Morning all!

Today’s quote is from an animated movie: “Ain’t no need to watch where I’m goin’; just need to know where I’ve been.”

    Cars?

  2. Today, I felt moved to write the Texas governor.
I was away for a few days and probably missed the thread, but the raid on the polygamist compound seems to violate many rights.

These raids were done on the basis of one, unsubstantiated phone call. Where I have no problem believing the veracity of that girl’s complaints — sexual abusers can be found everywhere– It strikes me as terribly, terribly, wrong to remove 400+ children from there homes based on that call. Why not just go after the accused?

If it could happen to them, it could happen to us.
I wrote the governor a polite letter of concern, imploring that this violation of rights, this horror, cease.

    EYG,
You might want to check your info. Some have indicated that the state had another informant and had been building a case for some time. There was a thread, but I don’t see it listed at the left.

The Thread is on the front page and is called “Polygamy and the State”.

  5. I will keep looking, Ajisun, but the 5 or so articles I read didn’t indicate that at all.

    Thanks, kbells.

  6. Where is the due process? Confiscating children is very serious.
I’m neither a polygamist or a Mormon, but, wouldn’t it make more sense to go after the accused?

“We were contacted and told our homes had been raided, our children taken away with no explanation, and because of law enforcement blockade preventing entering or leaving the ranch, we were unable to get to our homes and had no-where to go,” it said. “As of Wednesday, April 9, 2008, we have been permitted to return to our empty, ransacked homes, heartsick and lonely.”

The mothers said they want Perry to examine the conditions in which the removed children have been placed.

“You would be appalled,” the letter said. “Many of our children have become sick as a result of the conditions they have been placed in. Some have even had to be taken to the hospital. Our innocent children are continually being questioned on things they know nothing about. The physical examinations were horrifying to the children. The exposure to these conditions is traumatizing them.”

Now, imagine a christian saying that, because if the government can do that to these folks, why wouldn’t they do it to Christians?

  7. I’m torn about that polygamy story, and I admit I haven’t had the time to look into it all that deeply. It’s scary, because the government doesn’t have the right to take children away at any whim - or they shouldn’t, anyway. On the other hand, polygamy is against the law. It is also against the law to marry a 13 year old girl. So, where these issues are concerned, the children need to be protected. I’ll have to follow the story and see where it goes…

  8. I would guess that at least part of the reason for separating the children from their parents is to try to get the children’s perspective on how they had been treated without their parents being able to tell them what they’re supposed to say when they’re questioned.

  9. The quote is Mater from Cars. Loved that movie, even if it is a bit cheesy at times.

    KBells: Enjoy your virtual cappuccino!

  11. FYI Kristin- You may want to remember that not all of us like the digital cappuccinos. I am surprised Joe B has not mentioned that when he won. (BTW- I prefer double shot mochas.)

    Peter L:
I have a hard time remembering who likes what, so perhaps when guessing the answer to the day’s quote, you all should put in your order. Then if you are the winner, I will know just what to award. :)

  13. Peter L. likes cookies!
(They’re even better when no one is watching….)
    ;-)

    I’ll take a hot chocolate.

  15. Re # 11 and others - Sheesh you guys - it’s not like you’re actually drinking it. LOL :-D

  16. Last week, 3 college students were killed in a house fire near the campus of UW-Stout (Wisconsin) - my alma mater, and that of my husband. Apparently, they died of smoke inhalation, since flames were confined to areas away from where they each died. What a tragedy for the families, friends and the campus.
I read yesterday that the Phelps group from Kansas was on campus last week protesting, and saying that those students were “killed because of the sins of Minnesota and Wisconsin” - the students were from both states. Thankfully, Stout students out-shouted them and they left. What is wrong with these people?? Where do they find this teaching in the Bible? Sure, everyone ultimately dies because of sin, but come on! Amazing how twisted the Word can get by human beings. It’s sick and wrong.

Thanks to all who prayed for me about leading a retreat this weekend. I came home feeling completely wrung out, but had a good experience.

Of course, I began my talk by reminding the women I was only there to share some ideas. The true ministry would come from what God put His finger on in their lives and how they responded to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. I also explained they might very well receive far more from the other women attending than from anything I said.

It was humbling to hear them respond to the stories and thoughts I shared, but so gratifying, later, to see them ministering to one another. I love the body of Christ when it’s aligned with God’s word. :-)

    TL,

The Phelps people, if you can call them people, have become religious terrorists. All terrorists have no self control, no shame and can never be satisfied.

  19. EYG, I commented on that other thread, because I’d heard this story a couple years ago, when a book came out about it. This wasn’t a raid on a “family” at all. I hate that it might set precedent for bad things in the future, but something needed to be done here, now.

Michelle, I’m so glad it went well!

Speaking of removing children from their homes, our new ones arrive in a couple hours, a change from the Wednesday plan.

    Michelle,

Thank you for the very encouraging report on your weekend.

  21. Praying for you all, Mumsee.

    Thanks KI,

As we enter into this new phase of life, there are times when we think we might well be crazy. It is tremendously encouraging to know that there are saints all over the planet praying for us. It gives a nod of encouragement that others think we just might be doing the right thing.

  23. Mumsee,

But it’s probably good to be a little bit crazy going into this. At any rate, love and prayers go with you and them.

KBells: Then a hot chocolate it is! :)
