Good morning!

Today’s quote: “By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you’ll be happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.”

    Thank God I’m happy!

There is one Socrates quote I recognize instantly.

I guess I need to keep an eye out for my husband becoming too philosophical.

  4. This week I am surveying lurkers to see if anyone who reads but does not post or posts only infrequently has changed his or her mind by reading posts on WOW.. Yesterday, a number of people–not lurkers–publicly posted sensible reasons for why they post, and I thank you for answering.

If you are an infrequent poster, you can write me anonymously at [email protected]. So far I have not received any secret emails, so I am keeping your identity secret. But there’s still time to tell all, with a dark cloak over your form and a mask over your face.

    RN,

Not sure I count has an infrequent poster or a lurker, but I have had my mind changed by posts. Not on the huge issues like “is there or isn’t there a God?” But on other issues people bring in information I did not have or make points I’ve never thought of, on issure like global warming, ANWR, some piece of literature, etc.

I love it when we get a good conversation going. What usually kills it is when someone takes offense at someone’s sense of humor or becomes shrill because someone dared to disagree with them.

  6. That is so true

That Socrates. The Henny Youngman of ancient Greece. I hear doing stand-up was a tough gig back then.

#4. So one of us could sneak in and pretend to be a lurker who only shows up to see what that brilliant kBells has to say today, because she has change my life in so many wonderful ways. Not that I’d really do that. Now Of course if somebody really does say that you will think it is me.

  13. Well, I guess I got the good wife, since I am happy. And Mrs L is chronologically a year older (as of yesterday) but still my young*, beautiful wife.

*She was born in the 60s, so she is young, and always will be!

  14. Computer question for anyone who can help -

We have cable access to the internet at home, through a desktop computer running Windows XP Pro. It has Internet Connection Sharing turned on. Two other computers are connected via a hub, a desktop running Win98 and a laptop running WinXP Home. Until a few days ago, all three had internet access with no trouble except the occasional need to reboot the main one when it lost its connection. This had been working for at least two years.

We didn’t change any settings (that we know of). I did have to reboot the main computer when it lost its connection the other night. Now neither of the other two can connect to the internet, though network connections among the three computers were still working. Both have been rebooted.

I went through the ICS troubleshooting tool and found nothing helpful, so I called tech support at our ISP. A young-sounding guy who also sounded like he was reading off the ICS troubleshooting tool stepped me through several things, none of which helped and at least one of which made it so the laptop doesn’t have even the basic network connection to the other computers now.

He had me do an ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. Release worked, renew didn’t (thus no more network connection). We tried using the Repair option under Network Connections, with the same results - it just says renew didn’t work.

I tried a dnsflush (from advice I found on the internet) and rebooted the PC, but no change. I made sure DNS is not deactivated (the service is listed as started when I check status). The tech support guy had suggested I try a router instead of a hub, but I honestly don’t see why that would help.

I’m pretty knowledgeable on IT stuff myself, though my technical skills are about two versions of Windows out-of-date, except as a “power user.” I work in an IT dept, but the people here are rather busy with work, which I’m sure they see as more important than my husband being able to connect to the online role-playing game he GMs (though he finally did dig out his password, which he had long ago forgotten since the laptop remembered it, and get connected on the main PC). Plus they’re used to handling our corporate network which is rather different from a 3-node peer-to-peer workgroup.

The only ideas I have left are uninstalling and reinstalling TCP/IP and the network card itself, and since things went backward with the ipconfig renew I’m not sure I want to risk going further backward by uninstalling, unless there are no other ideas to try.

  15. Note to HSK (and anyone else who can answer):

On Saturday’s “Religion: and art” thread, I posted this:

    25. by Peter L 08.02.08 at 7:56 pm

Most PE church members seem to enjoy very pedestrian works of art.

What exactly is meant by “pedestrian art”? Surely you mean something other than street scenes.

I still have not seen an answer, even though there are 89 posts.

  16. Pauline:

So right now your setup is this:

    cable modem — WinXP_PC — hub — {Win98_PC, laptop}

I’d recommend ditching the hub and spending $30-$50 on a router, and setting it up like this:

    cable modem — router — {WinXP_PC, Win98_PC, laptop}

It’s easier to set up and maintain, it’s far more secure, and if your laptop is wireless capable you can buy a wireless router and not be tethered to a hub.

As I understand you, right now your WinXP box is connected directly to the cable modem. This means that between your home network and the wicked wide world of teh internets stands only your WinXP box with whatever software firewalls you have in place. If you don’t have a 3rd party software firewall, but only use WinXP’s built in firewall, you are relying on the most well-known (by hackers) and attacked firewall in the world. A router provides a hardware firewall, shielding your home computers from the Internet in a private network.

And a router is easier to set up because it automatically acquires an IP address from your Internet Service Provider, automatically assigns private IP addresses to computers connected to it (through DHCP), and passes data back and forth seamlessly. It is really as simple as “plug this cord into the modem, plug these cords into the computers,” and any modern operating system will take care of the rest. Plus it’s more convenient. If your husband just wants to surf the ‘Net with his laptop, you don’t need to turn on your WinXP PC to do so.

Other than that, it sounds to me like your problem right now is with the connection sharing. If the computers can ping each other, the hub is fine. If the WinXP PC has access, the Internet connection is fine. I’d assume the WinXP PC has had some hiccup in sharing its connection. To isolate the problem, though, I’d connect directly from the cable modem to your laptop and Win98 PCs to make sure they have internet access that way. If they do, you’re sure it’s the WinXP PC’s connection sharing. If they don’t, it looks like your Win98 PC and laptop may be the source of the trouble.

  17. Peter L, from yesterday. Ambassador appointments are all open. I need a good conservative who can work with Hispanics. We often appoint ambassadors who have no connection to the country they work with. I’m changing that. So, name your country. If you can deliver Arizona and PR, you’re in. See AJ about this. He’s keeping a record of all the appointments.
After my initial comments, throwing my hat into the ring, I dismissed the idea because I don’t look good on TV and don’t have the media in my pocket. However, Drill says he will stand beside me and make me look good by comparison. I doubt that it will work, but it’s worth a try. It won’t help during the debates. I remember in 1960, Nixon had everything going for him, but he was sweating under the TV lights during the debate, and though everyone thought he won, the image defeated him. Since I have Obama’s ears and Jimmy Durante’s nose, there may not be much hope. I can imagine the caricatures in the papers.
I’m thinking of outlining a platform when I get time. Unfortunately, I have lots of work spreading mulch, trimming bushes and pruning trees that comes before immigration, terrorism, the defecit, and energy on my personal agenda. But it’s too hot right now to do much outside at one time, and at my age, I need to pace it. So I may work up something later.
    Stay tuned.

  18. Peter:

Are you just looking for a definition, or are you challenging HSK’s assertion that art Christians love is pedestrian?

He meant kitschy and inartistic. Thomas Kinkade and cute little Precious Moments dolls. He meant PEs are philistines, but he was too polite to say so.

  19. Thanks, JJF. I didn’t realize a router could be used that way. I just cornered one of our helpdesk people on his way toward the breakroom and he also suggested a router. And told me I could probably get one free from our PC setup people because we’ve completely converted to wireless and they’re throwing out the old wired ones.

So now I have what appears to be a brand new Linksys Cable/DSL Router (no doubt bought as a spare shortly before the conversion to wireless), which means it even comes with instructions.

  20. 20. Gravatar by momof5 08.05.08 at 10:57 am

    Congrats, Pauline!

#18 Well, I guess my artistic tastes are inartistic. I decorated our first nursery with Precious Moments (including the figurines I collected as a girl), and I think Thomas Kinkade paints some of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen. (I’ve bought his cards and magnets, and my favorite mug is a Kinkade. His paintings are too expensive, though.) So, my taste is “pedestrian”? ;-)

BTW, I’m just fine with that!

I have a computer question, too. We recently added parental controls to the computers. Since then, the main one is doing 2 weird things.

    1) Although our Norton summary says the computer is secure (antivirus, antispyware, and firewall), pop-up warnings say we’ve turned these off. When I check the account, it says “secure”. (We do have a router, so that’s a hardware firewall, too, right?)

    2) Now when I turn on the same computer (Dell, Vista), the monitor turns off before it’s even done booting up and won’t turn back on with the buttons or wiggling the mouse. I have to unplug the monitor and then replug it, and then it stays on.

    Warranty is expired (of course).

I am NOT technologically gifted, so I may very well have done this to myself, but I have no idea where to go from here.

I’ve tried to trouble shoot on Norton’s site–no help there.

I’ve told the display to turn off “never” on the control panel. That has helped keep it on after the un-plug/re-plug steps. It was doing this a few times a day before.

This, Random, is another great reason to post!! So many smart, helpful people check in here!

I feel like a WV hog this morning, but I have one more serious request.

We found out Thurs that we’re expecting again, and last night I started spotting a little. I’m hopeful that the baby is fine, and I’m not panicky, but I really would appreciate your prayers.

I’m taking it easy this morning–a relative has the kids so I can rest. WoW is a welcome way to think about some other things.

My husband and I both agree, and reminded each other this morning before he left to teach, that whichever way this goes, God is good and He’ll give us the grace we need when we need it.

Set an all time travel record yesterday. My flight from Phoenix, thru Chicago to Richmond was delayed for 2.5 hours in Phoenix after we boarded the plane because of weather in Chicago we finally took off a 12 PM. When we landed in Chicago our gate was empty but we sat for 2.5 hours 25′ from it because of lightening. They wouldn’t let the ramp crew out to guide the plane in the last few feet for fear of them getting amped up unnecessarily.

My connecting flight was cancelled as was the next one - I would have missed them anyway but one flight to Richmond that was supposed to leave at 7 PM from Chicago was delayed and I got on it. We finally boarded the plane at 10:00 PM but sat on it for another 2.5 hours because of lightening again - the ramp crew could not push us away form the gate this time for fear of being toasted. We finally arrived in Richmond at 3:15 PM.

Being delayed 3 times sitting on the plane for a total of 7.5 hours because of lightening on the same trip, on the same day is a new Llamadom record. At no time did any any passengers complain except for a lawyer in first class when we arrived in Chicago who told a flight attendant that he was a lawyer and wanted to get off the plane, said he wanted the names and SS numbers of all the crew members so he could bring charges against them for attempted kidnapping and holding him against his will.

5 minutes later the captain came back and told him that the weather was outside of hois control but this plane was his and so was the lawyer while he was on it. He want on to say if he didn’t shut up he would duct tape him to his seat with his mouth taped shut and that he would have the airport police arrest him as soon as he could get to the gate adn get the door open.

He had a roll of duct tape in his hand and there were plenty of passengers who would have helped him since folks were agitated as it was. The lawyer immediately apologized, realizing his bluff was called and never said another word. Everyone else wasnormal. He must have missed a court date or something.

  33. Ah, no worries. My theory is that most of us are pedestrian in most of the arts, but have one or two particular fields that are our passions. As long as we don’t cross the line into philistinism (despising those arts we don’t know much about), it’s no problem.

    MomOf5:

Check your security settings. Start > Control Panel > Security Center. There are 3 things it monitors — Firewall, Automatic Updates, and Virus Protection. If all 3 have green lights next to them (as opposed to yellow or red), you’re fine.

If all 3 have green lights and you’re still getting the message, you may have an “adware” infection. Some programs install themselves on your computer while you browse the Net, pretend to be problems, and tell you “click here and buy our $40 product to solve this problem [that we just created].” It’s a digital protection racket.

Some of these are not hard to remove. The best program, IMO, is <a href=”http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html”Spybot Search & Destroy. It’s free.

If that doesn’t take care of the problem, you might want to take it to a TRUSTED computer repair place. Make sure to ask around for a good one, because many will just run Spybot S&D and then charge you $50 for their “cleaning service.”

Or you could just live with the nagware and just ignore it every time it pops up.

  34. sorry, here’s that link again:

    Spybot Search & Destroy.

I really ought to use the Preview button…

McCain would be stupid to pick his running mate before the Socialists and Marxists have their convention and officially pick theirs. McCain should not be in hurry. He has plenty of time. It is not like him to be stupid. He may be Maverick and you may not like some of choices but he is not stupid.

I’m sure the whack jobs on the left would love for McCain to do so but this would be a huge mistake. Having Obama go first is a huge advantage and Obama and McCain both know it.

McCain would be way better off picking a woman conservative, the governor of Alaska if he was going to choose someone from that teeny, tiny, state as a running mate. She is my first choice anyway and McCain should also announce he is only running for one term only at the convention too. He would win in landslide if he did both of these things. This is what Obama is worried about most of all.

You heard OT here first. MCCain is just enough Maverick to these two things too.

  36. Pauline,
JJF gave you some excellent advice. I have to wonder though if your cable modem is actually a modem/router, in which case you don’t really need another router.

If it is a router then you can set up the security within the modem itself, and you won’t really need much in the way of a firewall (or so I’m told).

I have DSL at home and work, and had set up a modem/router along with another router, and kept having a lot of problems. When I finally realized that I actually had two routers I removed the redundant router and the speed of things improved.

For cleaning up your computer, I’ve found CCleaner to be indispensable. It not only cleans up all your temp and recycle bin files, it cleans up a lot of other junk. The registry cleaner has proven to be reliable and safe also. I’ve used a lot of registry cleaners, and have experienced more than a few heartwrenching moments when you realized you didn’t back up the registry, and the cleaner deleted entries it wasn’t safe to delete..
CCleaner not only prompts you to save a registry backup to your documents folder, but also dates it for you, and then only deletes what you allow it to. So far, I’ve let it run on all the default settings and have never had a problem with it.

  37. 37. Gravatar by michelle 08.05.08 at 1:14 pm

I believe the governor of Alaska has a newborn, four other children, and already has said she prefers her job, thank you very much, so I think Palin is out of the running, Llama.

Sorry about your plane hijinxs; we had a terrific flight on Horizon yesterday from Seattle to Santa Rosa, CA–glorious views all the way down. I’d never seen Crater Lake from the air before and since we flew in a turboprop, we weren’t very high above it! All the mountains–Ranier, Shasta, Three Sisters–rode on clouds of, sigh, smoky haze and looked magical as twilight descended.

But they didn’t have much snow on them, and that, sigh, is another problem for the west.

  38. Oh. And make sure when you install it, that you have the “install toolbar” (google or yahoo, I forget) UN-checked. That’s the only thing I hate about the darn thing…

As for anti-spyware, I’ve used Spybot and Adaware both. Both are very good programs, but the average user hasn’t a clue what to tell them to do… That’s the problem I have with my current firewall/anti-virus/spyware program, ZoneAlarm. You can never tell what program it’s trying to stop, or whether you should stop it or not. It’s also so intrusive it slows down even good computers.
My tech friends tell me that Comodo is the firewall of choice now, but I can’t recommend it since I’ve never tried it.

  39. Here’s what I take “pedestrian” to mean when referring to the arts - humdrum, boring.

    Here’s Dictionary.com’s definition:

    pe·des·tri·an /pəˈdɛstriən/ [puh-des-tree-uhn]

    –noun
    1. a person who goes or travels on foot; walker.
    –adjective
    2. going or performed on foot; walking.
    3. of or pertaining to walking.
    4. lacking in vitality, imagination, distinction, etc.; commonplace; prosaic or dull: a pedestrian commencement speech.

Wow, P&G just announced their 2 nd quarter earnings of $3.2 Billion on @21.27 in sales. Their profits are 61% higher than Exxon’s. Obama should nationalized this company before he steals all of Exxon’s profits . P&G is really evil. He should also nationalize Warren Buffet’s companies since he makes way more profit than Exxon and of course, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and Ellison should all be shot for their huge and evil profits.

The lefty Socialists and Marxists just cannot get their massive brains around simple things worth knowing well - like business and capitalism :-)

  41. Roaring Lamb/Godlumps: The price of super unleaded fuel here in Dubuque dropped to $3.69 a gallon. Thank you President Bush! :)

(For those unfamiliar with why my family thanks President Bush for lower gas prices, it’s because the leftists kooks blame him for higher prices so we’re getting equal time.)

  42. Yesterday, I was snarky to Victoria on the Religion and Arts thread. She was correct, there was no call for that. I am sorry I said those uncharitable things Victoria, and will try to do better.

  43. 43. Gravatar by momof5 08.05.08 at 1:25 pm

JJF–Thanks! I sort of figured the account summary was more reliable than the pop-ups. You’ve eased my mind.

I’ll prob. get my husband to run the spybot. He’s not a tech-type, but he’s light-years ahead of me! :-)

    MiM,
Maybe CCleaner is near our speed…I wondered if the monitor thing was my mistake (very possible), or if it was a mischievous bug. I get nervous with “advanced user” situations!

She will come if McCain, her party and country calls. She isa a real conservative unlike McCain, and has been asked many times if she would turn it down if asked and her answer is always the same ‘I am happy where I am.’ That is political speak for she will take it in a heartbeat.

For a man who will turn 72 this month, he’s a surprisingly immature politician—erratic, impulsive and subject to peer pressure from the last knucklehead who offers him advice.

  48. re #45:

Given McCain’s age, his choice of VP is unusually important. Should McCain be elected, his VP could very well become the next president.

I’ve read some Romney rumors. But Romney has battled the same “RINO” reputation McCain battles. McCain needs somebody to draw the far right to the polls.

That’s great news Outkast. I saw Regular 85 octane for $4.99 a gallon in Ketchum Idaho last week. Needless to say I kept going and paid just $4.39 60 miles up the road in Stanley. Thank the Lord for President Bush.

I wish the oil companies would drill instead of just accumulate more leases. 97% of their leases have not even been explored! But, if they actually drilled, they would increase supply, lower prices, and not be posting record profits every quarter.

Better for their shareholders and executives that they do their public land grab while the Bushies are still running the show.

  50. 50. Gravatar by llama 08.05.08 at 2:16 pm

Yep McCain wins the ‘hot under the collar’ award and Obama wins the ‘Anti Christ’ award. McCain wins again. Obama just can’t seem to match up against a real man of character, strength, experience and who possesses the free market capitalism and American can do qualities that lead to success in the pursuit of happiness which all Presidents need so badly.

Obama is very weak candidate as the world, not to mention Hew is just plain pitiful but we have come to expect this from socialist and Marxist leaders of late. Sorry no race card intended.

    Outkast,

Actually, the latest drop in oil prices today was due to Obama saying he wants to take 70 Million barrels out of the strategic reserve and the market thought that, if he is elected, the speculators would really be toast. I wanted Bush to announce the same thing just to put the lefty speculators on wall street who have been manipulating the oil market, for their profit and no one elses, in their place - but the insane Obama doing it was priceless.

He just whacked the lefties who have been financing his campaign right in their wallet for no reason. You know they have been just ripping him a new rear end on the phone all day today. You have to love it that this inexperienced nitwit just can’t keep his mouth shut and McCain has him afraid of his own shadow - by doing nothing to get it this train wrecks way.

I just finished reading American Jihad by Steven Emerson. It is a good, and important, book. However, it contains much of the same material as Willful Blindness , by McCarthy. If I had known that, I wouldn’t have read Emerson’s book. McCarthy’s book has more legal data, but is a more interesting read.
Both are important books, but they serve the same purpose. Emerson, BTW, is “Max” in Terrorist Hunter.

Then I come on here and see Momof5 needs one. Too, but she’s pregnant so skipp the brandy on hers.

Praying for you momof5 from momof7

The Federal Government suggests several easy ways to reduce our dependence on foreign oil IMMEDIATELY — and save yourself some money.

    A tune-up can save 4% or $0.16/gallon

Check/Replace air filters can save up to 10% or $0.40/gallon

Properly inflated tires can save up to 3% or $0.12/gallon

Using the recommended grade of motor oil can save up to 2% or $0.08/gallon

Or we can just wait 22 years for a 7% increase in supply from offshore drilling.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports: The projections in the OCS access case indicate that access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Gulf regions would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030. … any impact on average wellhead prices is expected to be insignificant.”

Another reason to support BOB BARR and not McSame for President in 2008!

Atlanta, GA — “The nation’s founders intentionally avoided creating a monarchy. Unfortunately, many American presidents have forgotten their history lessons, and believe they possess monarchical power,” observes Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party presidential nominee. “Yesterday U.S. District Court Judge John Bates reminded us that presidents, too, must be accountable, when he ruled that former White House legal counsel Harriet Miers must obey a validly issued subpoena and testify before Congress.”

Barr, who last week testified before the House Judiciary Committee on presidential abuses of power, explains: “both the judiciary and Congress must be vigilant in calling the executive branch to account. The Framers created three branches of government to disperse power and ensure the checks and balances necessary to protect the people’s liberties.”

I also know that we can easily increase our supply of crude, not to mention other energy spources, by 20% easily in about 7 years adn the bulk of that in less time. You lefties aren’t very good at business, schedules and getting anything worth doing done - so you need to get pout of the way and let the adults do this for you.

But, for some reason you socialists can steal all the money from those that have it and teach kids to put condoms on cucumbers in no time flat. Go figure that out :-)

  77. Llama obliquely mentioned something that interests me.

How many of you believe Obama is or has a greater likelihood than the average presidential candidate of being the Anti-Christ of Revelation?

McCain ran an ad called “The One” that many left-leaning bloggers are calling a hidden message to evangelicals that Obama may be the Anti-Christ. On reading that, I thought such a tactic seemed too low for John McCain, but then I saw the video. It sure does leave open that interpretation. I even asked my wife, with no prompting, “what do you think of this ad?” She responded, “Oh, he’s totally setting Obama up to the be the Anti-Christ.”

So I’m asking you all. Do you believe it is or may be true? Do you know others who do? Do you believe it effective motivation for evangelicals who are lukewarm about Obama?

Can we get a thread on this, maybe?

  78. Sorry, that question should have been, “do you believe it effective motivation for evangelicals who are lukewarm about McCain?” (In other words, McCain saying, “This guy is the Anti-Christ. You’ve got to stop him.”)

I don’t know what I believe about the Antichrist. There’s a part of me that believes a la partial preterism that the Antichrist was Caeser Nero. That view keeps things nice and clean from any other time in history, but then there’s another historicist part of me that believes that the Antichrist is anyone who exalts Himself instead of or against Christ and that these people will be here at different times throughout history until our Lord Jesus Christ returns. I think most scholars hold to the latter view.

I think we need to ask ourselves whether Obama is THE antichrist or is one of many. He’s certainly one of many.

After service a brother came up to greet us and in the conversation that ensued he mentioned that he thinks Obama is the Antichrist. I smiled and shrugged, not knowing what to say. That’s rare for me!

    But I came back for:
    Stupid Alert!
Since we’re talking about saving energy-
There was an article in the newspaper Sunday by guys (brothers, they have real names) called Click&Clack on NPR. They answered a letter from a guy who had accidentally torn up his transmission by putting it into “neutral”. They said he accidentaly put it into reverse. That is hard on transmissions, especially if one is going downhill at 60mph. He might save some gas, but it cost over $2000 to replace a transmission.
Some cars won’t let you place it into reverse while running. But you don’t want to test it.
Do not try to put your car into neutral and coast downhill!
The cost of saving the planet is prohibitive.

There will someday be “the son of perdition” mentioned in 2 Thess. 2:3f and in Revelation. I make no predictions of any kind; however, I suspect the man Paul speaks of in 2 Thessalonians will be smarter than the empty suit we’re talking about here.

Indeed, all praise, honor, and glory go to our Dear Leader, President Bush who single-handedly lowered the price of gas. We worship and adore our Dear Leader for using his majestic and omnipotent powers to lower the price of gas. All Americans should fall to their knees in worship and adulation of the Dear Leader’s actions on our behalf!

Of course, while the price of gas went up over the last 7 1/2 years of our Dear Leader’s rule, it was not his fault. He was completely and utterly without any power to affect the price of gas. There was absolutely nothing he could do.

    We love our Dear Leader!

Trent Lott Witness Tampering and Insurance Fraud? Why not.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) An insurance company’s attorney suggested during a sworn deposition that former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott urged witnesses to give false information in a Hurricane Katrina lawsuit, according to court records.

The implication was made last week during a deposition with Lott’s nephew, Zach Scruggs, who represented the former Mississippi Republican senator after his Pascagoula home was destroyed by the 2005 storm. Zach Scruggs is the son and law partner of disgraced former attorney Richard ”Dickie” Scruggs, Lott’s brother-in-law.

”I invoke my Fifth Amendment rights in response to that question,” Zach Scruggs responded.

  87. Presidents often turn out differently than we expect them to (just as Supreme Court Justices do). Who would have expected Truman to drop the first atomic weapons on human beings? Who would have expected Nixon the “Red Baiter” demagogue who pulled the spectacular hatchet job on Helen Gahagan Douglas in 1950 to kiss up to Mao and Red China?

Neither Obama nor McCain would turn out as we expect them to.

As far as electing a black person or a woman as President, the chances for each are much greater if they were a conservative religious right Republican, alleviating the panic people feel about taking a risk.

Obama’s best bet to get elected would be to choose a conservative, white Democrat as his Vice Presidential candidate, and promise to let him run things for the first two years of the new administration while Obama followed his VO around on a bicycle with training wheels. Perhaps retired Marine General, Anthony Zinni.

    http://tiny.cc/Zinni

For that matter, McCain’s best bet would be to pick Condi Rice as his running mate and promise to take tranquilizers and naps while she runs the things for the last two years of his term.

    http://tiny.cc/Coni

Bob Barr, of course, is the Ralph Nader of the right.

  89. The term Antichrist when used in the NT used anti in its earlier sense as “standing in the place of” as in “type” and “antitype”, rather than “standing in opposition to” as the modern reader is likely to picture it. The modern meaning read back into NT texts distorts the warnings and gives rise to the not quite biblical picture of some man near equal to Christ in supernatural power but allied with demonic forces.

As someone who seems to invoke a Messianic image of the One who will lead us into becoming whomever we are waiting for and into our time that has now come, Obama certainly seems to fit the original sense of the word. That he might be some demonicaly empowered world ruler-in-waiting in the modern sense popularized by the Left Behind series strains credulity, common decency and sound hermeneutics.

  98. That’s it, Monsieur Lumps and everyone else, fight, fight, fight! Call everyone names (like “McBushie”)
and don’t forget to commit every genetic fallacy in the book. I mean, seriously! Everyone can discuss and debate things with each other without being condescending and attacking those being addressed.
Which is one reason I try not to say anything that is vitriolic or a pointed attack against others, rather than their beliefs. However, sometimes the truth needs to be said, and if it’s something like “abortion is murder,” I will say it (albeit in a non-threatening manner) whether it offends people or not. In that case, “by all means, be offended!” Then perhaps those who are “offended” will reconsider their positions or realize how ridiculous many people are when they try to be politically correct.

  99. Chas:

    My car is tuned.
    My filter is clean.
    My tires are properly inflated.
    I use the correct oil.

    Gasoline still cost $3.789/gal yesterday.

True, but you’re buying less of it.

The national average gas price is $3.88. “Efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%.” (Time Magazine). So let’s say proper engine and tire maintenance, like Obama suggested (not as his entire energy plan, but as what people can do right now to help), improves your mileage 7%.

The fuel economy national average is 17.1 MPG (Wikipedia). A 7% increase over that would be 18.3 MPG.

The average American drives 12000 miles per year. (wiki.answers).

    So, 12,000 miles per year…
    @ 17.1 MPG = 701.8 gallons @ $3.88 = $2723
    @ 18.3 MPG = 655.7 gallons @ $3.88 = $2544

That’s a savings of $179 each year. Put another way, in order for your yearly gas costs to be $2544 on a car that did not follow Obama’s and the efficiency experts’ suggestions, gas would need to fall 25.5 cents per gallon to $3.625:

    @ 17.1 MPG = 701.8 gallons @ $3.625 = $2544

In comparison, how would Bush’s proposed drilling plan affect gas prices?

The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now.
    (Time again)

Overall proper engine and tire maintenance seems a good reminder to me. Not the entirety of an energy plan, but of course Obama didn’t suggest it as that, either.

  100. Hey, if you really want to get good fuel mileage, buy one of those turbo diesels from Europe that the big car manufacturers can’t sell here. Those folks are regularly getting 30-40 MPG.

“Hey, if you really want to get good fuel mileage, buy one of those turbo diesels from Europe that the big car manufacturers can’t sell here. Those folks are regularly getting 30-40 MPG.”

But you would offset the better mileage by paying 20% more per gallon of fuel (AAA lists diesel at $4.64/gallon and regular at $3.87 today). Your idea is good from a climate change view, but not entirely from an economic point if the goal is paying less. A Mini Cooper or Toyota Corolla gets 37 on the highway. Honda Accord 31.

  110. 110. Gravatar by mmacmurray 08.06.08 at 10:34 am

Our 10-year-old VW Jetta TDI with 265,000 miles on it still gets more than 40 mpg. So even though diesel costs more per gallon right now, the Jetta is still less expensive to run than our other car, which only gets about 23 mpg.

Our trouble is that we can’t fit all 3 kids into the back seat of the Jetta. We would LOVE to have a wagon that runs on diesel - available in the UK and Europe - that gets 30-40 mpg and could fit 3 car seats in the back. Maybe when/if gas prices here rise to the level they have been in Europe for years that diesel technology could be available here.
