Good morning!

Today’s quote is from a theologian: “Give me chastity and continence, but not quite yet.”

    St. Augustine of Hippo?

    How apt. That’s Augustine.

Apt, because of this, from Emily Yoffe, at Slate.

perhaps in our desire not to make moral judgments about personal choices, young women wholly unprepared to be mothers are not getting the message that there are dire consequences of having (unprotected) sex with guys too lame to be fathers. There is a scene in the teen pregnancy movie Juno in which the title character, a 16-year-old who has decided not to abort her unplanned baby but to give it up for adoption, is having an ultrasound. The technician, thinking she has on the examining table another knocked-up teenager planning to raise her child, makes disparaging remarks about children born into those circumstances. We are supposed to loathe this character and cheer when Juno’s stepmother puts her in her place. But I found myself sympathetic to the technician. Why is it verboten to express the truth that growing up with a lonely, overwhelmed mother and a missing father is a recipe for childhood pain?

  3. Happy Good Friday all. I was lying in bed trying to sleep late when my mind started wandering. Today is the day that people around here plant their summer garden. That led me to thinking that at certain times of the month, dpending on the phase of the moon, if you dig a hole you will either have too much or not enough dirt to refill it. Also if you have ants and you take some ant from one bed and put it on the other bed it will kill the ants.
Do any of you have any tidbits of folk wisdom to share?

Good Morning Folks. The Lord has certainly blessed us in the Baumgart household. My daughter’s biopsy of her thyroid came back benign and they were able to save all four of her para thyroids.

  5. #3 Kim,

It’s better to have some dirt in gardens than to have ants?

  6. Joe B.,
    What a blessing!!

  7. Here’s my prediction for the presidential election in November:

After duking it out for the next few months, Obama eeks out the nomination over Clinton. However, because of questionable political schenanigans at the convention, the Dem party is split and a third party candidate emerges. Meanwhile, more questions over Obama’s relationship with Rev. Wright continue to emerge, and coupled with his liberal voting record and inexperience, his support continues to fall.

Meanwhile, a court ruling declares, just prior to the Repub convention, that McCain is ineligible for the presidency because he is not native born. As his VP choice was going to be Huckabee, he endorses Huck as the nominee, and this carries the convention (i.e., Huck has his “miracle”).

Come November, a divided Dem party with a weakening candidate cannot must enough electoral votes to win. Huckabee is our next president.

Oh well, that has about as much chance of happening as my NCAA bracket has a chance of coming true!

  8. California courts just made it illegal for parents to home school their children unless they are credentialed by the state of CA as a teacher. For higher grades the parents would also have to be certified in each discipline, math, science, English etc.

It seems that the teachers union was upset that homeschoolers where outperforming all other students at all levels - by any standard. So much for the freedom and liberty to pursue happiness and teach your children well.

Socialists will soon not allow, by court action, conservatives to have children in the first place.

I was baby talking the cat yesterday and my husband felt compelled to remind that she was a vicious killing machine. A soft, friendly, fluffy one that purrs, but a killing machine just the same. What makes humans want to bring scaled downed predator carnivores like dogs and cats, or as they are known in our house doggies and kitties, into our homes put bows on them, give them cute names like Fluff-Fluff and tell them how pretty they are? Okay I don’t do all of that, but our Border collie, one of the closest dogs to a wolf, had a neckerchief that she wore to the Highland games.

Just thought I would offer you all an adoption update. The kids have been with us approx six months now and their social worker just told us she has done nothing to begin the process yet. So we are not too far along legally yet. We would like to see more progress of course, the kids want it done for closure and opening the new life. We want it done as we travel out of state and for now have to get court permission giving a complete daily itinerary for every day out of state, where we will be and who we will see and a moment by moment contact number.

As far as the family, things are going great. We have seen some attitudes change and people are getting comfortable with each other. We are discovering strengths and weaknesses and helping to develop those and teach other coping skills. The kids are giving us daily infusions of love and laughter, joy and confusion. Things are good.

    Mumsee,

The social worker has done nothing to begin the adoption process? You you ask them not to or, do you need a new social worker who … eerrr….works?

  13. 13. Gravatar by mumsee 03.21.08 at 2:30 pm

    Llama,

As we have always suspected, job security means you keep the kids on the rolls. We want it done as soon as possible. The kids want it done as soon as possible. The relatives want it done as soon as possible.

  14. That’s too bad about the adoption process Mumsee. It’s not like you can hire a different social worker. If it was a lawyer, you could fire ‘em…

Hope it all works out for y’all.

On a random note, came home from Good Friday services and am now listening to Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful songs (#3, alas not the Upshaw version). Earlier this week it was Bach’s St. Matthew Passion.

    Bonjour!

Have any of you heard of Chantal Sebire? I don’t know how much it is discussed outside of France, but if you google her name you will find her story. In short, she was a normal mother and school teacher who was diagnosed several years ago with a very rare, disfiguring facial tumor. Her condition grew worse and worse, leaving her quite disfigured, blind, and in terrible pain. She appealed the French law against euthanasia, begging the government all the way up to Sarkozy for the right to die now instead of spending more time in such pain and suffering from an eventually fatal disease. Sarkozy said no (with qualifications). She was found dead in her home on Wednesday.
It’s the type of story that makes me rethink my stance on euthanasia. I’ve heard quite a bit about her because she was from Plombieres-les-Dijon, a suburb of Dijon where I currently live.
I would provide sources but the best ones I know of are in French.

Kbells - For that matter, why do we have babies? Think about it - in their “natural” condition, babies & toddlers aren’t much more civilized or tame than those kitties & doggies. But we tell them how cute & sweet they are. :-)

My theory about why God gave us cats & dogs-

Dogs show us the love & adoration & worship & trust that we should feel for God.

Cats, in their “I’ll show you affection when I feel like showing you affection, & ignore you when I don’t…& hey, where’s my Fancy Feast?” attitude, show us what we can be like towards God. He wants us to want to spend time (show affection) with Him, but we give it to Him when we can fit it in.

    Mumsee,

Sorry to hear that the legal adoption process hasn’t been started yet, but it sounds like the heart adoptions are proceeding well. Most social workers I know (my sister is one), are carrying a much larger case load than they should be and so are ruled by the tyranny of the urgent. Cases that aren’t demanding their attention get put on the bottom of the pile. You might have to be a squeaky wheel for a while.

  19. 19. Gravatar by mumsee 03.21.08 at 4:13 pm

    Ajisuun,

We kind of figured that. Our worker was handled the whole kit and kaboodle when they made some changes. I think she figures the kids are fine here so she can focus on more pressing issues. Understandable, but the kids would like to know if they are us or them legally.

Enjoy your company and be careful you don’t turn into the dreaded megachurch with the seven of you.

Karen O, that was a bit harsh on the kitty cats! I realize I exist to serve up the proper can of Fancy Feast and refresh those crunchies — and I learned today that they’d better be the right crunchies — but my little guy got depressed when I went on vacation and he ended up at the vet’s. He thought he’d been abandoned. And he comes to me several times a day to let me massage and pet him. Cats love their owners, too. I know what you mean, but you insulted my boy. :)

Oh Baby! March Madness is crazy already. The USD Toreros just beat UConn. What a game. What election? What war? All the local channels will be all Toreros all night. Unbelieveable.

  22. 22. Gravatar by Karen O 03.21.08 at 6:59 pm

NJL - Well, then I also insulted my “little girl”, Peanut. I actually like cats! (And I really like dogs, too.)

I get a kick out of the arrogance in a look that little kitty can give me. Who does she think she is? And what do I do? I try to make her happy.

She even “trained” me to get up in the middle of the night to give her some wet food. (I usually have to go to the bathroom anyway, so it’s not so bad. And I have the food already in a dish in the fridge.)

    Pathetic, aren’t I? :-)

  23. 23. Gravatar by kBells 03.21.08 at 7:06 pm

Personally I like cats a little better. Living with a cat is like living with a friend. They enjoy your company but you live your life and they live theirs, Living with a dog is like living with a relative. There’s all this emotion and obligation and guilt. “Why did you leave me? I thought you were gone forever. How could you do this to me after I’ve gave you the best year of my life.” “Good grief, Rover I just went to get the mail.” I get enough of that from the in-laws.

  24. 24. Gravatar by mumsee 03.21.08 at 8:20 pm

The dogs just eat the mice they catch, the cat brings it for me to look at. Yuck. Just eat it and be done with it.

  25. 25. Gravatar by Ajisuun 03.21.08 at 9:18 pm

I grew up with dogs (no, I’m not talking about my brothers), but now I have a cat that I inherited. I thought she was weird because she always brings me her kills to see. She will cry outside the door until I come and praise her sufficiently, then she will eat it. One day she knew that I was in a certain building so she followed me there with her still live catch in her mouth for me to see. Unfortunately we were in the middle of church. So she’s staring in the screen door crying, trying to get my attention and the mouse is squirming trying to get away. Fortunately a friend who knows what the cat is looking for is sitting close to the door, so she whispers out the door, “Good girl, Precious” and we immediately hear, crunch, crunch, crunch as she starts her breakfast.

  26. 26. Gravatar by mumsee 03.21.08 at 9:47 pm

Not weird at all, that is what cats do. Because they have huge egos that must be assauged. If you don’t praise them for their horrific deeds, they retalite on your leg or curtains. Why do you suppose they are lying around all day dreaming? It is to come up with their next plan of retaliation.

  27. 27. Gravatar by kBells 03.21.08 at 9:58 pm

Mice never bothered me that much, but the snake incident. Cats also don’t understand the meaning of phobia. I think that was the beginning of the end of my feminist days because I proceeded to call every male relative I had to come get that snake out of my kitchen. (Pet door have their drawback)

Amazing Toreros, adios! Very happy for you.

Damn, i just wish I’d had the guts to pick them in my bracket. :-(

Four big upsets today. March Madness delivers!

Peanut once left a mouse in one of my shoes. Fortunately, it was a toy mouse. Still startled me.
