Rants! & Raves! 8.1

Gravatar  47 Comments

Here it is, Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off about the week past. Remember the rules:

 1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.

2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.

3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.

Have fun!

:-)

Rant: The insane left left Washington without allowing a vote to drill, drill drill for oil and the nitwit Bush said he was not going to call them back from month long vacation and force them to do so. I believe that all of our politicians hate Americans and could care less about our security and financial welfare.

Get a hold of your elected nitwit and give them two barrels worth of anger. They have no shame. Their actions are unconscionable

Rave: it is Friday and I do get to go home .

  2. :) We got a good price on a used car for our soon-to-be-licensed 16-yr-old son, a 1989 Honda Accord that had been owned by a mechanic and well cared for despite its age and miles. It’s not the pickup my husband was originally thinking of, and not even a stick shift (to my surprise), but they’re both happy with it. My husband plans to use it as well sometimes, as it gets better gas mileage than his car.

:( As soon as our son gets his license, our insurance premiums will more than double. We’re still waiting to hear back from the store where he interviewed for a job last week - he needs to work in order to help pay for that.

  3. Rant: The ferry dock broke. I didn’t realize it until I got to the ferry (misunderstanding the news broadcast). I then had to turn around and go back to the city.

Further rant: I thought I could go crash at my daughter’s house. My daughter and her partner and Random Granddaughter are visiting other grandparents, so the house is empty, and I have a key. When I called my wife to tell her of my change in plans, my wife said, “They have friends who are house-sitting. If you use your key late at night, you will scare the guests half to death.” I suppose just for fun I could do so, but I didn’t. So I went and stayed at a (very, very cheap) motel.

Rave: When I took the ferry the next day:

    a) The dock is fixed and the ferry connection is working again.

    b) After I whined at my favorite ticket taker (her customer service skills are indeed excellent), she gave me two free tickets. The two free tickets partly compensated for the cost of staying at the very cheap motel.

:-( My baby starts school in two weeks.

:-) July is over and hubbie’s work schedule should improve.

:-( July is over - where has the summer gone?!

  6. :-(
    Rant:
Security Software tech support that doesn’t comprehend the written word. I spent the better part of this week trying to get a software company to correct a mistake they made because they didn’t read what I wrote. I asked them to exchange a 1 user license for Win NT for another 1 user license for Win XP. So what did they do? They left the Win NT license intact, and invalidated my 5 user Win XP license, and then issued another 1 user Win NT license. When I asked them to correct that, they re-validated my 5 user Win XP license, and then finally issued another 1 user Win XP license - which proved to be invalid. (And the whole time they were insisting that I asked to exchange the Win XP license for a Win NT license - which was clearly not true if you actually read my first email to them.) When I asked them to correct the invalid 1 user Win XP license and get rid of the 2 Win NT licenses they responded by saying that the Win NT licenses had been removed from my account and that the 1 user Win XP license was not expired and what was my problem? As I check my account this morning, I see all is as it should be despite their “non-admission” that the 1 user license was invalid yesterday…

    I’m just glad that’s over.

    :-)
    Rave:
Now I can concentrate on other problems.

    :-)
    Rave:
I’m just glad I don’t have to deal with all the problems our employer left behind since he’s on vacation. Everyone else is dealing with that!

  7. Congrats on finding a car, Pauline.

  8. 8. Gravatar by NJLawyer 08.01.08 at 9:21 am

Oh, KBells, I wish I could give you a hug. This is just the beginning. He might fall in love with his teacher, too.

  9. Pauline,
I can empathize with you on the cost of car insurance. Although I have to say, it’s quite a relief to have both boys off our insurance and paying for their own. It sure did drive the cost of our insurance for many years though.

Make it Man: You probably thought you were working with someone in America who understood English, and had some idea of what you were talking about.

  11. Rant :( :
The current state of affairs in the world, our country, our government, etc. Especially retarded laws…

    Rave :) :
While it’s not perfect, our country is still the best country in the world to live in right now,
and regardless of what the Europeans and the rest of the world think of us, we still have some things that give credit to our country.
    For instance, we have the most freedoms;
the most powerful and advanced military; the best fighter jet (F-22 Raptor), and some of the most talented people in the world, like the girl who played a variety of instruments and whose applications were(recently) accepted at nearly every Ivy League school (perhaps because like Hilary Hahn, she was home schooled and thus had more time to develop her talents).
We also have some of the richest people in the world (men like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and others, most of who made their fortune by inventing or creating something new), and last but not least, a small Washington-based company makes the SSC Ultimate Aero, the world’s fastest production car. www.shelbysupercars.com
1,183 hp and an estimated top speed of more than 270 mph. (they didn’t reach that speed because they ran out of road) Try telling that to the Italian exotic car makers. We make the fastest car!

Rave :-) Interesting museums like the Steamboat Arabia in KC. Check it out if you’re ever in the area! The Science Place at Union Station is also an excellent hands-on museum. What a great country. So many interesting places to visit! :-D

Rave: Beat Joe B. to the quote on WV this morning–a rare moment.

Rave: Answered Random’s, “Why do you post?” Q so he’s now ticked at me, but some of the rest of y’all better watch out.

Rave: Hubby has all of August off and we are camping this weekend at a So Cal blue lagoon. Then heading out across the states to end up in Great Lakes, Illinois to see #1 son graduate from Naval basic training. Then finish the month off at a Christian camp in Big Bear, CA.

Rant: Now about those deadlines . . .

  14. :) Issue #55 of Reaching Out Magazine is now online.

:) We can avoid drilling for more oil by tuning our (cars’) engines and maintaining our (cars’) tires properly inflated.

:( Come to think of it, we can avoid drilling for more oil by not doing it.

:) I didn’t have to wait in line for three hours to buy 7 litres of petrol.

    :) The Lord is risen!

  15. 15. Gravatar by mmacmurray 08.01.08 at 11:11 am

:-) Hubbie got free tickets to see the Portland Sea Dogs (the Red Sox Double-A affiliate) tonight. He’s on call and will have to keep his pager on, but the ballpark is close enough to the hospital so we can go to the game. The boys are pretty excited.

  16. 16. Gravatar by kBells 08.01.08 at 11:46 am

Thanks NJL. Better he fall in love with the teacher now than when he’s 14.

BTW, hubbies going to be in Jersey this weekend. I told him that if he met any lawyers to tell them kBells says “Hey.”

  17. 17. Gravatar by kBells 08.01.08 at 11:54 am

New rant: neighbor asked if their kid could stay at our house for a few minutes while she went out. My husband, knowing I had to take him to the airport in 45 minute, said yes. Mom wasn’t back in 45 minutes. I had to take the child with me to the airport which meant I had to come straight home instead of running those errands close to the airport as I had planned. I’m back, but neighbor is not. Not happy with hubbie or the neighbor

  18. 18. Gravatar by NJLawyer 08.01.08 at 11:57 am

    KBells, I hadn’t thought of that! :)

Where’s the hubby going to be? (And after you last post, am I putting him up until he’s off your list? I can’t believe that woman did that to you!)

  19. Rave: I am now a Registered Interior Designer in the State of Wisconsin!

Rave: I am now a Certified Professional Dealer of Hunter Douglas window treatments - one of only 10 or so in the country!

Rant: Business is too slow to take full advantage of the above credentials.

Rant: The powers-that-be at my company don’t seem horribly interested in changing status-quo to allow for new business.

Rave: A lovely, albeit HOT, weekend coming up!

  20. Rant: Is it Friday already?

    Rant: Is it August already?

Rave: I got the book I’m waiting for, so now August will be “full employment,” like May, June, and July. (The year started very slowly, and July and August are usually slow months.)

Rave: good times with friends this week

Rave: enough “down time” this week to defend the faith some on the “Falsifiablity of God” thread AND with a neighbor lady who usually changes the subject the moment I say “Jesus” (she tried to yesterday, but since she had asked the question I was answering, I made her hear me out–politely, but I reminded her she had asked the question and I was answering it)

  21. 21. Gravatar by grandma 08.01.08 at 12:33 pm

:) Eight of us are going on the Hiawatha Bike Trail Ride tomorrow. (Montana/Idaho border) It is an abandoned railroad with tunnels. One of the tunnels is 1.4 miles. Dark, dark, dark! It is a 15 mile ride. The weather is going to be great.

:) Family visiting this week. Lots of activity and good food.

    :) Nothing to rant about.

  22. 22. Gravatar by kBells 08.01.08 at 12:34 pm

NJL, You may have to. I’m more mad at him than the neighbor. He made the deal through the kid, trusting a six-year old to make it clear we had to be somewhere in 45 minutes. For all I know he told his mother he could stay all day. Now to make natters worse he had fallen off his bike and skinned his knee and hubbie forgot his cell phone so I can’t even call him and chew him out. If you do see him tell him to “call his wife. He is in big trouble”. I think he is shooting a race in Monmouth Park.

  23. 23. Gravatar by paula 08.01.08 at 2:17 pm

KBells- Love on that kiddo. And forgive your hubby. He’s a man. i.e. Ability to focus on one thing: Getting to the airport. No room for details about neighbor’s kid, etc. You don’t need to carry that mental garbage all day. Errands can wait, usually. Relationships shouldn’t.

    Mayhem Alert ! Mayhem alert!
Mr Bells, if you’re lurking this site, to NOT call any lawyers in NJ, do NOT go home without flowers. Your life depends on it. Well, at least, your happy home.

  25. 25. Gravatar by Chas 08.01.08 at 2:26 pm

    :-)
Gas is $3.799 at the Shell station. It was $4.099.
    President Bush, repeat after me:
“ANWR, ANWR” Gas will come down another twenty cents.

  26. 26. Gravatar by NJLawyer 08.01.08 at 2:56 pm

So, Chas, how do you know I wouldn’t have told Mr. Bells to take flowers — not to mention Jersey tomatoes — back home with him?! :)

I think it worked out well for him that he forgot his cell phone. Actually, I was thinking of going to Monmouth Park with a friend as a birthday present. I love the races. I have no doubt that KBells will calm down, she’ll begin to miss him, and she’ll be happy to hand the little guy over to dad when he returns. This can all work out as long as KBells remembers what my one friend’s Jewish mother told us when we were in college: “All men are alike. If men were smart, they’d be women.” I added a third prong to the test: “if you don’t expect much, you won’t be disappointed if you don’t get it.” :)

:) Finally, I have a rave: NJ sent me my property tax rebate of $80. Groceries for the week!

:( Still have last week’s rant: The Feds haven’t emailed me regarding the job I want.

  27. 27. Gravatar by Anlir 08.01.08 at 3:06 pm

:-( Rant! The “swiftboating” of Barack Obama started this week. It looks like our Republican friends have decided that “down and dirty” is the only way they can win in November.

:-) Rave! A new 32″ flat screen LCD TV. I’ve done my part to help the economy by spending my tax rebate. Family Guy never looked so good! [Consumer note: If you find a price cheaper than Wal-Mart and you take them the ad, they’ll match it. Their extended warranty is the cheaper than anyone else’s.]

:-) Rave! One month from today (Labor Day night) the Tennessee Vols open at UCLA. Let’s see…Bush speaking at the Republican Convention vs the Tennessee Vols on national TV - which will it be? No contest!

  28. 28. Gravatar by NJLawyer 08.01.08 at 3:27 pm

Anlir, how thick is it. The store down the street from me is advertising a new LCD tv that is only 1/2 inch thick. Are you hanging yours on the wall?

  29. 29. Gravatar by Anlir 08.01.08 at 4:27 pm

    NJLaywer,

1/2″? Are you sure? The thinnest I’ve found is about 3 1/8″ in a 26″ or higher flat panel. It would have to be outrageously expensive if it’s that thin.

Over the last few weeks I’ve become quite familiar with LCD and Plasma TV’s, learning the lingo, the specs, the manufacturers, the ratings, and the prices. I visited every major electronics chain and discount store multiple time and spent many hours online looking. I more than did my homework because for me it was a major purchase that wasn’t done lightly.

In the end, I settled on a 32″ Sharp LCD TV, which was on sale at Circuit City for $617.50. However, their extended warranty is higher than other stores and Circuit City may not be in business much longer. So I printed off the ad online and took it to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart’s price is $647.00, but they gave it to me for the Circuit City price and their warranty was only $60.00 (vs $100 @ Circuit City).

If you want a Plasma TV, Wal-Mart has the best deal: $529.00 for a 32″ Visio. The picture is awesome, but the warranty is more expensive ($120.00). Plus you have to “wipe” the screen regularly to prevent image burn. For the picture quality and the specs, it’s the best deal.

  30. 30. Gravatar by kBells 08.01.08 at 4:35 pm

Everything’s fine. Neighbors are reunited and errands are done. I guess it was a good thing he forgot his phone. Now he’ll never know he was in trouble, The tomatoes sound great except I’m still dealing with all the peaches we brought back from Georgia.

  31. 31. Gravatar by Anlir 08.01.08 at 4:35 pm

Oh, and I am not wall mounting the TV for now, though I can later. It cost an additional $100 for the wall mounting hardware. That would make a nice Christmas or birthday present (are you reading this mom?).

    #1 Llama

“The insane left left Washington without allowing a vote to drill, drill drill for oil…”

Llama, don’t be discouraged! God is good. (No, I am not claiming the next paragraph of the post is God choosing Republicans over Democrats. {Ecclesiastes 10:2 NIV})

I wasn’t sure that the Democrats could lose but with this set of shenanigans, it looks like it is the Republicans’ opening. Now, we might win. The sure thing isn’t so sure.

    Rant: People are being jerks
    Rant: I’m tired
Rant: won’t be able to turn in my reading ticket becasue I can’t read fast enough
Rave: I’ve already turned in 5 tickets and have another 2 to turn in tomorrow
Rant: An authour won’t write fast enough and new book isn’t due till September
    Rant: I’m warm
Rave: We turned on the AC
    Rave: my b-day is soon

  34. Anlir:

The “swiftboating” only started this week? You’ve been talking about it for weeks.

So what did they find? I assume it’s comparable to the ugly truth about Kerry, or you wouldn’t be using the disappointing term “swiftboating.” Does that make you wish you had someone else to vote for, or will you vote for him anyway? I’m so sorry; that must be rough. Well, maybe liberals will listen and not vote for him. You know they ignored the stuff said about Kerry….

  35. 35. Gravatar by NJLawyer 08.01.08 at 7:05 pm

Yes, I am sure, Anlir! I saw the ad in the store window and couldn’t figure it out, so I asked the guy in the store. They are a high-end outfit that caters to the rich in my town, installing stereo systems and media rooms, etc. The tv is a 1/2 thick! Needless to say, not in my price range. I’m a Circuit City/Wal-Mart/BestBuy person just like you! I will keep your advice in mind. I am hoping to get FIOS soon, and I have a wall that would be perfect from virtually every vantage point. But these indugences must wait!

    Enjoy yours!

KBells, there is a recipe in the new Veranda magazine for peaches and tomatoes together in some sort of “pie.” If you like both, it’s worth a looksee.

  36. 36. Gravatar by Chas 08.01.08 at 7:18 pm

    Pauline, #2
Having a teenage son who can drive isn’t all bad. You can send him on errands. Give him some responsibility.
The big downside is not insurance cost, but that you don’t know where he is. Our son was out on the town before cell phones. We put “be at home by …” restrictions.
This winter, your husband should take him to an empty shopping center just after a snow and teach him to drive in the snow.
Let him drive some on trips.
    Good Luck!

  37. Speaking of cars,

Rave: I got a car! Somewhat unexpectedly, too - my older sister bought a new car and I got to buy hers.

Rant: The car is almost as old as I am.

Rave: I get to impersonate Bilbo Baggins whenever I say above line!

  38. 38. Gravatar by kBells 08.01.08 at 9:52 pm

NJL, somewhere my husband has his grandmother’s recipe for tomato cobbler. I’m not looking for it. I will never believe tomatoes are a fruit.

  39. Rave: Being close enough to a lot of places that I can walk, getting my exercise and saving on gas at the same time! (I did have to wait till the day started turning cooler since we got well into the 90s today, close to 100 by my thermometer.)

Rave: getting my favorite chocolate on sale (and since I walked about three miles in the afternoon heat, I earned the right to eat some, right?)–don’t ask me how many bags I bought, please. (OK, OK, I bought four and I already had 1 1/2–but that will last me several months.)

Rave: finally getting some good deer pictures (my camera disappointed me greatly on one roll–beautifully framed pictures of deer that came out unusably dark–and yes, I looked at the negatives themselves in case it was just the developing that was to blame)

KBells, that reminds me of a B.C. cartoon. One man asks another, “Are tomatoes a fruit or a vegetable?” The other man asks why he wants to know. “I’m making a fruitcake.” “They’re a vegetable.”

:-( Although I hope the ex-employees can find new jobs.

Rave: I finally reached my wedding weight goal; my hubbie let me pick out an ipod (something I’ve been wanting for a looooong time). While it took me two days to figure out how to program it, I love being able to listen to MY music whenever I want…I know, how selfish!

Rave: I’ve lost 2 more since then.

Rave: I can now run more than 14 miles at a time again!

Rave: Going to the beach in one week!

    Is this too girly, guys????

    Have a blessed weekend!

  44. Wow, 14 miles. You must be really fit (and like to exercise?), MOMOFFOUR. I haven’t done more than a 10k at one time.

  45. 45. Gravatar by momoffour 08.02.08 at 9:03 am

Yes, Rio, I do like to exercise, and I’ve been a runner since I followed in my big brothers footsteps when I was five years old. I’m trying to figure out if I can train for a marathon without stepping away from my home duties at all. Right now that involved getting up reeeeaaaallly early. But I have enjoyed quite a few sunrises at the end of my runs!
