Rants! & Raves! 3.7
Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:
1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.
2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.
3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.
Have fun! ![]()

Rant: I traveled from Louisville, KY to central Arkansas on Monday (to attend a presbytery meeting). I had hoped the weather would be nice, but nearly a foot of snow (I’m not exaggerating) was dumped on the area overnight. Needless to say, that complicated things a bit travel-wise and meeting-wise.
Rant: Now it’s snowing in Louisville. It’s getting worse, and it looks like we already have a few inches of accumulation.
Rant: My wife has to drive to work in all of this. She works for Huntington Learning Center, and they don’t cancel for anything, even though most of her students will cancel once she drives there. It makes no sense for her to put herself at risk just because HLC wants to make a few bucks.
Rave: The snow sure is pretty!
Rave: I spent yesterday at a local dog show, mostly mingling with the collies and collie owners. There were 21 collies shown, and about as many shelties, plus multiple other breeds. It was fun to pet dogs and talk about dogs, and ask a few grooming questions. And, though I don’t have a show collie, not one of those collies has the full, gorgeous tail she does, and few have such gorgeous markings. I’ll take a beautiful tail over “perfect teeth placement” any day.
Rant: It’s gray out. I’m eager for spring. We have signs of it (daffodils coming up, my backyard needing mowed), but it’s slow in coming, and I’m very ready for it. (Last year a late freeze killed everything, so we never really had spring. So now I’m doubly ready, because it feels a bit late and because we never got it last year.)
Rant:
It’s not snowing here! It’s pollenationing here instead. I’d give you a few twenties to trade places with you.
MiM, I’ll take you up on that offer. This time last year I was in your neck of the woods, I believe (Cumming, GA). Sure would be nice to be back there right now (though not as pretty!).
Rave! My husband has been at his new job for three weeks, and he is already being offered a promotion!
Rant! The phone in my office doesn’t let you know it’s dead and needs to be charged until the first time it rings after it has died, at which point it won’t allow you to answer the incoming call…even though it will ring. Grrr.
Rave: My children are enjoying the March snow in northeastern Texas. It is beautiful. I wonder if global warming caused it!?
Rant: John McCain clinched the Republican nomination. Only Giuliani was lower on my list. All the best canddiates are out of the race.
Rave: Went with the Missus to see “Juno” last night (had a free ticket, another Rave!). It was no “No Country for Old Men”, but it was pretty good and enjoyable.
Rave: The snow TJ was ranting about is rain here. We’ll take all we can get.
Kyle: All the best candidates are out of the race.
That’s actually quite a striking statement. What does it say about us as Americans? Does it not confirm the saying that we “get what we deserve”?
“The snow TJ was ranting about is rain here. We’ll take all we can get.”
True, Dat. Seconded. (In spite of the pollen misery.)
Rave: My son heard me having trouble with my computer and told me how to fix it. He said, “This is how Daddy does it. First you say, Dang it! Then you walk this way, then you walk that way, then you sit down and watch TV for a while and that will fix it.”
Rant: It didn’t work.
Rant II: I accidentally dyed my hair black and now I look like a middle aged Goth girl.
How does one accidentally dye one’s hair black??
Rave: I finished up the last week of school before Spring break!
Rant: I didn’t exactly make a glorious exit.
Galadriel,
I would guess she was going for green (Anne of Green Gables) but the peddlar was wrong and it turned black and “carrots” was so much better.
Cheryl D.: I am glad to know you, too, are a collie person. It just occured to me that your symbol or whatever you call that thing in front of your comments is actually relevant to your collie appreciation. I had not really thought about it until I read your comment on this thread; I guess I just thought maybe you had fallen in a well when you were a kid (like lil’ Timmy) and had been heroically rescued by a collie, or something like that.
We have always had collies in our families (continuous), for all of my life and generations before that, actually. I can count at least 12 collies who have been part of our lives since I can remember. They are absolutely wonderful dogs, although we have Great Pyrennese as well and Shelties as well.
Our collie, Star, now is 13 years old and he is fading rapidly (hind legs going so that he is barely able to get up anymore and he has some sort of cancer) so I am getting ready for heart-break pretty soon.
He is almost a skeleton and wobbles but he still lords it over all the other dogs (including Great Pyrennese weighing 130 and 140 pounds who eat coyotes like potato chips); they know he is the Top Dog of the Place and accord him the greatest respect.
Raves: It’s Spring Break! My birthday is tomorrow!
Rants: School starts back up in one week. Tomorrow I will be one year older.
Rave: It’s a really nice day here in MN
Rant: It’s snowing in Texas, Arkansas, and Kentucky, but NOT Minnesota? What’s with that? Doesn’t the snow know where it belongs?
JBH, when I was in college back in 1989 (wow, that’s dating myself), I was helping usher a playoff football game (yes, college football does have playoffs, but at Division 1-AA and II and III levels) for Georgia Southern, in Statesboro, GA (that’s south GA). It was a semi-final game with the other one being held in Texas. GSU was hosting the University of Montana. The weather in GA was absolutely miserable (in Texas also) with sub-freezing temperatures and a sleet storm at halftime. Montana? Oh, it was sunny and in the 50’s or 60’s that day. Go figure.
Re: #17
It is a really nice day here in MN, although it could be a bit warmer for my taste. I’m tired of the cold. And we have enough snow, thank you, at least where I am. We’ve got drifts that have buried our LP tank, and this is the first winter that I can remember being able to stand above my bird feeders to fill them.
#13. Galadriel, My mother’s been after me to get rid of my gray, so she gave me a box of hair color. It was a darker color than I usually use, plus my hair always tends to come out darker than the color on the box, but I thought, “What the heck, if I don’t like it, it will wash out in a few weeks.” But guess what? It wasn’t the wash out kind. I was ten minutes into it before I thought to read the box. I washed it out as soon I realized my mistake, but now all I need is a nose ring, some black lipstick and a big crucifix.
There is 16% chance of snow here. The shelves are clear of milk and bread.
Kbells
RAVE - you can always buy a wig
RAVE - stock up on lemonade
RAVE - check out the crackers
oooh, I’m sorry Kbells. ^_^ I always wanted black hair.
Cheryl D, #2 - your back yard needs mowing?! I can hardly see mine for all the snow on it! My bulb garden is covered with about 18 inches of snow and a pile of scrap lumber from the construction we’re having done. I’m guessing we won’t even see crocuses up here for another month, at least.
Drill, that picture (”gravatar”) is of my girl, Miss Tennessee. She has pink bows in her fur from last fall’s foster kids, but ya can’t really see ‘em with the picture that small. I’d have a second collie, but my house and yard are barely big enough for one. I’ve loved them since my days at summer camp as a kid, where a resident collie always got a lot of my attention. I didn’t discover Lassie (and Lad) until after knowing the real thing. I had to wait nearly 30 years before I finally owned my own house and could have my very own collie. But she’s great.
Rant: I think I’ll have to wait for spring. We’re supposed to get three to five inches of snow tonight, with a low in the 20s and a high tomorrow of around freezing. (And local kids must be wishing they could get school cancelled, but it’ll be Saturday and they would have been out anyway!) Right now it’s sleeting or something like that–looks a bit like snow, but you can hear it falling, so there must be some sleet or freezing rain in the mix. The biggest concern is that my sister is getting stuff at least as bad, due to give birth any day, and an hour from her birthing center. She asked me to pray that the baby would wait till at least Sunday, when this mess is supposed to be over.
Yep, my backyard needs mowing, and by morning my driveway will need shoveling. And I still have a few leaves alongside my driveway from the neighbor’s oak tree that always waits till mid-winter to dump. All I need is a sign of summer, and I could really confuse people.
#22. I always wanted red hair, but when I tried that it came out kind of purple. (see my bio)
#21. I already had milk and bread which means it will not snow.
Rave: The two older L children came home for the night.
Rant: They came to get help with their taxes.
Rant 2: We seem to be in a no snow zone. Huge amounts pile up North and South of us, but we get next to nothing.
Rant: It was still below zero this morning here. That is unacceptable for March. It must warm up. It must warm up.
Rave: I was able to leave for a few weeks and get relief from the cold. Also, it is beautiful outside.
Cheryl: I pray your sister will be able to get to the birthing center in time. My grandson was born during a snowstorm a year ago and all worked out fine. They were able to get to the hospital and we even managed to get there with the big brother for a visit.
KBells: I had to read your son’s description of how his dad fixes the computer outloud to my husband. That was very cute!
I ranted a couple of weeks ago that I had just sent in my income tax when, same day, in the mail I received another 1099DIV & 1099INT. Which means I have an amended return to do.
So: Get to it Chas!
A day late, but:
RANT: How is it that we can spend 100 million dollars on the space station and not have the foresight to retool our space flight program so we can dock on the thing without relying on the Russians! We will have a five year gap of our own space capable craft when the station comes online.
RAVE: Tech savvy and giving partner who fixed up everything I need on my laptop before I have to take off for a couple of weeks.
We are going to try to find a non-breakable toy for him to twirl and chew on (the frames also show where he has chewed on them a great deal).
