The right stuff

This week, Marvin Olasky uses his column to honor the work ethic of longtime WORLD religion reporter Ed Plowman.

Our oldest reporter, Ed Plowman, emailed me earlier this year that he was scheduled to have heart surgery in six days: “This surgery requires deflation of and folding aside the right lung, burning and scarring of heart wall tissue while avoiding all blood vessels around and in the heart, cutting open the pericardium, and extracting a structure in the heart known as the Left Atrial Appendage, where most emboli [clots] in the heart form, all while the heart is beating.”

He then apologized: “I’m afraid my time for WORLD monitoring and reporting from today on is going to be very squeezed. So much to do, so many preps, and this Monday will be spent in pre-ops at the hospital. But let me know if you need something in the next few days. I hope I can be back at the computer within two weeks or less following surgery, though they told me to expect ‘discomfort’ for eight weeks.”

This isn’t the first or fifth time Ed’s sent WORLD editors a note like this. But he has always treated his own health problems — even open heart surgery — as a minor nuisance, all the while taking close care of his wife who has been very ill for years. Such commitment is rare these days — and heroic. Do you have any Ed Plowmans in your life?

Yes. My Father-in-law, Dennis. He takes care of Elaine, my Mother-in-law, who has Alzheimer’s and Macular Degeneritis, while treating himself for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. There have been some struggles in the years since his diagnosis, but they are still in their home, and he is still quite active for an 83-yr old.

  2. The men in my fanily were old combat veterans. This was the norm for them - and they considered it unremarkable.

Those of us who have developed some of their attidues seem to baffle a lot of people now.
