, slept more or less straight through, and woke up at nearly 10:00!

:) Yesterday I used a coupon from Petsmart for a free “bath and brush and more” (they also clipped her nails and cleaned her ears). When I got the coupon, I said, “Do they know I have a collie?” She takes a lot of water and a lot of time to bathe, and three or more hours just to dry, even if I start the drying with a towel and a hair dryer. (Fortunately she also sheds dirt–she hadn’t been bathed since February and still looked and smelled clean except that her feet weren’t as sparkling white as the rest of her white fur still was.) Anyway, that was a fun blessing to have someone else do it.

:) I finished a book proposal that has been hanging over my head and got completely caught up on a couple of other things.

:) Some good visiting time with friends this week. Last week was a lonely, depressing week (the loved one fighting cancer was very heavy on my heart and I wasn’t feeling well), and I needed that.

:) People on this blog, esp. Chas, who helped me with some “period memories” as I was editing a period novel this week and needed to verify/correct a few things.

CherylD (my friend): I chuckled when I read, “Yesterday I used a coupon from Petsmart for a free ‘bath and brush and more’.” It reminded me of a time that a co-worker started a story by saying, “Last night I took my son to the dry cleaner” to which I replied, “Is that better than a bath?”

  28. :) A GORGEOUS weekend on tap in our area - perfect for our first (and probably only) camping trip of the summer. My son is very excited - and I could certainly use the relaxation that comes with sitting around a campfire, hiking and checking out the amazing world we live in.

:) :( My son starts Kindergarten in 3 weeks. He’s thrilled, but a little nervous I think. I know he will do great, but our lives are going to get even crazier than they already are.

:) He will be attending a private Christian school. Money will be tight, but I feel it’s worth it -

:( Husband goes back to “school” in 2 weeks, which means my world gets crazier and more hectic. It also means that daughter heads back to daycare after a summer with daddy. She is a daddy’s girl right now, and I don’t think she’s going to look kindly on not seeing him every morning when she wakes up.

:( Work frustrations. I am currently the only employee, and the only one trying to make major changes to the company. We need to do something! Someday, I hope to work for myself, but financially, it seems impossible now.

:( The news that VS has been taken due to breast cancer. I just heard this yesterday for the first time. She always had lots to add to our discussions. It’s sad for her family, that she was taken so young, but how wonderful to be where she is now!

:) God is in control, and everything works out for good - I just need to keep remembering that!

  29. One more rant: :( My Bible study is done in 1 week. It has been such a blessing this summer! The women I meet with are going to do another one this fall, but I won’t be able to attend - husband works the evening they are holding it.

    Kayvee,

I almost had a heart attack when I started to do some research on M. Phelps’ dad and saw his name was Fred Phelps. I though he might be a son of the nut case Fred Phelps, the insane Baptist pastor from Topeka that pickets the funerals of Iraq war deaths among other insane things too numerous to mention.

But thankfully, he is not related to that insane family but he was a policeman of some kind. The insane Pastor Phelps is a disbarred lawyer who had 13 kids, - 11 of them are lawyers. What a nightmare they are. Can’t find out much else about Michael’s dad though.

Michael’s sisters and mother are just great no matter how bad his dad was. It is nice to see him and his family, do so well despite all the hardships.

:-) Glad that Obama finally realized that Putin wasn’t invading Atlanta and he wouldn’t have to come back from his Hawaiian vacation early to surrender Georgia to the Russians.

You got to love it. Another great week for McCain and the third week in a row of heartbreak for the Anti Christ. Then at the very end Hillary rolled him with a lead pipe. If this keeps up there will be riots on the convention floor in Denver and Hillary will likely win the Socialist / Marxist nomination. He is such a naive, weak and inexperienced boy.

Next thing you know Janet Reno will have him changing her oil in her little red truck.

  42. :-( RANT: Phelps dad has no character

:-( RANT: McCain did the same thing Mr. Phelps did, except he divorced his wife in April of 1980 and married the rich girl in May of 2008. Speaks volumes about how he sees marriage and commitment.

  43. :-( RANT: Nancy Pelosi has a new book out. What could she possibly have to say that anyone would want to read?

 RAVE: She is being met by protesters everywhere she goes! They want to know why she has not fulfilled her duty to impeach the criminals, Bush and Cheney!

  44. :-) RAVE! John McSame said: “In the 21st century, nations don’t invade other nations.”

  54. The last line above should have a :) before it.

  55. :-) RAVE! I agree with Cheryl! The Georgian soldiers shooting at Americans is probably endless, very pointless, and certainly mindless! Yay for Cheryl!

:-( RANT! This week we learned John McCain has a lobbyist on his campaign who made hundreds of thousands of dollars pimping Georgia. He has another one that pimped for the Myanmar Regime. Just say NO to John “Huggie Bear” McSame!

:-) RAVE! We can do better than John McCain!

  56. :) Soccer is a good sport and keeps me in shape.
:)Our Olympic team (Team USA) seems to be doing quite well in some events. The Dalhausser/Rogers men’s volleyball team, for instance, and of course Michael Phelps, who must be (as the commercial said) at least part dolphin. Hooray for the USA.

MIM, yes I think the Phantom Coupe could look a lot better, but there are a lot worse looking things on four wheels out there. (i.e. Pontiac Aztek, etc.)

OT, I don’t know what the worst book ever written is, but one of the worst I’ve read was Vanity Fair by Thackeray. I forced myself through the hundreds and hundreds of pages, but it really is not my kind of reading.

  57. :) Some people think we should have birthweeks instead of only birthdays, Chas. Take advantage.

Rant: I don’t know how to put a smiley face here, could someone please take the time to tell me how?

Rave: The clutch went out on my husband’s semi on an interstate. Road Service truck repairers often rip-off the truckers because they have to be towed and repaired immediately. They have to pay whatever they charge. My husband prayed for God to send an honest man to fix it.

Immediately a Russian truck driver pulled up and helped him fix it enough to get to a truck stop. There he offered to fix it properly for free. My husband offered $100 anyway, for his time. The man had his son go and buy the necessary washer and was able to fix it completely. Then he invited my husband to his nearby house, where his wife fed him a lavish meal and filled a bag with homemade bread and desserts to take with him. The man’s sons played Russian hymns on piano and accordian. They all had a wonderful time of fellowship. My husband left with an open offer for a meal anytime he’s back in that area.
