Meditation 10.27
On Saturdays we consider a passage of Scripture. This is not a thread for theological debate, but for reflection, for looking for truth in an ancient text. Here’s today’s passage:
Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.
For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.
For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

I’ve been blessed by a similar passage in Colossians:
Col. 2:6-7 (ESV) Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
A fine Christian musician, Nathan Clark George, has recorded the Colossians text - great song.
Both texts remind us of God’s call and God’s grace.
…”that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter,”
Interesting. We often hear how sexual sins “don’t hurt anybody else”–unless this only refers to adultery?
In the spiritual realm, our sins, even secret ones, do have an effect on our church families.
Karen O - I’d take that further, they have wider affect than just the church family (it is just harder to see).
KRM - Definitely.
Just checking in to say that I have been meditating on this passage, and it seems straightforward.
It dovetailed with my OT reading in Jeremiah today.
I think this passage becomes easier as we age. But, we are wise to remember that sexual sins aren’t as harmless as we’ve all been encultured to believe they are.
Perhaps this is a good time to say, “Marry, lest ye burn in lust.”
