Poetic justice

A group of vandals who trashed Robert Frost’s former Vermont home last year during a night of revelry paid penance through poetry last week. As part of their plea deals, 25 of the young adults could have their records wiped clean after undergoing the Frost classes, which were taught by a Middlebury College professor who donated his time.

“I guess I was thinking that if these teens had a better understanding of who Robert Frost was and his contribution to our society, that they would be more respectful of other people’s property in the future and would also learn something from the experience,” said prosecutor John Quinn.

But will the unique sentence have the desired effect? For 22-year-old Ryan Kenyon, “It’s a lesson learned, that’s for sure. It did bring some insight. People do many things that they don’t realize the consequences of. It shined a light, at least to me.”

I love creative sentencing like this. It will be interesting to learn what road they ultimately take–even the one with the skateboard. :-)

  2. I would like creative sentencing more if judges would use it on top of jail time.

Michelle: You brought a really good visual to mind, a kid skateboarding down a road in the middle of a forest. :)

There is one judge in Colorado I think who makes people who play their stereos to loud listen to like bad 80’s music. Apparently he never has repeat offenders!
