Good morning!

Today’s quote is from a poet: “That best portion of a good man’s life, his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.”

“That best portion of a good man’s life, his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.”

    T.S Elliot

A short word — seems appropriate for the quote — for all your words of condolence yesterday. It was so uplifting to finally read them at the end of the day.

A death like this hours before church threw everything in a loop. Gasps at the beginning, hugs tears — blessedly, the minister was able to adjust; and our music leader changed songs on the fly. Later, my wife and I worked off grief a little with a lasagne supper for the family and grandparents.

Karen modeled so much of what Eliot said.

    Thanks, all.

Once again, with the murder of the young pregnant USMC rape victim (by the alleged rapist no less?) we see sin’s full-blown grip over humanity. I am still reeling from the news of the man who threw his own kids off the Alabama bridge.

On a different note, Political Mavens asks: Since drugs are so common a part of life in the USA, should we be entitled to know which pills our politicians are poppin’? [Okay not in those exact words]
I have mixed feelings. In Texas when Bush was Governor the man who effectively “ran the state” (as a recent biog of him puts it) was Bob Bullock. Bob was an old style what’s-best-for-the-people-of-Texas Democrat the likes of which we might not ever see again. Some folks now speak ill of him because it was Bullock who nudged W to run for Prez. That lent a false air of bipartisanship to George W Bush
But anyway.. Bullock was a chain-smoking workaholic and an alcoholic. He was also evidently a sufferer of manic depression. He burned through several wives. But his knowledge of state govt’s ins and outs was legendary. Loved by few yet feared/respected by all.

I’m just concluding now that this man with all his health concerns (not to mention the multimarriages) would never ascend to so important& powerful an office today. For years the Texas Lt Gov job was vastly misunderstood (misunderestimated) but in fact whoever holds it really does “run the state”

I think if the politicians on their own choose to open up their medicine cabinet, release their tax returns etc that is great. But I also wonder if I’d be inclined to let a prozac taker have a finger anywhere near the launch’em button.

Lynn Vincent, you wrote a splendid article in the worldmag. But you need to review the states’ placemt in the Southwest. (I wish Texas was that close to Phoenix!)

Bush Justice Dept. files amicus brief supporting DC Gun Ban

The Department of Justice has filed an amicus brief on behalf the District of Columbia. Yes, you read that right. The Bush Administration is supporting DC in the upcoming case on that will have a major impact on gun owner’s rights.

Here is the analysis from David Hardy:

As I read this, the (Bush) Dept of Justice is asking that the Court hold it to be an individual right, but not strike the DC gun law, instead sending it back down to the trial court to take evidence on everything from how much the District needs the law to whether people can defend themselves without pistols and just what the DC trigger lock law means. THEN maybe it can begin another four year trek to the Supremes. That is, the DoJ REJECTS the DC Circuit position that an absolute, flat, ban on handguns violates the Second Amendment, and contends that it might just be justified, it all depends on the evidence.

There was a saying during my years in DC that the GOP operated on two principles: screw your friends and appease your enemies. Yup.

… This is bad news. The lower court decision to overturn the ban was very well written and address the heart of the issue head on:

To summarize, we conclude that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. That right existed prior to the formation of the new government under the Constitution and was premised on the private use of arms for activities such as hunting and self-defense, the latter being understood as resistance to either private lawlessness or the depredations of a tyrannical government (or a threat from abroad). In addition, the right to keep and bear arms had the important and salutary civic purpose of helping to preserve the citizen militia. The civic purpose was also a political expedient for the Federalists in the First Congress as it served, in part, to placate their Antifederalist opponents. The individual right facilitated militia service by ensuring that citizens would not be barred from keeping the arms they would need when called forth for militia duty. Despite the importance of the Second Amendment’s civic purpose, however, the activities it protects are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual’s enjoyment of the right contingent upon his or her continued or intermittent enrollment in the militia.

I don’t see what part of the right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed is so damned hard to understand.

  9. Today on my blog I posted a bit about the case of Ezra Levant in Alberta, Canada. Do you have an opinion about the matter? Do you even know about it?

    http://renaissanceguy.wordpress.com/2008/01/14/weeping-for-canada/

  10. Aww, I remember Bob Bullock. And the phrase “yellow dog Democrat”, or depending on how close to Lufkin you grew up, “yella dawg Democrat”. You’re right, Sawgunner, they don’t make ‘em like him (or Ann Richards or Molly Ivins) any more.

Just out of curiosity, Sawgunner: Texas native or just there because of Ft. Hood?

  11. Happy Birthday to Pauline!

And yesterday was Karen O’s birthday, which I mentioned on the Sat WV thread, but no one else acknowledged it.

So how about some wishes to both Karen O and Pauline! (I guess Kim will have to give them some lessons on how to be recognized!) :-)

  12. Happy birthday to both Karen O and Pauline. I hope your birthdays are wonderful!

Karen O, is it snowing down your way? The Portland area may get as much as 10 inches by the time this storm winds down. Good day for staying put and baking cinnamon-applesauce muffins. :-)

Happy birthdays, Karen O and Pauline! Are you older and more mature?

  16. 16. Gravatar by mumsee 01.14.08 at 11:27 am

Our fourth grader has a scale in her classroom. She says all of her class is on a diet and her teacher is in weight watchers. Is this a common feature in classrooms these days? Fourth grader is, if anything, on the low end of the weight scale for her age. I do understand there is an obesity problem in the US as well as several serious eating disorders.

    Happy birthday, all.

Sawgunner, if it’s not too personal, how has your return to America gone? Any comments on the contrast between Iraq and Tesas?

    Texas

  19. Mumsee, don’t get me started on this. Talk about NOT the schools responsibility. I understand that in Arkansas they send the childs BMI home on the report card.

  20. Mumsee, IMO, no child in fourth grade should be on a diet unless they are severely obese and then they should be under the care of a physician and/or dietitian, with the guradien involved. They surely can be taught to eat in a better way or on the food values and lack thereof in others. That is not being “on a diet”. I was shocked when my daughter came home in first grade and used the term fat to run someone down. Not only did she get a lecture on being kind (which she normally was, even her Kindergarten teacher had remarked on it) but she got a talking to about different body types etc. That was 25 yrs. or so ago. I can’t imagine being an overweight child in today atmosphere.

  21. Sorry, Kim. Didn’t mean to get you started.

  22. Mumsee,
I haven’t heard of dieting in the classroom before. My older son did have a BMI test as part of a phys ed evaluation one year. My younger son (who does need to exercise more and eat more fruits/veggies) has never mentioned anything related to diet at school. (Though when I asked his teacher how much time they spend playing outside, for a health checklist we were doing for Cub Scouts, she also added a note about how healthy his lunch always is.)

I think that a discussion of healthy eating and exercise habits is appropriate as part of elementary science/health class, but not “diet” as in weight loss. And a scale in the classroom could be part of learning measurement units for math.

If the teacher wants to talk about her efforts to get in better health, that’s fine, and I suppose some students would want to emulate her. It would bother me that the whole class would either be required to or feel pressured to do so.

  23. I have no problem w/ the BMI on the report card. Some parents are clueless until they see it in print! As a former teacher, I understand wanting to educate your class on eating right but she needs to leave Weight Watchers out of the classroom along with the scale. These kids need physical exercise and education about the benefits of a healthy diet. Junk food machines should be out of the schools and the whole lunch program overhauled.

  24. Thank you for the birthday wishes.
I’m getting over a cold which I had most of last week, which caused me to lose interest in plans for our virtual party. (I don’t think I would spread any virtual germs, but one doesn’t like to take chances. I wasn’t sure I would be able to smell/taste the virtual food well enough to enjoy it, with my congested sinuses.)

And bringing it up yesterday, when I was starting to feel better, might have seemed insensitive to Harris.

We went to National Treasure: BoS as a family yesterday and enjoyed it. Today I took the day off and my husband and I are heading to Davenport to get our son’s French horn repaired and find a Red Robin restaurant where we can use the gift card someone gave him for Christmas.

  25. Karen O, Pauline,
Happy Birthday to you two precious women!
So glad God has put you all in our midst.
    Love y’all.

I want them to get nutrition information and info on physical activity and eating right (as a backup to what they learn at home) but thought the scale and dieting and WW was a bit excessive. Thanks for the feedback.

  27. When I was in school phys. ed. was a requirement. I think that they should bring that back. Kid’s don’t get outside and play all day like they used to. Instead they get on the tube or video game or internet all day. If you want highly developed hand eye coordination and not much else, perhaps that’s a good thing…

  28. 28. Gravatar by StuBob 01.14.08 at 1:43 pm

Oh, look! My avatar showed up!

  29. (If StuBob is around…)

    Speaking of health issues…

I mentioned this article about deadly bacterial infections yesterday:
    http://www.rd.com/content/methicillin-resistant-staphylococcus-aureus/

I wondered if StuBob were around and what he thought of MRSA? Is the issue being blown out of proportion? Should we immediately quit using anti-biotic everything?

  30. Congrats on the avatar. Is that your airplane?

  31. 31. Gravatar by StuBob 01.14.08 at 1:54 pm

A certain amount of caution is warranted. I’m not sure if it’s over- or appropriately-hyped.

As to quitting antibiotics on an individual basis, that isn’t going to change anything. As a population, however, we use way too many of the things. The MRSA problem is probably related to that. Every day of December and January, someone comes to my office with a cold and wants me to prescribe antibiotics. I almost never do, and they almost always get mad.

On a personal level, the best preventions are 1)wash your hands often and 2) don’t pick your nose.

  32. 32. Gravatar by StuBob 01.14.08 at 1:55 pm

    (30) Half of that is my airplane. It’s a 1946 Cessna 140. Not fast, but very fun.

  33. 33. Gravatar by NJLawyer 01.14.08 at 1:57 pm

The teacher has a problem with her weight and the kids have to go through the Weight Watchers program with her? Why did the principal allow this? These children don’t need that kind of pressure; rather it would be better if the schools had recess and gym class, classes on nutrition — but not a scale. Can you imagine being the kid who is overweight in that class? He/She could be scarred to life.

Frank, I read your post on the Second Amendment, then went over to the Volokh Conspiracy — which I’m sure you will find of interest if you haven’t already read the threads there. (One can get a history lesson in the posts, too, regarding juries and jury nullification.) The more I read posts here in favor of government control of all aspects of our lives, the more I understand why you feel that way you do about the Second Amendment. As one poster noted, one reason the Second Amendment was adopted is so we’ll always be in the position to overthrow the government–one of our rights! Happy reading.

  34. StuBob,

do you mean that this is a picture of half of your airplane, or that the half of the airplane belongs to you?

  35. MiM #34- You remind me of when my dad told us he had a half-brother in Florida (which made him my half-uncle). I always wondered which half of him was related to us. ;)

On nice days, there’s a 50% chance that I’ll get to fly it!

I have a partner in it. He’s a CPA, so he keeps track of the hangar rent and insurance and tells me how much I owe. In the summer, sharing is half as good as total ownership. In the winter, it’s twice as good

  37. So which half do you fly?

  38. What a hypocritical, pathetic, lying weasel Mike Huckabee is. Christians should be ashamed that he’s one of their own, or claims to be. He’s taken to preaching in churces to drum up votes. Oh, he never asks for votes, and he denies that he’s campaigning by preaching, but that’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s showing evvies that he’s one of them, and he really means it. Yesterday he preached at a South Carolina church. He preached that there was only one way to Heaven, and it’s not living a good life. It’s believing in Jesus Christ. Which means, of course, that anyone who doesn’t believe in Jesus Christ doesn’t go to Heaven, such as Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc. After church a reporter asked him the obvious question: if it’s necessary to accept Christ as savior to go to heaven, does that mean that people that don’t accept Christ don’t go to heaven. Huckabee responded that he doesn’t konw, it’s not up to him to make that decision, and hey, let’s keep politics and religion separate. In other words, he doesn’t believe a word of the crap he was laying down in the pulpit an hour before. Sure, he’ll tell Christians what they want to hear, and it’s sort of true while you’re at church that Christ is necessary for salvation, but out in the real world, who can know these things? And what would Jews think if they heard me say they’re going to hell? So let’s talk about nuking Iran.

  39. 39. Gravatar by NJLawyer 01.14.08 at 3:44 pm

I could have sworn I saw Hillary sitting in a church on the news this morning. And last week I saw her speaking from the pulpit, too. Mr. Huckabee, if he preaced the sermon Night Train describes, performed the duties of a minister, not a politician. Learn to separate church and state. And what was Hillary doing behind the pulpit? Oh, that’s right — double standards are okay for the Dems.

  40. PE IS a requirement in our schools.

And at times they go overboard with it. When my niece was in high school and if she missed a gym class (for a legitimate reason) she had to write an essay or do a make-up session in the weight room. However, sometimes, due to her busy schedule with Dance class and playing on the girl’s Varsity Volleyball team (which they wouldn’t count towards her PE requirement)it was a bit ridiculous to find out they took points off her grade.

She was one of the most physically fit and active girls in her class too.

But yes, the “dieting” thing is going too far!

  41. Night Train,
Is Huckabee still an ordained minister? Shall we kick him out of the pulpit or the campaign because he’s either a preacher on campaign, or a campaigner who’s preaching?

Hillary on the other hand, is not even a minister… nor has she ever been one. Who is the hypocrit again?

The last guess I saw on the quote was T.S. Eliot…which I’m sorry to report is incorrect. Keep guessing!

    :-)

  44. Make It Man, I see your reasoning and reading skills are as sharp as ever. Huckabee’s a hypocrite because in the pulpit he boldly proclaims that Christ is the only way of salvation, and when outside the pulpit says he doesn’t know if Christ is the only way of salvation. It’s not real hard to understand.

  45. NT, got a link for the Huckabee post-sermon interview? I’d like to see what he was (quoted as) saying before I comment.

  46. Here’s the story and link, RR.

On Sunday in South Carolina, Huckabee avoided politics entirely, instead preaching about humility and trusting in Jesus to open the gates of heaven.

“The criteria to get into heaven is you have to be not good, but perfect. That’s the real challenge in it,” he said at First Baptist North Spartanburg, a megachurch with 2,500 members.

“On that day, when I pull up, I’ll be asked, `Do you have what it takes to get in?’” Huckabee said. “And if I ask, `Well, what does it take to get in?’ ‘Gotta be perfect.’”

“Well, I’m afraid I don’t have that, but you know what, I won’t be there alone that day. Somebody is going to be with me. His name is Jesus, and he’s promised that he would never leave me or forsake me,” he said.

Asked by reporters later if he thinks only Christians will go to heaven, Huckabee refused to say. He often says that as a minister, he joked that he doesn’t even believe all Baptists are going to heaven.

“I’m going to stick to the things that make it critical for me to be president of the United States,” Huckabee said Sunday. “I have deep convictions about who goes and who doesn’t, but as far as who makes that decision, it isn’t me, it’s God. I’m going to leave that up to him.”

Apparently Huckabee doesn’t believe that Jesus is God, since Jesus said a long, long time ago that no one comes to the Father but through him. But Huck says we have no way of knowing.

    Stubob,

I sent you an email on your regulars address. Please let me know. Thanks.

  48. 48. Gravatar by Justus331 01.14.08 at 5:01 pm

Well, NT, it is true that a person will not go to Heaven if they die without Jesus as their savior. A person goes to Heaven if that person’s name is written in the Lamb’s (Jesus) book of life. My name is there, because on December 25th, 1981, I trusted Jesus as my personal savior. You see, in Heaven, there are NO baptists, presbyterians, catholics, atheists, but only christians! Please refer to John chapter 3 for the details. :)

  49. What kind of “Christian minister” refuses to say if Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven? Talk about always being ready to give an answer for the hope that is within you. Man. Talk about the trumpet putting forth an uncertain sound! Talk about not being ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ! Huckabee is very ashamed of it, except when he’s behind a pulpit pandering for Christian votes by claiming that he believes Christ is the only way of salvation. But outside of the church, with all those Jews and Muslims and secularists who might hear him, suddenly he won’t say if Christ is the only way of salvation, and that decision is up to God. Which is a lie, because it implies that he believes God hasn’t spoken on the matter, while at the same time he claims to believe the New Testament is the word of God. He’s a sleazy hypocrite who’s ashamed of what he believes and so he lies about it in order to help his political chances.

  50. Don’t tell me, Justus. Tell “Christian minister” and “Bible believer” Mike Huckabee.

  51. 51. Gravatar by Justus331 01.14.08 at 5:25 pm

I do not have access to him as I do you, Sir. You’re more of a concern to me than he is. You claim to not even believe in God. Kinda weird though this….anti-God idea you possess, Mr Train. You seem to have a grasp on theology as you are quoting scripture in a proper context. It tells me you are intelligent on things that matter to you. ( post #49) :) That is a good thing, Night Train.

I look forward to speaking….uuumm, blogging with you in the future on this idea, if that is well with you.

  52. Night Train,
My bad. I thought, incorrectly, that you were slamming him for preaching in the pulpit.

As it is, I quite agree with you…

  53. 53. Gravatar by Chas 01.14.08 at 6:01 pm

In the pulpit, Huckabee was being a preacher. Outside, he was a politician. Night Train has a point. I have terribly mixed emotions in this. I think that if God has called a man to preach, there is no more important job on earth. More important than being president.

I’ve forgotten who asked if he was still ordained. If a Southern Baptist preacher is ordained by a local church, he is always ordained, unless removed for cause. Answer: He is still ordained.

Happy Birthday, Karen O and Pauline. 8-)
It kinda snook up on us.

EYG: I waved at you in Orlando, but you never waved back.

We had to take PE in high school. It was a waste of time. The teacher was also the football and basketball coach. We just chose sides and played pick-up football or basketball. I did get to shower though. That was great because we had no inside bath at home.

Harris: I’m sorry about Karen, I prayed for her and hoped she would recover well.

I have lots of rants and raves. But it’s best to wait till Friday. Maybe some of the rants will have worked themselves out by then.

    Rob Hayes,
I was born in Dallas county in Garland Texas. It used to be a “bedroom community” but like so much of the DFW metroplex it has come into its own both good and bad. Lived in Austin prior to heading to Ft Sam Houston (San Antonio)

Michelle, I’m just now ending the block of leave they told everyone to take once we returned. It has gone good so far. In July I move to Ft Polk Louisiana.

On the topic of BMI. Some parents of very young kids let the youngins’ teeth rot out. The horror stories a dental asst could tell you.
Schools need to boot out all the catered fast food. And get rid of the vending machines unless you stock them with fruit!
Finally, instead of poor districts building professional quality football stadia, why not spend that money on enhanced phys ed training for the coach and PE teachers.
There are lotsa towns where the city or the developers failed to install hike and bike walking/running trails.
So put that BMI and its meaning in plain English on the kids’ report cards. Mandatory parent/teacher/dietician conferences! Do you want all the other 49 states to wind up like Mississippi!!??

  55. 55. Gravatar by Peter V 01.14.08 at 6:44 pm

    Night Train

Get your story straight. I quote from the article you linked to.
Asked by reporters later if he thinks only Christians will go to heaven, Huckabee refused to say. He often says that as a minister, he joked that he doesn’t even believe all Baptists are going to heaven.

At no time does the article quote Huckabee as saying he does not know if people who are not believers do not go to heaven. Yet that is what you claim he state in two of your posts, #38 and #44.

Then you make the claim in #46 that Huckabee said that we have no way of knowing. Where in the article did you see that?

In #49 you might be closer to accuracy, although unless you are Mike Huckabee yourself, you have no right to judge his motives. Sometimes Jesus refused to answer questions as well. Especially when he knew that the question was not really asked in a quest for truth, but rather in an attempt to trap him in what he was saying.

Now there are a number of things that I don’t know here. Like what was going through Mr. Huckabee’s mind when he answered the question the way he did. Or whether the reporter clipped the quote in such a way to make Huckabee look as bad as possible. But I do know that the article does not state that Huckabee claimed to not know whether non-Christians go to heaven.

  56. Riiiight, Peter V. A reporter asks a preacher of the gospel if only Christians go to heaven, and he refuses to answer, and then said that’s a decision that only God can make, falsely implying that God hasn’t spoken quite definitively on the subject in John 14:6 and other passages, and you defend him, and accuse me of lying about him. You’re a real piece of work.

You claim to not even believe in God.

That’s an outright lie. I’ve never said I don’t believe in God, and I’ve repeatedly stated quite emphatically that I most certainly do believe in God. Stop lying about me.

  57. That second part was directed at Justus.

  58. 58. Gravatar by KayVee 01.14.08 at 6:57 pm

During the last debate Huckabee commented that, although the constitution forbids a religious test for president, he was the only one being questioned about his religion. As far as I can see, he was right. While some have commented on Romney’s religion, he has not been asked about it’s tenets in any of the nationally televised debates that I know of. Have any of the other candidates been asked about their’s [in a debate]? I certainly haven’t watched them all, but I do read a lot and I haven’t seen any such reports. Does anyone know? Has Sen. Clinton been asked about how closely she follows Methodism? Has Sen. Obama been asked if he agrees with the church he belongs to that reportedly lists supporting black businesses, and all things African, and speaks of “white Christians” as not supporting freeing slaves [William Wilburforce, et al, notwithstanding] as their major beliefs [one item I read said the writer couldn’t find a reference to Jesus on their web site. I don’t have the time or inclination to check it out myself, as that is not my point in this post]? What about Rudy’s brand of Catholicism, has he been questioned in a nationally televised debate about what he believes vs what his church teaches?

BTW, Huckabee is not my choice for President, I’m asking this because I’m not seeing equal treatment of the candidates on this matter. Not even here.

  59. 59. Gravatar by KayVee 01.14.08 at 7:01 pm

  61. Today on my blog I posted a bit about the case of Ezra Levant in Alberta, Canada. Do you have an opinion about the matter?

He’s the man facing charges for publishing those anti-Muslim cartoons in Canada, right? Well, best get used to it. Tell me, have you ever spoken out against Canada trying “holocaust deniers” for things they’ve written? If not, it’s a little late to start complaining that free speech is dead in Canada.

On an absolutely light topic, apparently the public can vote for Miss America this year. If you’re so inclined, check this out: http://tlc.discovery.com/tv/miss-america/contestants.html

We actually know Miss California, a charming young woman, who was in our youth group in Ukiah. So, vote for Melissa! :-)

And if you can’t decide, please vote for the only beauty pagent winner I’ve ever known: Miss California, Melissa Chaty. An absolutely charming young woman who was in our youth group in Ukiah. :-)

  65. Dittos to what Peter V said. It’s hilarious (if not sad) to watch NT on this blog ridiculing Christians for things they never said in the first place.

    Night Train,

Again you are twisting your interpretation of was stated with what was actually stated.

Could be that you are right that Huckabee is not what he claims. Politically it has been questioned whether he is the fiscal conservative that he portrays himself as. But I will suggest a different way of looking at things, just from what the article says.

    Huckabee states:
    1. he doesn’t even believe all Baptists will go to heaven.
    2. He has deep convictions about who goes and who doesn’t
    3. The decision as to who goes and who doesn’t is not his, but God’s.

    He does not state
    1. I don’t know what it takes.
    2. I believe there are many ways.

Plenty of times I have been asked why as a Christian I am so narrow minded to believe that there is only one way. My response has often been that I believe that God has revealed that in the Scripture. That my belief is based on what I believe God said and that I do not make the rules or the decisions–that is God’s role. I get the feeling that Huckabee’s comment here is similar, especially given the fact that he even states that “not all baptists will be in heaven.”

After all there are people who attend Baptist churches that have not put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, but instead are counting on being “good enough” to be allowed entrance to heaven.

  68. Ok Night Train,
Time to suck it up, and act like a man. You’ve insulted several of us, now pony up. Is Peter V right or not? And no fair making attacks on him (or anyone else - that goes for you too OutKast). I admit to not reading the article. If you’ve portrayed the situation correctly, then I’ll agree with you, if not, and Peter is correct, then you’ve got some apologizing to do…

  69. He’s waffling because he’s ashamed of the gospel. I know it, you know it, and everyone reading this knows it.

I don’t know exactly what Huckabee said or meant, but here’s what one pastor I had said about the subject. (This is not an exact quote. I’m paraphrasing what I remember him saying.)

We know Jesus said He is the Way to the Father. We also know that people who lived before Jesus who trusted in God were accepted by Him. So it’s not clear that, to come to the Father, one necessarily needs to know about Jesus. From Romans, it seems that it may be that God accepts people based on how they have responded to what they do know (as all people know something of God - whether they acknowledge it or not - based on creation and their conscience). But the Bible doesn’t give us any reason to be confident that people will come to God apart from conscious knowledge of Jesus. And we are commanded to go teach/disciple all nations. So while we may find some peace of mind from knowing that the decision is up to God, and we don’t know quite how it all works out, we still need to be about spreading the Gospel.

If Huckabee had something along these lines in mind, I don’t have a problem with that. (Not that I plan to vote for Huckabee anyway.)

  71. Night Train,

I just read the article, and I’m afraid I have to agree with Peter V.

    What part of:

    “You gotta be perfect”

    and

“Well, I’m afraid I don’t have that, but you know what, I won’t be there alone that day. Somebody is going to be with me. His name is Jesus, and he’s promised that he would never leave me or forsake me,”

didn’t you get? This makes it fairly plain that good works aren’t going to do the job, and that Jesus is the only way.

It’s fairly vague even so, but we’ve been given quotes out of context, and we have no idea whether the rest of his sermonizing made it more clear than indicated above.

In any case, I think you’re all wet.

Night Train, looks like you’re stuck again!

  73. Austin…aw, Sawgunner, I’m sorry. Oops, my Aggie seems to be showing.

Thank you for your service, and good luck with the new assignment in Louisiana. Remember to carry cash if you get pulled over by a state trooper and have Texas plates. ;)

  74. didn’t you get? This makes it fairly plain that good works aren’t going to do the job, and that Jesus is the only way.

Yeah, I got it alright. You still don’t have even basic reading or reasoning skills.

    I KNOW he said that.

    I’ve talked about it REPEATEDLY.

What you choose to keep ignoring is that when a reporter asked him if only Christians go to heaven, he refused to answer.

He says one thing in churches to Christians, and then says another to reporters.

He’s a pathetic, lying weasel who knows that he doesn’t dare answer the reporter’s question truthfully or the ADL will tear him a new one.

    Night Train and EVERYONE.

PLEASE NOTICE, there are NO QUOTES on this. It is the reporters ideas, that are brought forth, NO DIRECT QUOTE. This piece is interwoven with quotes, and reporters saying what they ‘think’- nothing more, nothing less.

Below is the comment BY THE REPORTER, LIBBY QUAID. I am leaving the quote marks off below but putting a dash, just to ensure this is not taken as a quote from Huckabee.

-Asked by reporters later if he thinks only Christians will go to heaven, Huckabee refused to say. He often says that as a minister, he joked that he doesn’t even believe all Baptists are going to heaven.-

Quotes are quotes, ideas from reporters, and their take on it are NOT QUOTES-

  76. Dear Chas,
    Terribly sorry!
    Thanks for the wave.
    I’m waving now!

We’re you at Disney, or did you happen to be at the Young Life conference?
My sister was one of the worship leaders.

  77. Welcome back EYG!

    Good night all.

  78. Victoria, are you hitting the Nyquil again? I told you to watch those expiration dates.

You believe in God, eh? Your posts here on WoW would reflect that, I believe, and you would be kinder to those who have expressed faith in God, whether it be Mike Huckabee or somebody posting here. The Bible says that out of the heart, the mouth speaks. Train, after seeing what you’ve written on this thread makes folks think you are in dire need of prayer.
    You’re being quite defensive, Train……..

  82. Justus - NO WV because it was Sunday and there are never any new threads on Sunday.

EYG, We were vacationing to get away from the NC winter. We don’t do Disney anymore. We were going to go to Silver Springs on Thursday but the I-4 pileup changed our minds.

StuBob: I wonder if there will be a thread next Sunday if the Chargers don’t do exceptionally well. Lynn will be obliged to say something.

Huh, Lynn? I suspect that if the Chargers beat the Patriots, Lynn’s fingers will not be able to function.

Night Train, you sound an awful lot like “ed”, who just seemed to delight in arguing angrily!

Anyhow, I have no problem with what Huckabee said. Jesus is the only way to the Father (salvation), but God is the ultimate judge. I believe we’ll be surprised when we get to Heaven at who is not there–people who claimed to be believers but really weren’t; and people who made the decision in the “eleventh hour.” None of us is really able to determine if someone is “saved” or not; I believe that may have been what Huckabee was intending (my own thought…)

Also, I too noticed that it is ONLY Huckabee who is questioned so much about his “religion.” My husband and I are praying daily for him.
    Blessings!
